Early on, doctors and nurses desperately needed more N95 masks.

So that if ordinary Americans bought all the N95s, the nurses and doctors would not have enough and would all get sick at once.

And in March and April many doctors and nurses did not have enough N95s available, and some had to use other less good masks, or even reuse the same single N95 for many days, though they get increasingly dirty.

Remember all of that part?

Ok...

Later, it was learned that even less-good masks -- even masks that let some very small amount of virus through -- would help non-medical people on daily trips to the store and such, for 2 reasons.

First the main reason first known: the masks help block coughs/sneezes and also droplets expelled during talking....

And later, a 2nd good effect became clear:
if a person only gets a very small amount of virus when exposed the first time, they overcome it much easier than if they are exposed to a large amount the first time.

Now we know that these common masks most people wear, even though they are not perfect, help a lot! Both to contain a lot of the droplets that people expel when they talk and breathe or cough, but also to protect others from breathing in a large amount of virus. 2 good effects.

We'd like very much for at least one or more of the many coming various vaccines to be highly effective.

Even as good as wearing a better quality common mask such as a multilayer densely woven cloth mask for example (which is very helpful in reality).

I found some old N95 masks from some old woodworking projects. And right on them they say "Misuse may result in sickness or death". Hmmm.

Remember them telling us how we had to wash our hands every time we turned around? Not so much any more.

Their advice has been 'fluid'. I don't mind if they adapt after they learn something. I do mind when their advice appears arbitrary. This has been a very political disease. If you want it to go away, vote Democratic Party. It will then go away right after the election. If you want four more years of it vote Republican. Then Trump can be impeached for Corona Virus because everybody in the Democratic Party knows it's all his fault anyway.

One of the odd, surprising and for quite a while not easy to understand things about this new Covid 19 virus was that it became apparent (way back in March) that younger people were less susceptible on average, did better on average even than healthy people in the prime of life --

So that elementary age kids better on average even than people in their 20s-30s, which is quite remarkable and not at all typical for a virus as far as I understand.

It was only much later that we began to learn why this surprising and odd thing is so.
(now, one can learn why, if they are inclined to go into details)

Doesn't it make sense that when a novel virus works differently than other viruses it takes time to figure out what in the world is going on. Several things were different, and it took time. So, I don't blame public health officials for not knowing all that mattered the most early on.

It is a disgrace. Never would have happened with religion even when the satellites mysteriously didn’t get stuck in the firmament.

I'm all for them learning. And they did. Deaths are way down, and that is mostly because they now know better how to keep a patient alive. All to the good. But it seems like they have also manipulated us quite a bit. We are in the 180th day of a two week shutdown after all.

Yeah, the statewide lockdown thing was a crude, blunt tool to slow the virus. Now we can do a lot better, with local restrictions that are much more precise, and the only universal thing is mask wearing and avoiding prolonged indoor contact with non-household members without mask wearing. It seems generally many companies are simply working with masks as the norm.

(This is interesting in a 2nd way also: in South America I heard that the ordinary flu is very tamped down by all the mask wearing.
And just now I see that's general:

All of this makes me wonder what life after COVID is going to look like. Some people already seem institutionalised to it all, as if split screens and dancing around in your pyjamas is cool.

Masks I've come round to - after all, we wore smog masks in the 50s and 60s which was basically the same thing - and before that it was gas masks, and I distinctly remember wearing a surgical mask for a day in Tokyo a few years back to see what it was like. But zoom calls and onesies? Let's NOT go back there EVER again.

I just want to see a bit of humility from these politicians and scientists. If you don't fully understand, just come out and say "we don't know" instead of fudging it. Because that's how the confusion starts...

Some people have gotten COVID-19 twice in a short period. So a vaccination might not be the best. I never trusted don't use mask. I believe they said that. Because by February hospitals wear hiding mask, Because they were hard to get. When mask were easier. They change their tone. People should have been paying more attention to China. Hazmat suits and spray downs.
