When we struggle with assurance, the most important thing for us to remember is that salvation is not based upon our performance but upon Jesus' performance.
He secured salvation for every single person that trusts him for it. We just need to make sure that we are doing everything we can to take advantage of the salvation he procured for us.
Salvation is for sinful, wretched, morally polluted people who no longer want to be sinful, wretched, and morally polluted before God.
Regardless of how good we may think we are doing, we are in need of God's grace every moment of every day, and his grace is more than sufficient to meet that desperate need.

We can have assurance of our salvation. Everything that John wrote in his first epistle is to bring to mind to his readers that they have eternal life because they believe on the name of the Son of God.

Hi Charlie 24, thanks so much for replying...i think part of what troubled me was the explanation in James 1:22 and James 2:19.

I'm not sure how to do bible quotes. Edit, oh, they appeared!

So, I've been unsure ever since I can remember that I'm really saved or being saved.
I've struggled with this for so long. I dont know what to do.

Firstly, I want to say:

….don't be anxious for your life, …
Luke 12:22-31

God is extremely good and loving. What ever He will do, will be good in the end. So, there really is no need to worry.

And about saving. I think saving means person is saved from the judgment that would come because of sin. One is saved from that by the forgiveness that was declared through Jesus. It is also for you.

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Mat. 25:46

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, Because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to the captives, Recovering of sight to the blind, To deliver those who are crushed, And to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
Luke 4:18-19

Disciples of Jesus have the right to forgive sins and I would say your sins are also forgiven.

Whoever's sins you forgive, they are forgiven them. Whoever's sins you retain, they have been retained."
John 20:23

However, as Jesus said after forgiveness, person should reject sin. For it is not useful, if old sin is forgiven, if you have new one replacing the old one.

"Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."
John 8:11

But how can that be so, many will ask. And I think it is possible, if person is born anew as Jesus taught. There must happen change in persons hart so that he doesn’t want to reject God anymore.

Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Yahweh your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live. Yahweh your God will put all these curses on your enemies, and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. You shall return and obey the voice of Yahweh, and do all his commandments which I command you this day. Yahweh your God will make you plenteous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, for good: for Yahweh will again rejoice over you for good, as he rejoiced over your fathers;
Deuteronomy 30:6-9

That new covenant was done trough Jesus and by his words there can happen that change.

Jesus answered him, "Most assuredly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can't see the Kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" Jesus answered, "Most assuredly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can't enter into the Kingdom of God! That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Don't marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born anew.'
John 3:3-7

as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:12-13

It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
John 6:63

If person is born of God, he is righteous, as said in here:

He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever is born of God doesn't commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can't sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn't do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn't love his brother.
1 John 3:7-10

And this leads to the final question, what is sin. I think Bible tells that righteous lives, if he is loyal to God and so, the real sin would be that person rejects God.

But the righteous will live by faith. If he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.
Hebrews 10:38

Righteous person may make mistakes, but the difference is that even then, he is loyal to God and regrets, if he has done wrongly and want to be better next time. One example of righteous person is here:

"Two men went up into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: 'God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn't even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Luke 18:10-14

Righteousness is wisdom of the just, right understanding that makes person do what is right. And also, if righteous makes mistake, the wisdom of the just means he understands he has done wrongly and regrets it. And if person regrets something, he doesn’t want to do it anymore. Righteous person doesn’t want to do right because he tries to earn salvation by doing so, he wants to do right, because he loves God and wants what is right and good.

For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.
Pro. 24:16

So, your sins are forgiven and you are saved from the judgment, but from now, remain loyal to God and don’t reject Him.

I'm not sure, that's the issue.....

Best advice would be to talk to your minister of the church you attend on Sunday.

Or to who ever it was who introduced you to Christianity.

1John 5:13,
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

We can have assurance of our salvation. Everything that John wrote in his first epistle is to bring to mind to his readers that they have eternal life because they believe on the name of the Son of God.

John did indeed write to people so that they would understand that they had salvation. That doesn't mean that reading the writings of John will make you understand, but only that if you pay attention to what he wrote and put it into place you will understand that you have salvation.

For example:
1 Jn 5:10 The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son

So John explained the the testimony was not in John's writings but inside yourself!!

In the OP we see a person unsure of that testimony!!

So what do we tell them? Do we tell them to read John's writings and the reading means they have salvation? NO - that was not what John was telling them, he was telling them to look inside themselves!

But didn't the person in the OP already look inside themselves?

Yeah, and they did not find the testimony they were looking for. So now what?

Perhaps they looked for the wrong thing inside themselves, and they just need to go back and look for the right thing. Jesus Christ is the right thing.

So hear is what we need to tell them - Go back and seek the word of the Lord inside you, and see what He has to say to you! Specifically - Ask Jesus Christ if you are saved and listen to His word which is found in your heart!!

Too often we turn people to the Bible instead of turning people to Him like the Bible says!!

I worked in a Christian healing ministry for five years, and regularly people came in telling us that they were not sure they were saved. I did not turn them to the Bible, but like the Bible explains, I turned the to Jesus Christ - quite literally I turned the to Him.

I would have them say a little prayer, something like "Jesus Christ, how do you feel about me?" and then listen to what came across in their spirit inside them. Suddenly they would hear that small voice of His inside them, saying something about how He loved them.

Now we read that faith comes from hearing and that we are saved by faith, so their hearing Him answer their question and tell them that He loved them, in a very personal and unique to them way, gave them the faith to understand that they were saved.

Tears would often come to their eyes as the revelation hit them inside. I have seen them stand their in amazement as they suddenly found out the He was real and did talk to them. I have seen them fall on their knees and praise as the revelation of Him inside them effected them. I don't know exactly how everyone is going to react, because the relationship with Him is very personal indeed. I had a Christian lady that had served the Lord for over 30 years hear His voice for the first time and she just kind of said, 'Wow", and explain that she had heard about people hearing His small voice but that was the first time she had ever heard it.

So are we turning people to the Bible or turning people to Him, like the Bible says? John wrote in order to turn people to Him, so now we are going to turn people to the Bible? Really? Did we not read what John wrote? Do we turn to Him ourselves?

From my relationship with Him personally and from all my experience, I turn people to Him, Jesus Christ!

So if you have a question about whether you are saved, like in the Op. I tell you to go and seek Jesus Christ and asked Him if your are saved. Ask Him how He feels about you. Ask Him what ever questions you do have and then listen inside, because the Word of the Lord that we preach is found in your heart and perhaps in your mouth. He is near you, even if you don't have a Bible handy, He is still near you!! He stands at the door and knocks and if anyone hears His voice and opens the door He will come into them and eat with them. That is not the same thing as saying if anyone reads His book, but read the book so that you will see that we point people to Him.

K2K, prior to reading your post I had been coming round to thinking I was saved So I'm very concerned and stressed.

I think people who know me and those praying for me would have had peace about saying I was.

Please can I ask if you prayed about whether asking me what you described in your post was right for me at the moment? Thanks. I do accept that it's been very helpful for many people.
