2 Corinthians 3:6 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

What does the word of God, kill?

Why does the letter killeth?

What is the letter killing?

Why would the letter kill the spirit if that is the probably effect?

Have you ever noticed this verse in the text, now in Hebrews 4:12 it talks about how the bible (letter) word of God, is sharper than the sharpest two-edge sword.

Why?

Why is it that the word of God can be used, as though a an medieval solider equipped with a sword which is drawn to the neck of his enemy ready to slice the neck at any given moment?

Mishandled understanding?

Lost in translation, and teachings from others who believe they know but do not know truly what the word of God is saying?

Why does the spirit give life?

How come the spirit is the only way to gain life?

How do you live by the spirit?

Who gives the spirit?

Why do we even need the spirit?

Does the spirit transform us?

Does anyone have any answers to these questions!?

A friend of mine describes those who have only the written word like this: it is like a pen without ink. When you write with it, nothing comes out but the paper is scratched. I've heard numbers of preachers that left me feeling condemned; less encouraged and built up than when I sat down to listen. There are others that lift me up in my heart, even though they preach on similar subjects. Lord Jesus said that the words he spoke are Spirit and life. The words the Pharisees spoke were lifeless, even though they quoted the same Bible as Jesus.

The job description for the Holy Spirit is in John 16

"I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it. 13However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. 14He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you. 15Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you."

In reality, the Holy Spirit is Lord Jesus in a form that we are able to receive. He will lead us and guide us and cause us to bear fruit - if we will depend on Him alone. Ask God to reveal these things to you. If you mean business with God, He will indeed transform you.

The letter kills because it condems us as sinners. Eg. The letter of the law, kills because no one could keep it, however in the same way, the law could of brought life, because if anyone kept it, they would of had life.

Hence its a two-edged sword, the same letter condems those that are unrighteous, also brings life to those who are righteous. Depending on what side your on.

Eg. If god were to judge by the word, anyone who hasnt come to Jesus, the word of God brings death.

Anyone who has come to Jesus, the word of God then brings life.

Its not a perfect analogy, just to show how the word can kill one man and how it bring life to another. However all have sinned so its a death sentance for everyone.

39You study c the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

7The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

9You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life d because of righteousness.

The letter of the Law kills ... because noone is able to keep it, ... and the penalty for not keeping the Law is death.

The spirit of the Law gives life, because it leads us into and maintains us in the will of God, ... without killing us for the slightest infraction.

Remember Uzzah, who died because he touched the Ark of the Covenant, ... even as he sought to keep the Ark from falling ... as the Ark was being transported to Jerusalem.

One could say, from this example, that Uzzah lived by the spirit of the Law (i.e. the safe transport of the Ark to the city of God), ... while he was killed by the letter of the Law (i.e. the prohibition against touching the Ark).

We live by the spirit of the Law ... by seeking to please God with our lives ... by loving Him with all of our might (which is inadequate to the task), ... and by loving our fellows even as we love ourselves.

We need the Holy Spirit, given by God, dwelling with us to maintain a walk with God ... and thus live by the spirit of the Law.

Think of it this way ... God has ought out and initiated a relationship with us. Our response is to live life in relationship to ... and in harmony with God.

However, we need help to fulfill our role of living out relationship with God.

God has told us what pleases Him. That is the Law.

God gives us the presence of the Holy Spirit to guide us and to mold us into fit companions/children of God ... who please Him with our lives.

When I married my wife, ... she had already expressed to me what pleased her ... and she has lived with me for 20 years hence, to school me into being the best husband for her that I can be. It's a training process ... hopefully I get better every day.

And I endure this because I love her ...

God blinded the Pharisees from understanding scripture limiting them to a forced literal interpretation only. We see this also with some sects that force literalism on to every scripture. But with the Holy Spirit, you learn what scripture means instead of what it merely says.

People miss the meaning of symbolic prophecy looking for the symbol to appear instead of what it represents.

Are you saying Jesus won't actually be spitting swords at the gentiles when he returns? And the lake of fire may not actually be a bbq pit where sinners bodies roast forever? But where's the good news without those kind of events?

Normally, we cannot understand prophecy until after fulfillment. Those who foretell the future using the bible are false prophets or worse.

So the sword-spitting may happen? Exciting stuff, keep an open mind to the literal fulfilment of prophecy. Sure.

2 Corinthians 3:6 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

What does the word of God, kill?

Transgression of Gods law kills. The wages of sin is death.

Why does the letter killeth?

Transgression of Gods law kills. The wages of sin is death
Because all have sinned ... all have transgressed the letter of the law ... we all deserve death

What is the letter killing?

Our earthly life .... and eternal life possibility if we do not remain in Him.

Why would the letter kill the spirit if that is the probably effect?

Transgression of Gods law kills. The wages of sin is death
Because all have sinned ... all have transgressed the letter of the law.
However, because of what Jesus did ... we will not be condemned by the letter of the law ... we will be judged as not guilty because of all that Jesus did. He paid our eternal "sin debt".

Have you ever noticed this verse in the text, now in Hebrews 4:12 it talks about how the bible (letter) word of God, is sharper than the sharpest two-edge sword.

Why?

