I've been a Christian for at least a decade. And I've learned that I cannot do good work, because it's not good enough, and I still sin as the sinners. Is that the use of the law? God uses the law in the OT to show me what kind of perfect God He is and pointing me the fact that I can't obey it? Then Christians should look onto Christ? But we're still urged to love our neighbour as ourselves. Although I have repentance from time to time, attending to church, reading and studying the bible, then I'll ask what's the point of hanging onto these now? It seems like I'm just hanging there. I can't wait to see Jesus's return so that we all can go to heaven.

Paul had the same dilemma - Romans 7. He also told us the solution to the problem. It's "through Christ". We will never be completely free of sin, but for sure we should be getting more free as we go in in Christ. We need to know that sin no longer has any hold on because we dies to sin. We need to know that Lord Jesus lives in us in order that we can live as God intends for us to live.

The Law proves to us that we are sinners. Even if we obey partially (like the rich young ruler), there is always a weakness that brings us down. It is intended to bring us to a point where we give up trying and instead depend on the Lord Jesus. When we do that, life changes instantly. We quit trying and start trusting Lord Jesus. Start each day by asking Lord Jesus to live out His life in you, through you and in place of what you are in yourself. Remember that the old "you" died on the cross and the "new" you rose again with Christ. It is really the case that it is "no longer I that lives but Christ that lives in me."

What type of good work have you tried? For 15+ years, I struggled like you, as I kept sinning. I thought to put faith in Christ, would make me perfect, in my actions. That was wrong, and a false pretense I learned by fellow brethren who showed much of a perfect side when in fellowship. This made me feel as I was a bad person always. Especially when serving the Lord, and struggling, thinking I'm not worthy.

In reality, we all deal with sin still, after we put our faith in Christ. Some are obvious, others aren't. This is a truth, no matter where you are in your life with God. 20 years, 45 years, 99 years. Knowing you have sin, is a good sign, as that is the Holy Spirit, convicting the truth of Christ in you! :) So rely on God to teach you how to overcome your battle with each sin. I have found learning about the ramifications helps me. The more truth I learn, through God's Word, the stronger it is to fight temptation.

If you have not, check out Romans chapters 7 to 9. As Aussie Pete mentioned above as well, Paul tackles this very issue. Worth bookmarking to revisit on occasion, as you walk with the Lord.

Your problem is that you don't have give all of you to Jesus. If you stop doing your sins and ask Jesus to help you, you surely be free of that sin my friend.

A Christian’s reconciled relationship with God is meant to, among other things, help him to live in obedience, the right way for the right reasons now as he remains in Christ, living under grace, by the Spirit. It’s still a struggle against sin but one that we’re now empowered to overcome, as we are willing. To put it another way, God will cultivate love in us to the extent that we follow and fellowship with Him. And love, by its nature, fulfills the law (Rom 13:10).

That's actually the correct direction. You don't aim for sinless primarily. It doesn't work that way. You improve your faith instead. Your faith goes up, your sins will go down. At a certain point if your behavior doesn't improve much, it means your faith hasn't improved much. Just don't give up as you are in the correct path, perhaps one day you can make a breakthrough, in faith that is.

For many years, I experienced and believed Christianity had no real down side. It was a happy, easy and rewarding life, everyone should jump at.

I use to teach “we (Christians) all sin lots of times and cannot keep from it, but we are constantly being washed by the blood of Christ, so we are without sin in that case.” That was before I met a group of Christians that risked death for themselves and others by sinning, just any sign of not doing what Christ would be doing in that moment. Here is what happened:

I got thrown into (volunteering if needed) with the youth (13-21 age) prisoners program teaching Bible (one hour on Sunday morning to a group of 14 with three other Christians teaching groups of 14) and I was teaching three groups of “Christians”. The first group were guys (going to school it is called) that start out causing trouble and getting thrown in the tank. Then they start increasingly attending the Bible services, carrying their Bible, being nice, eventually being baptized and saying they are Christian. By the time the parole board meets they have this glowing report showing continued improvement tied to their increased spirituality and are released and they were fun to teach. These guys still carry weapons, are members of a gang, and every prisoner knows they just “went to school” to get out. The second group were converted before they went to prison (grandma conversions), but on the first day they are watching raunchy TV, hanging with a loss group, laughing at off colored jokes, were not always talking about Jesus and were not trying to convert others. Their first day in prison the snitches see this, the snitches talk to the Bulls that approach these “Christians” saying you are not a Christian (doing everything Christ would do) and make them a slave (often sexual) or at best a gang member. They still come to Bible study on Sunday, good students, so they can tell Granny (who visits them Sunday afternoon) what they learned, but they are slaves (sometimes sexually) to some bull. The third group is fanatical, they stick close to each other, they: study, pray, witness to everyone, and avoid even a hint of insincerity that the snitches could see. They carry no weapons, but step between those that are being beaten especially persecuted. This group had grown over the last 3 years from just a couple of guys to now 42, but it came at a high price. Each convert had on the day he was baptized given up the protection of his gang membership, turned over his weapons along with all his possessions (the gang owns everything including them), they were beaten if not by the gang they left, then by other gangs looking for payback and then they were watched constantly looking for any sign the snitches might interpret as weakness (anything less than what Christ would do in the situation, would result in a beating and it could be to death). There is absolutely no privacy and these Christians never wanted to be found alone. They slept in barracks where at least one stayed awake all night praying over the others, so they could sleep without the fear of being smashed in the head in the middle of the night. These guys believed and counted on power from the Holy Spirit, I did not know existed. They come battered and bruised each week hungry for some real meaningful Christ like lesson that goes beyond their group study of 40+hours that week on the same subject, which I could not provide. They mostly helped me with my poor example of Christianity and lack of knowledge and lack of wisdom. They mentored me even though they were only Christian for a few months, but I was a poor disciple and could not keep up with them.

