Young adults can live at home and be in school or working ; it's not always so they can just lay around all day smoking pot or refuse to work or just be spoiled brats. I really don't see why there would be anything wrong with young adults living at home and contributing to the household. I know many that do just that and their family ties are very strong which is something worthwhile in a world focused on just money and gain. I lived at home as a young adult and people said all sorts of mean and hateful things to me and about me about it , including that I was socially stunted. People that say things like that are just mean; it wasn't their life or business. People who say things like that about others really have no idea what people are dealing with and should be quiet. I was dealing with an extremely painful breakup in my life during that time; the person I had spent a lot of time with and thought I would marry. It was extremely crushing and no I didn't want to go and live on my own right after that.

I think I turned out really well in my 30's and I still have a tremendous relationship with my parents and wouldn't hesitate to take them in my home if they needed help with anything.

Yes, I lived at home with my parents right out of college and worked for 5 years while living with my parents. I bought a house at age 25. Oh and "gasp" I didn't have a job after I graduated college. For 3 months I was jobless but going to interviews every week until I was offered a job with benefits and a salary. And I was only able to buy a house on my own because I had lived at home and because I lived in an area with a low cost of living and I had a professional job. I didn't have massive debt and I was able to save my salary because I wasn't renting and paying for other things that go with that.

one can't always get a job they "want" right out of college

so a graduate can sit at home for years waiting for that perfect job or get any job while continuing to pursue the perfect job

it often takes many years to even get the perfect job....working your way up
And how do you save for a house when you’re working a low wage job and paying off tens of thousands of dollars in student debt? It’s literally impossible in most cities.

This seems to have turned into a very materialist thread.

apparently, started thread with not the right link for what I wanted to discuss...

which is "so many young adults living with their parents"

having a house or place to live is not being materialistic

And why do you have a problem with young people living with their parents?

who needs sleep anyway when you're young?

You can’t work your way through most colleges now though. That’s a thing of the past. And young people need sleep.

I see what it does to parents such as my 60 + neighbor
she is seriously stressed plus said the almost 30 yr olds w/o jobs do nothing to help out

should people close to retirement age be supporting adults kids?

everyone loves their kids but they have to move out sometime....

But that sort of situation does not encompass all the situations of young adults living at home. Many young adults living at home DO help out their parents- with chores, with getting household items , and even paying rent. Just because you see that situation with your neighbor or read some sensational piece online doesn't mean that ALL young adults that live at home are doing that.

Your profile says be kind and compassionate. So far I have seen judgement and superioty.

only stating facts, no judgement

and he's mowed another single woman yard
we help neighbors all the time....bring them food, give money anonymously, etc

Well you are not stating facts. Many young people would like to move out of their parents home but they can't afford it. You say get jobs but as other members have said not all areas can allow that geographical, so again you don't have the facts.

Then it's up to your parents to talk to them and set boundaries. But it doesn't mean that all young adults that live at home with their parents are acting in a similar manner. Your life and choices were not "better" or superior. Life worked out for you in a way that made sense for you and it sounds like you had an economy at that time that aided you to do that. Had you not have met your husband, where would you be right now? Maybe they have had hardships that made it harder for them to move on or whatever. But if your mother doesn't like them there, it's on her for telling them something contrary to what she wanted and for putting up with behavior that she doesn't like instead of talking to them about it.
