• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Does God give Asperger's to some people so that they can get closer to Him?

Us people with autism/Asperger's do not Interact with the world that well. Then we end up lonely or we start learning and discovering newer things and some who might become Christians sort of get closer to God like myself. I feel like Jesus is the only person who can understand me without ever bullying me. When i close my eyes and pray to God I'm not shy, awkward or selectively mute like when talking to a stranger.

Also the Bible verse in John 15:19 is something I can so relate to!
Like i don't feel as if i truly belong in here. Everything is foreign and unnatural to me.
I hope when Jesus comes back to earth he'll take me away and heal my sick mind

God is not evil and will not do evil so that good may come of it. However, He will work in our circumstance in order to draw us closer. God's ultimate plan is to deliver us from all that hinders and binds us. We can be set free in this life to a degree but ultimate freedom comes when we trade in the old body for the new one.

When I was first saved, I was antisocial, utterly introverted, painfully shy and self-protective. I'd learned to present a different personality depending on who I was involved with, like a Chameleon. For a while, I suffered panic attacks when I was with 20-30 people. I was not able to cope with trying to be what I imagined I should be to that number. If it was a few, O.K., I could cope. When it was a big crowd, I could just be a spectator. The Lord delivered me from this mindset. I don't have to prove anything to anyone because God accepts me as I am. I don't have to be a different person to different people.

Lord Jesus came to set captives free. Ask Him to help you. He will. He's promised. But as you know, it may take some time to study God's word and fellowship with Him so that you can be delivered. The Truth will set you free!

I have asperger's as well. You have given me hope because I had none before. I hope God takes us both and touches our minds and heals us.

I'm another Aspie. I wasn't diagnosed until age 29, back in 2014.

We Aspies have our struggles, but one thing we'll never be, is accepted readily by the world. So in a sense, I think I understand what you're asking. It might be easier, in a sense, for us to sense our need for God. Then again, I've also read that a lot of Aspies have trouble understanding a need for God because of the tendency to take things so literally. So it could go either way in that regard.

At any rate, here we exist, like any other human.

Yes there is the tendency to take things literally which is an Aspie trait. However, I have recently become aware of how my alexithymia is affecting my ability to hear God in the small things of life. The Godincidents which provide the reassurance that God is near.

A recent case where I missed completely a subtext that a friend had written in a letter to my wife and I.
If I miss something like that, which to my wife was completely in your face, then I will miss Godincidents as well.

It makes me feel really sad that I miss all this.

I do believe God can and will use us all for His purposes....now whether that means we as Aspie's are meant to be alone, that I do not believe. We are never alone...Christ is with us now and always.

Long for the Lord’s compassion when you are alone !

When He went ashore He SAW a great crowd, and He had COMPASSION on them, because they were LIKE SHEEP WITHOUT A SHEPHERD. And He began to TEACH them MANY THINGS. -Mark 6:34

When He saw the crowds, He had COMPASSION for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. -Matthew 9:36

When He went ashore He saw a great crowd, and He had COMPASSION on them and healed their sick. -Matthew 14:14

"I have COMPASSION on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. -Mark 8:2

Even when you are in a great crowd, you feel alone, the Lord saw you!

Even when you are in the church,
feel alone; the Lord saw you!

Even when you are harassed, helpless, and alone; the Lord saw you!

Even when you are sick and alone, the Lord saw you !

Even when you are hungry and alone, the Lord saw you !

This is what is written about the Lord’s compassion:

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion TO THOSE WHO FEAR HIM. -Psalms 103:13

Let those who are alone, harassed, helpless, sick, and hungry “fear of the Lord” and the Lord shows His compassion to them.

The Heavenly Father shows His compassion to His children.
This is what the Lord said about the Heavenly Father :

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! -Matthew 7:11

ASK that you may understand and HAVE this FEAR OF THE LORD, that is, to stand in awe of His great love
and find the Lord shows COMPASSION on you !

Let us understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles; for the Heavenly Father have spoken:

My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, -Proverbs 2:1
making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; -Proverbs 2:2
yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, -Proverbs 2:3
THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE FEAR OF THE LORD and find the knowledge of God. -Proverbs 2:5

Yes, understand this fear of the Lord !
Then your heart will be filled with His compassion. Then you know you are not alone.

[QUOTE one thing we'll never be, is accepted readily by the world.[/QUOTE]

I would take 'by the world' to mean by people who don't understand or don't want to understand autism. My son is autistic and is loved and understood by us, his family, as well as friends, people from our church and his social worker and others who provide support. However, his boss and fellow employees do not understand his autism and don't want to understand. They persuaded my son to join a dating site and someone did respond. He wanted to be upfront and tell her about his autism but the other guys told him not to tell her about his autism, in case it put her off.

Yes I can see the desire to be upfront about this and that is good.

However, the question of when to tell anyone is a moot one.
My gut reaction is not to say initially, for then you are making the autism into more than it may be for him and for her. It is not something to be hidden, but is it thee most important thing?

How about let them get to know each other, so that there is more of a context for her to place this bit of info. She may by then have had some experience of him and made a judgement herself as to how to approach the relationship (such as it is at that stage).

I believe God made us unique. I believe we definitely have a close relationship with the Father due to our ability to think rather than talk. We can connect with Him on a deep level. He knows what we need and want to say before we say it. We don't have to try and act like an extrovert with Him.

God does not have Asberger's. How can He give it to anyone? God is in the business of healing and deliverance. We bring sickness and disease on ourselves, one way or another. Blaming God is not the answer.

It's a result of humanity's sin. That doesn't mean it can't come from God or God can't use it.

God is interested in setting you free right now. You will for sure be free when Lord Jesus returns because our mortal bodies will be transformed. When you start to see yourself as God sees you, things will start to turn around. You won't care what other people think of you. God loves you just as you are. He also knows that you have great potential that needs to be unlocked. The truth will set you free - truth as God declares it to be, not what you think about yourself or anyone else's opinion.

I'll agree with the second part of your statement. God does not give people sickness. He can and does remove His protection in certain circumstances. But what would an infant do to so incur God's wrath? Especially when there are wicked people who live into their 90's with no real health problems.

My immediate reaction is why - but the title of the thread gives that answer. However, there is still a question in my mind which is expressed as how? at the moment. I might refine that answer once I have pondered this a bit more.

Not at all. I have two grandchildren diagnosed with autism. They have responded well to years of counselling and they are pretty stable now. The other two grandchildren do not have autism. The human race is fundamentally flawed because of the sin nature. There is a vicious enemy of every human named Satan, who by nature is a thief, a liar, a murderer and destroyer. God is Truth, Love, Giver, Deliverer, Creator and Life. Why would He give evil when He is fundamentally good?
