Just curious what phone carrier everyone is using and if they'd recommend their provider for service for someone else. I am using Verizon and have had zero issues.

Sprint. It was great where I used to live in PA. Not as good here in WV, but I'm told that the mountains here cause cell issues so I don't know that that is unique to Sprint.

I think it depends on where you live. Verizon here works great outside of town but not in town or in the canyon where people drive to work. AT&T works best here, that's why we switched from Verizon.

All I will say is, the worst carrier in the U.S. is better than the best carrier in some other countries. I will get international roaming on my U.S. carrier wherever I can. Wish I could make calls from overseas, to overseas using my US international roaming

That being said:. I would never, ever recommend any other country allow Ver-Spy-Zon to enter their markets.

I use Tracfone and absolutely love it.

Prior to that, I had Sprint, which I also liked. I had switched to Tracfone's pay-as-you-go plan because it was so much cheaper for me. However, I had looked into rejoining Sprint a few years back, to purchase a new iPhone and sign up for a $50-per-month unlimited-everything plan they were offering at the time.

However, it proved to be not quite as simple as one would expect. I didn’t realize Sprint's vetting process just to buy a phone and phone-plan was going to be as involved as it was. I had to verify all this information about my previous residences, etc. You’d think I was attempting to adopt a child. Long story short, I wasn’t approved, and they told me to come back in 60 days. Remember, this is after having been a customer of theirs previously.

Soon after that strange process took place, I get a flyer in the mail from Sprint advertising that $50-per-month offer in which I had been interested, and which read, “Come back, we miss you!” Yeah, right. I tried that and you turned me away, genius.

Later, I received a letter from Sprint explaining the reasons why they couldn't take me back as a customer: "We were unable to verify your identity". It went on to say they wished me well in finding another cellphone plan. Seriously?!

Then, several weeks later, Sprint sent me four copies -- in four separate envelopes, and all arriving simultaneously on the same day! -- of another letter indicating I need to call them to verify my identity. I had thought they'd washed their hands of me. Instead, these guys seemed to be having a really hard time letting go! Of course, I wasn't playing that game anymore.

So, I've been sticking with Tracfone. No hassle sign-up (again, I'm not asking to adopt or foster children... it's just a phone, for heaven's sake), and affordable, good quality service. And because I pay for what I need when I need it, I'm not spending nearly as much on a cell plan as I would otherwise.

My wife likes Tracfone's pay as you go model as well. She doesn't use that many minutes. The main thing to watch is they have minutes and service time requirements. It is the service time that usually becomes the issue. So she likes the one year of service and 1500 minutes/texts/1.5 gig of data card.

And while I usually never shop there QVC has some great deals on packages. You can get the phone usually the same price as most outlets or the tracfone site. But they also throw in a case, a car charger, and often another accesory (stand, Bluetooth wireless earbuds, back-up battery, etc.) and a 1500 minute/texts/1.5 gig of data offer as well. The minutes package usually costs a little over 100 dollars on its own, so this works out well. And I don't know if it is always the case, but even when she added the new phone to her existing number, instead of starting new service, it still gave her the minutes package. She was thrilled with the deal.

I considered switching to tracfone. I am using Straight Talk which at the time was a good unlimited talk and text package with some data at 35 dollars. Now there are some cheaper options, but they have good service, so trying to decide if switching is worth it.

I also am considering getting and unlocked phone and switching to Mint where you can get a decent 15 dollar per month option that still has unlimited talk/text, and then some data on top of it.

Anyone tried Mint yet? My understanding is that it is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) which uses T-Mobile's network.

I am now on the Lifelife Obama Phone program. My carrier is Qlink. I get 3gb of data, and unlimited talk/text per month for free. Very nice as I am low income and disabled.
