Barrasso urges Trump, Senate to move forward to fill Supreme Court vacancy

Senate GOP Conference Chairman John Barrasso called on President Trump and his Senate colleagues Sunday to move forward on a nominee to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, warning whatever they do, Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and his Democratic caucus will "blow up the Senate" if they take power in 2021.

It is not an easy call here. At first I felt there was not time to get it done before the election,, but if they wait, it might prove more difficult to get 50 yes votes in a lame duck session. Personally, in an ideal world, they should wait till Jan. However, we all know that as deeply divided the U.S. political scene is these days, if roles were reversed, the Dems would move forward and not wait until a new President is inaugurated. Anyone who believes otherwise is living in a dream world.

Wow .. I can’t believe I agree with Republicans and Trump in this matter. It is President’s constitutional right and duty to nominate a SCOTUS and it is Senate’s constitutional duty to vote on the nominee and fill the vacant seat.

Republicans in 2016 were wrong and hypocrites not to vote on President’s Obama’s nominee, today they are right but hypocrites. Republican and Trump voter are no better, they love constitution when it work for them, but they hate constitution when it doesn’t work for them.

Regardless of the hypocrisy, US constitution give the authority to fill this position before the election.

As a citizen I have the constitutional right to vote all these hypocrites out of the office, and I will practice that constitutional right this November and two years from now , and then in 2024 until all the Trump enabler are out of office!

One irony is this thing is that those saying that Trump and the Senate should not do what they are supposed to do are also people who laud Justice Ginsburg as the great and wise example of what a jurist should be. She herself said that the duty of the president and Senate was to go ahead and confirm a new justice when a vacancy occurs and not to delay.

That's the bottom line.

If President Trump going to win landslide then there is no reason to intimidate those who come to vote.

The demonstrators were acting legally and within the rules governing partisan displays near a polling place.

But headlines are meant to grab the readers' attention, not be accurate or even in accord with the news story the headline is referring to. :sigh:

The story says at one point they formed a line which forced voters to walk around to reach the polling place. Which sounds pretty disruptive to me. Also pretty stupid, considering they could just as easily have been blocking Trump voters.

Demonstrating for what? What does waving flags and pressuring voters at a polling station demonstrate?

Ignoring the hypocrisy of the Republicans insisting Trump has time to appoint a new justice with 50 days left in office when they insisted in 2016 that Obama didn’t have time with 11 months left, the fact that this is such a big deal at all is a problem. Justices are supposed to be impartial, and it seems we’ve abandoned that idea in favor of pretending the courts get balanced naturally by having different seats filled under different administrations. Now we’re in a situation where a whole set of human rights are at the mercy of a single person. We’re left citing technicalities and precendent to argue over which way it’s going to go, when none of this should be at stake in the first place.

Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to have SCOTUS members elected by the judiciary or even the existing SCOTUS with a confirmatory vote from the senate?
The idea of five justices from each party with those ten nominating five others has been suggested.
