It really depends on where you live. I grew up in the south and was able to buy a nice house in my 20s as a single. I did live with my parents until I was 25 while working a professional job and was able to save for a downpayment. The cost of living was low. Now I live in the northeast and a single doing that is not really possible as the cost of living is astronomical compared to the south. I worked with many young professionals still living at home with their parents. Some get married and move out, some chose to live in multi generational homes in order to share costs. My husband lived at home until we got married and we were able to buy a home together because of shared savings and income. He wasn't able to do that as a single living where he was even though his savings and income was much much more than mine as a single.

christine,

That may be true for you but less so for others who live elsewhere. We must guard against expecting younger generations to mirror our behavior. My daughter lives at home and we agreed she'd remain until she marries. I see little reason to waste money on rent she could save and invest.

Yours in His Service,

~Bella

...I would add that prior to the post WW2 boom days, it was not uncommon for newly married couples to live in their parent's home....out of economic necessity.

The lifestyle and standard of living in which a lot of my generation was raised is out of reach to my generation. This isn't happening by choice. The economy that once supported a fairly stable middle class no longer exists. Neither do the resultant career opportunities. During the tail end of the George W. years and through all of the Barack years, a lot of my generational cohort had to survive working multiple part time jobs.

The end result is less wealth owned by my generation. But the upshot is that most of us are sincerely not greedy. Because we've never had an opportunity to be.

The reckoning due for Boomers is the stuff legends are made of. Their day is coming.

The economy once supported single earning households. US manufacturing employees had a competitive advantage from the 1950's - early 1980's. That all begin to change when the foreign work could produce the same product for a tenth of the cost.....

I don't expect educated young adults to do menial work or heavy labor. If they can reduce their expenses by remaining at home and seeking employment that utilizes their skills and training they should.

why not?

I disagree because any employment is better than no employment

plus it's easier to get a job when one has a job
seen SO many posts on forums of people waiting for that perfect job

but one has to start somewhere

Why was it a problem that your sisters were living at home if all parties that mattered agreed with the arrangement? It's not what a lot of people want; but different people want different things. I don't really see it as wrong unless they were taking advantage of your parents or your parents were taking advantage of them.

It may not have been what you have chosen for yourself, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. Like I said before, if all parties are okay with the arrangement it has nothing to do with you. Historically, it's how things were for centuries.

what do you mean?
I mean that Boomers have no idea how much Millennials hate them. And pretty soon, we'll be making healthcare decisions for them.

Sleep well, Boomers.

OK all the young adults should continue to live with their parents as in the OP

That's not really what anyone here said......If a young adult has to live with parents due to necessity or choice it's just not the end of the world for them or civilization.
