I love Black Licorice but I can't eat it because my BG goes way up because I'm a Diabetic.

I love black licorice too. I used to by real licorice sticks, and chew the twigs. I suspect you could have those, just a natural branch. If not there's anise seed, and fennel. They taste so much like licorice; that I can't tell the difference. I love to crunch on anise seeds. A friend of mine used to grow fennel. That was a real treat to eat the fresh fennel.

Where do you buy anise or fennel? I never see it in stores. And even licorice sticks?

Licorice root is a very serious estrogenic. It should be taken only for a limited time, especially if you're a male. I don't know how much they use in the candy, but I'm sure it adds up.

I've found fennel in the produce section of regular grocery stores. I've also found anise seed in the spice section of regular grocery stores. I've found bulk anise seed at an East Indian food store; and I've found natural licorice, at most natural food stores.

Good to know. Fortunately I haven't had it as a regular treat; although I've thought about it. I'll scratch that idea off my list.

It also has some very good antimicrobial properties, which is why it's used. But it has to be in moderation.

I read somewhere that licorice has the most sugar of any candy,. Black licorice is my favorite. They have a liquor that smells and tastes like licorice. Probably anise.

There's alot of those, like sambucca, pastis, or ouzo.

Licorice is fine in moderation, but if it's all you ate, sure, you could get very sick. Licorice is mostly sugar or corn syrup and has no protein.

Licorice is commonly used in Chinese medicine for all sorts of things.

That certianly is false. Rock Candy would be the most sugar. It ranges from pure sugar to over 99% sugar if it is flavored.

Fresh fennel is in most groceries, and anise seed or ground anise is too... for all whole spice (star anise etc) I buy from the Amish..

How on earth does anyone eat sweets so much it kills them?

You'd think somewhere in there he would have developed serious cravings for fruit and salad and meat...

He ate 1.5 bags per day for several weeks. That's easily doable, even while eating an otherwise healthy diet. It's not a lack of vitamins that killed him.

Do you think most people identify rock candy as "candy" in the usual sense of the word? I doubt it; they probably see it as you described it--sugar in lump form, but nothing blended or packaged or sold in the candy aisle.

Yes that is exactly what the article says: that amount of candy threw his nutrients out of whack, meaning he wasn't getting the correct nutrients and it was severe enough to kill him.

Thing is, our bodies fight such lack of nutrients by giving us severe cravings for the things our bodies are lacking.

When I become too anemic my body goes into serious cravings for things like liver, which I can sit and eat by the pound in a severe enough anemia episode... I've had orange juice cravings so bad it was the only thing I drank for days...

Whenever our bodies are lacking in something, our bodies scream at us to get that imbalance fixed... it is to us to listen without hesitation.

For instance, I don't wait until I crave raw meat or dirt due to anemia, I eat liver when I first start craving it, and it keeps my iron up. Our bodies do tell us what we need. It's kind of amazing really.

So my question is how come this guy ignored every warning sign his body had to be giving him?

There are actually people that have eating disorders, so that would be my best guess about what was happening. My brother has a friend that's diabetic that will only eat a limited variety of fast foods, and it's killing him slowly. It's obvious he has an eating disorder, but it isn't something he's sought treatment for.
