John 14:2
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Now I realize in other translations they translate it as "many rooms" or "many abodes" but typically when people think of heaven the "many mansions" illustration gets used, and it is even used as "something to look forward to" in heaven/new earth. But to me, it has never really mattered, desiring material wealth was something I grew out of a long time ago. But I've been thinking about it, and I realize, I don't even know if there's really a point to a "mansion" in heaven. We won't need sleep, so who needs a bedroom, as far as we know we're going to be eating fruit off the tree of life, so won't really need a kitchen... everyone's going to be single and not have any children, so you wouldn't need any extra rooms for extra people.. just a bunch of bachelor pads... if you'd even need one of those for any purpose as you wouldn't need shelter from the elements.. so what would be the point? Even in Isaiah there's imagery of people building houses... for what?

It is an allusion to the Jewish wedding...the groom goes and prepares a place in his father's house and then when the father says it is ready, the groom goes and brings the bride.

Imo these 'mansions' are merely a metaphor for the new 'vessels' that ones spirit will inhabit in the next world. If these limited fleshly bodies of ours are considered 'temples', as well as the many parables that describe our earthly bodies as 'houses', then I would consider that the glorious immortal spiritual bodies one inherits in the world to come be considered 'mansions'. Again, this is my opinion ofc.

There are many things that the human mind cannot comprehend concerning the future with God.

Considering that John tells us in Rev. 21:16 that the "New Jerusalem" is four square measuring 12,000 furlongs, with the length, breadth, and the height being equal.

That translates to 1,500 miles wide and 1,500 miles high.

I would say yes, the mansions are literal.

Life will go on forever, with children being born to those who will have natural bodies (those saved after the first resurrection.) Just the way God intended for Adam and Eve, until sin entered the world.

But at this time there is no more sin in the world, at all. It will be the Perfect Age that will continue forever.

Revelation 21
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

The New Jerusalem, the Bride of the Lamb

9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits thick. 18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

hope this helps !!!

That actually sounds quite small considering there will be so many of us there

What makes you think there will be "so many of us there?"

Narrow is the way to life and few there be that find it.

Because there will be 144 000 Israelites plus all who have been born again there. Revelation speaks of a vast multitude worshippers round the throne of God.

Salvation is for all who have called upon the Lord and trusted in the sacrifice of Jesus. Few means few compared to the world as a whole.

We are few in number compared to the world...not many in the world would say they are christians.

I have heard some preachers say though that the holy city is for the Christians who have gained rewards and the other Christians are outside the city but in the rest of heaven.

Perhaps that is what Jesus meant. That many get to heaven but only a few Christians really l ive holy lives...

I could be wrong but this makes sense to me...I am definitely of the Elect but a! Not a very good christian. I fall into sin easily and am easily distracted

I am neurodiverse from a bad upbringing so have a lot to work through before I can function as a decent human let alone a good christian but I do know the Holy Spirit lives in me and is changing me bit by bit...I know I am accep ted by God because I trust only the blood of Jesus to make me righteous... I do the odd good work as the spirit leads me but nothing that could save me

Forget the "preachers" where Jesus is so will believers dwell with Him. Read Revelation 21 above. Jesus promise is that we will be with Him. He prepared the place for us as per John 14. Revelation 21 explains that place in detail.

hope this helps !!!

It's certainly not clear from scripture where or what our mansions will be.

There will be no more seas, which will add almost 2/3 of living space.

Revelation 4:10–11
"the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 'Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.'"

the 24 represent the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 Apostles( the church) before the throne. The people of God from Genesis - Revelation.

We cast our crowns/rewards before the feet of Jesus. Its all about HIM not us which is why we give it all to HIM.

We do not serve Christ for rewards we serve Christ because we love Him. And we only love Him because He first loved us !

Amen !

hope this helps !!!

Most people think that the "many mansions'' reference simply means that, in heaven, we will not all be exactly the same, but that there are different rewards for different ones of the saved people.

This is confirmed elsewhere in Scripture when it teaches that although we are all saved by Grace through Faith, we are rewarded (separately) according to our Works.

And to follow up what other posters have already written, the reference to "mansions" does not mean luxury homes.

If there are mansions in New Jerusalem and they are not luxurious, they won't match the rest of the city. A city made of gold, streets of gold, 12 gates 216 ft. high, each made of a single pearl, precious stones on the foundation walls, etc.

Do you think that that is what heaven will be like--literally?

If so, the "mansions" reference goes right along with it. But in truth, all of that is an analogy.

It won't be in heaven, the New Jerusalem will be right here on earth as John said.

If you choose to believe it's an analogy ok, I choose to believe that my mind cannot comprehend what the Lord has waiting for us.
