"Come, follow Me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
That seems to be the Berean Study Bible version, the only one that matches the words exactly. It seems quite clear, and agrees pretty well with most of the others.
Interpretation can be a very opinionated process. Please take my ideas with a large grain of salt.
We know from elsewhere that Jesus wants us to take the path He is showing us, and that that path leads to a new Kingdom unlike any ever seen on Earth before.
Jesus is talking to fishermen who use nets to catch fish. I think he wants us to metaphorically "catch" people -- but what is the net? I could quote scriptures here, but I'll just say that in my opinion Jesus wants us to share "The message of the Kingdom". Would that be the good news that Jesus offers us eternal life? It might be worth reading Acts chapter 2 where Peter repeats prophecy of a coming Kingdom, then says, 22 “Men of Israel, hear these words! Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved by God to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as you yourselves know, 23 him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed; 24 whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it.
The word for soul is not used in the original Greek of this passage. I think it's clearer to understand if we read it as is, and figure out that the "caught fish" were to be transformed, heart and soul, by the message. The TLB wants to be sure we don't overlook the fact that the very inner being, the soul and the spirit, of the men would be affected.