They really did not talk about “not sinning”, but what better thing they could be doing each and every minute of the day and night. If they did sin, even with their thoughts, they confessed immediately to everyone (all around so the snitches could hear it also), asking for help, prays and ideas on doing better, yet this was not a daily action for everyone.

It is not so much not wanting to sin, but wanting to be a Christ like Christian (witness). This was not done to please the guards because the guards did not like them witnessing to them and the fact others might beat on them caused them added work to break up the beatings.

Maybe we do not see the Spirit working in us because we quench Him or are not in situations of really needing Him. Severe persecution brings out the Spirit in those who have the Spirit.

I really feel some did go days without sinning or should I say: “Some went days doing stuff the Holy Spirit could participate with them for 24 hours.”

One example of what I learned from them was: “You do not even try to keep from sinning (be on the defensive), but try to be involved in the next minute, in doing something really good (constantly on the offensive) then the Holy Spirit can be involved with you in doing and you keep doing good stuff all day and night and pick it up the next day”. You just do not have time to be involved in any sinning.

Thank you! This whole idea of separating faith/justification from actually being just/righteous, is not what Christianity is about. Christianity, among other things, is about change, real change, that God wants from and for us, and will accomplish in us as we're willing to follow Him. As new creations. Faith is not an excuse to remain as we were.

I don't know about stopping sinning all sin, seems like very hard task, but we need to be at least clean enough so the Holy spirit is 'comfortable' in us, that is the bare minimum, because if we quench or offend the spirit all the time, that is a No No, we should pray until evey sin that is affecting our communion with God goes away, i have trouble myself, but i'm sort of 'desperate' to try keep the Holy spirit happy.

Could you show one part of the law that you can’t obey?

I think it would be good, if person is born anew as Jesus said, because then it is possible to be righteous.

But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:12-13

He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever is born of God doesn't commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can't sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn't do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn't love his brother.

In Deuteronomy 30:11-14, it says that God's law is not too difficult to obey and that obedience brings life and a blessing while disobedience brings death and a curse, so choose life! So it was presented as a possibility and as a choice, not as something that we can't do. Likewise, in 1 John 5:3, to love God is to obey His commandments, which are not burdensome. If our obedience to God's law were for God's good, then it would have been about trying to be good enough, however, it was given for our own good (Deuteronomy 6:24, 10:12-13), so our obedience is instead about putting our faith in God to guide us in how to rightly live, which is why Jesus said in Matthew 23:23 that faith is one of the weightier matters of the law. In John 5:39-40, Jesus said that the the law testifies about him, so God uses the law to teach us about who Christ is, how to know him, and how to testify about who he is, so obeying the law is the way to look unto Christ. Christianity is just as much about getting heaven into us as it is about getting us into heaven.

Hey there, we can stop sinning and we are suppose to obey the laws of the New Covenant :)

The laws of the New Covenant are the words and teachings of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit writes His teachings in our heart.

Heb 8:10 "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days," says the Lord; "I will put my laws into their mind, I will also write them on their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

2Co 3:3 being revealed that you are a letter of Christ, served by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tablets of stone, but in tablets that are hearts of flesh.
[...]
2Co 3:6 who also made us sufficient as servants of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

It is our responsibility to go to Jesus about our sins and not only confess, but asking for Grace (this is teaching) on how to stop.

Tit 2:11 For the grace of God bringing salvation has appeared to all men,
Tit 2:12 teaching us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;

Jesus teaches us how to stop doing our own personal sins and how to live holy godly lives now. The problem is that many are distracted with the words of men and not following the Word of God Jesus Christ.

Paul says in Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

Paul said in (Gal. 6:3-5, 7) (v.3) For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. (v.4) But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. The book says let every man prove his own work, and if your work is good then you will rejoice in it. (v.5)
For every man shall bear his own burden. That’s right; every man must bear his own burden. You mean you thought that all you had to do was confess the name of Jesus and that was it? Brothers and sisters you must work to get salvation. (v.7) Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. God is not to be played with. Whatsoever you plant, that’s what you are going to reap. Be it good works unto eternal life, or evil works unto eternal damnation. The choice is yours, and your works belong to you. Stop the willful sinning!
