Good question on the tithe, Proverbs says bring the tithe/first fruits of our INCREASE. That’s the profit. Ex. You pay $1000 for a car and spend $300 to fix it up and then sell it for $2000, you tithe off the $700 you profited. The $1000 you paid for the car and $300 you put into it should have already been tithe paid money. As for the second part, I hope I’m understanding your question right, -God doesn’t say tithe unless your church no longer has overhead. The tithe is more for your benefit than it is for your church. It represents your faithfulness to God and gratitude for what He has given. It insures the windows of Heaven are opened over your life. Mal. 3:10
Thank You Pastor, first fruits of our increase makes sense.
When you said God does not say tithe unless your church has no overhead were you talking about a debt free Church?
Debt free Churches still have to pay bills, but are not under the pressure of a mortgage.
But if they want to grow in out reach the entire congregation has to move by Faith.

You said God dosent
say tithe unless your church doesent have overhead.
Im trying to grasp this.
Right, just meant to say that going to a church that is debt free doesn’t free it’s members from their duty to tithe and give offerings. Blessings

Hey all question. I built a house some 35 years ago and the cost including the land was around $130,000. Over the years I put around $20,000 in improvements. I sold the house for around $320,000 and my wife feels we should pay a tithe on the sale. What are your thoughts?

Tithing is an act of praise. I believe God is blessed at the act of praise, not the dollar amount.

Sorry all, I have not been getting alerts(emails) that there are new posts so I am just now seeing all the responses. First off, thanks all.

I also lean towards we are not required to pay a tithe but give as purposed in yourr heart as 1 Cor 9:7 states. But even though I lean that way I have paid a +-10% tithe on my income for the last 40 years. Only in the last 5 years have I relooked at why I am doing that. Giving as directed by Holy Spirit does seem more in line with the new covenant.

Here is where I am scratching my head if God does require 10% on increase. If you buy a house for $100,000 and 20 years you sell it for $200,000 and then go by another house odds are you will not be buying a nicer or bigger house since all house prices have rose so you will probably end up in a comparable house. So, is that $100,000 gain really profit? It does not help you buy something nicer unless you move to an area where house costs are lower. So, if you pay 10% on the profit you would end up with $10,000 less which means you could end up with a house that is not comparable to what you left. Again, thanks everyone for your input
If you are selling the house to buy another of similar or greater value, then you are not making an increase on which to tithe.

If you were selling a second property and pocketing the cash as spending money, then maybe tithe on the increase.

In the NT, we are not required to pay tithes of any kind. Paul tells us instead to be cheerful givers. It is simply a choice, not an obligation.

It is more important to volunteer to help others than give money.
