That would be kind of funny, but IMO, Trump only cares about the USSC as far as it's able to fire up his base, and Garland won't fire up his base.

Another low-probability scenario is that Trump deliberately holds off on nominating a replacement until after the election, using his "restraint" to paint himself as a dignified gentleman statesman of sorts, while also using the open seat to fire up conservatives who were on the fence about him.
The republicans already have a majority. To push this far is greedy, and as a coworker of mine put it "pigs get slaughtered". the GOP needs to ensure they keep at least one of the presidency, senate, and house. rushing in a new conservative justice will just drive up voting on the democratic side, and at this point, they have no reason to play nice if they take all 3 houses. The filibuster, all the gerrymandering thats been done, stacking of courts... The dems will play hardball.

The death of RBG is a snare for America. It is a snare for republican and democrat alike. Ted Cruz is calling for the immediate fulfillment of the seat (1) due to a 4+4 situation that would hold up an election determination that is already being anticipated to take months and possibly ending in a civil war. Democrats are calling for civil war and to burn it all down right now (2,3) if Trump nominates before the election.

Whether you are on the left or the right, and especially if you are a Christian, do not get caught up in it.

 America is a representational democracy and a constitutional republic. It's comical how some Republicans are waging a semantic war against democracy.

It's not undemocratic; you're right about that. It is extremely hypocritical of McConnell and his cohorts which exposes the blatant dishonesty of their opposition to Merrick in 2016.
No, we were set up to be a constitutional republic. We have some elements of a representative democracy; some things between the two are interchangeable. We've gotten more like a democracy as the years have gone by, and it doesn't help that in many schools they teach you if is a democracy and that's what so many people say it is. But it was never set up to be one.

Such as electing our representatives democratically?

What is interchangeable between them?

It has always been a representational democracy from the get-go.

The question most on my mind is that when it turns out Amy McGrath (McConnell's opponent in Nov) pulled in $25 million in campaign funds this weekend, what does that mean for Mitch?

I should ease off on this.
The jig's up, might as well ram this through.

America was never a democracy.
It is a representational democracy as well as a republic.

The Democrats objecting to McConnell doing exactly what they wanted done for Merrick is just as hypocritical.
 Holding him to his own standard is hypocritical? Yeah, I don't think so.

The only difference being that the Democrats did not hold the Senate back then and could not do what the Republicans can do now. Should Democrats get control of the House, Senate and Presidency they will simply add Justices to the Supreme Court and pack it in their favor to the applause of many acting so offended by what McConnell is doing .
There is talk of packing, but I doubt they'd do it or even try to do it. An even number of justices would leave too many cases unresolved.

On what legal basis do you say that? And are you suggesting to us the Dems wouldn't seek to fill the seat if all this was reversed?

ummmmm thats what happened 4 years ago with 9 MONTHS to spare, 7 weeks is less then 9 months, the democrats actually went along with mitch's idiocy, but of course mitch is going to be the worlds biggest hypocrit here.

What is undemocratic about it? The people via the Electoral College elected Trump and the Senate has a majority Republican membership. The new nominee gets a vote and democracy wins the day.

4 years ago the will of the people was to wait for a election 9 months before the election. Now 7 weeks before it, the will of the people is what happened 4 years ago, you guys are a complete joke.

McConnell Statement on the Passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg | Republican Leader

Mitch McConnell has already straight up admitted he intends to rush a Supreme Court nominee through the Senate, ahead of the election. Even as he admits he stonewalled the previous nomination ahead of the 2016 election.

If you Google the political procedures for Supreme Court nomination, there are all kinds of circus show, involving "nuclear options", showmanship ahead of Congress's own elections, and such. Looking forward to all the things we are about to hear "the left" is doing.

Goodbye America. Democracy was nice while it lasted.
That is politics. Trump did not get rich by being fair or ethical.

Of course it doesn't. Following the same procedure that has been used since the early days of our Republic is certainly not a threat to democracy, etc. Ironically, the real threat is from the other side with its multiple challenges to our country's voting procedures.

Encouraging illegal residents to vote, allowing vote harvesting, counting ballots received after election day, using the "Top Two" system of elections in which only one party is on the November ballot, eliminating or sidestepping the Electoral College, giving the vote to 16 year olds, proposing to pack the Supreme Court, and sending ballots or ballot applications to people who are not eligible to vote represent a much more serious threat to democracy than simply nominating and confirming the next Supreme Court justice in the usual way!

I disagree. Christians should not go this far in supporting the agents of chaos just to pine for stable norms when the expected results occur.

Basic parliamentary rules should say that if a Supreme Court seat vacates close to an election, then either hold off the vote or don't. Trump Partiers want to have it both ways, which honestly, doesn't surprise me. Integrity is gone. The sole law of the land is what Trump wants, Trump gets. Which incidentally is also the law of the New York mob.

The usual way? So no debates or votes before the election then, as McDonnell spelt out 2016.

Oh wait a minute that doesn't count because Obama was a democrat and bla....

I don't think there is a point in having a discussion. The Republicans that wish to advance the nomination of a new Supreme Court Justice are only doing so because they want to troll and gloat. Being hypocritical and ignoring principles is the point, they don't actually care about the Supreme Court, they simply look at this as "owning the libs."