It is the letter of the law that brings us to repentance and keeps us striving (continuing) in our relationship with Jesus. Without the letter of the law we would not know what sin is.

*****

Why does the spirit give life?

Because God is the creator and sustainer of all life.

How come the spirit is the only way to gain life?

Not only does God spirit sustain our earthly life .... but through receiving His Holy Spirit through Jesus we will have eternal life when He returns. Jesus paid our "sin debt" and we can only receive eternal life through Him.

How do you live by the spirit?

Accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior and being receptive to His teachings from His Word and being receptive to the Holy Spirit. With His Holy Spirit working through the believer changes will happen.

Who gives the spirit?

God does.

Why do we even need the spirit?

We need the Holy Spirit to help us endure the pitfalls of our current world, to change our thinking and to ensure our salvation.

Does the spirit transform us?

Yes ... and the transformation is an on-going process over our entire earthly life. We will have struggles and will mess up here and there ... but one should experience their life becoming more and more conformed to His image (becoming more like Jesus) ... mostly through studying His Word and being receptive to it's teachings.

The distinction between the letter of the Torah and the spirit of the Torah is not in regard to following different sets of laws, but in regard to the manner in which someone obeys a law without regard to the intent behind it. For example:

Leviticus 19:12 “‘Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.

Someone who was focused on obeying the spirit of this law would understand that its intent is for us not to swear falsely, whereas someone who was focused on obeying the letter of this law exactly how it was written would understand that we can swear falsely just as long as we don't do so in God's name, which incidentally is what Jesus was criticizing the Pharisees for doing in Matthew 5:33-37. In Matthew 23:23, Jesus said that justice, mercy, and faithfulness, so the Torah is intended to teach us how to express God's character traits. So obeying The Torah according to the letter undermines both the intent of what God has commanded His followers to do and why He has commanded us to do it, which therefore leads to death just as assuredly as refusing to submit to it.

Why does the spirit give life?

How come the spirit is the only way to gain life?

How do you live by the spirit?

Who gives the spirit?

In Deuteronomy 30:15-20, obedience to the Torah brings life and a blessing, while it is disobedience that brings death and a curse. In Deuteronomy 32:47, it is our very life. In Proverbs 3:18, she is a tree of life for all who take hold of her. In Leviticus 18:5, Galatians 3:12, and Romans 10:5, the one who obeys the Torah will attain life by it. In Matthew 19:17, Jesus said that if we want to enter into eternal life, then obey the commandments. So obedience to the Torah brings life and the Spirit gives life because the Spirit has the role of leading us to obey (Ezekiel 36:26-27). In Romans 8:4-7, those who walk in the Spirit are contrasted with those who have minds set on the flesh who refuse to submit to the Torah. In Galatians 5:19-22, everything listed as works of the flesh that are against the Spirit are also against the Torah while all of the fruits of the Spirit are in accordance with it. In Acts 5:32, the Spirit is given to those who obey God.

The comparison is between "the letter" and "the Spirit". There is no "spirit of the law". (Torah)

Were the Ten Commandments engraved in letters on stone?
If so, they were the transitory ministry that brought condemnation and death, that has no glory now. The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

2 Corinthians 3:6-11
He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9 If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

Thanks, but there is no such thing as "the Law of the Spirit" either.

He is speaking of "the Law of the Spirit of Life."

Rom. 8:2
For the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of Sin and Death.

Actually he explained it very well.

“But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.” (Romans 7:6).

We are delivered from the 613 laws within the Old Testament Law of Moses. We are now to serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. The oldness of the letter is the Old Law or the Laws given to Moses (the 613). We are now under a New Covenant with new commands. But the Old Testament Law of Moses as a whole or package deal is the letter that kills. Why? Because if you lived under the Old Covenant before Christ's death, and you broke certain laws within the Law of Moses, you could be stoned or killed for breaking the Law. That is why it is called the letter that kills.

Romans 8:2 says,
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

The Law of sin and death is the Law of Moses as a whole or package deal. We are under New Laws because we are under a New Covenant. One of these new laws we are under is the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. So Christians who say we are not under any kind of Law simply do not know what they are talking about. Jesus said: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34). The words of Jesus here are formatted in Scripture or letters, but His words in the New Testament are not the letter that kills. This was the Old Law or the Law of Moses. The Old Law is the letter that kills, and it is not the laws under the New Covenant.

The Old Law is the letter that kills, and it is not the laws under the New Covenant.

The fact that some of the Laws of Moses carried the death penalty for breaking does not mean that that is what he was referring to by the phrase "law of sin and death", especially when Paul directly contrasted the two in Romans 7:25. Furthermore, Paul equated the Law of Moses with the Law of the Spirit by contrasting them both with the law of sin and death. After all, the Law of Moses was given by God and the Spirit is God, so it is the Law of the Spirit. In Romans 8:4-7, those who walk in the Spirit are contrasted with those who have minds set on the flesh who refuse to submit to God's law. The Spirit does not have the role of leading us to rebel against the Father, but rather the Spirit has the role of leading us to obey His law (Ezekiel 36:26-27). In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus summarized the Mosaic Law as being about how to love God and our neighbor, as that is how he loved us and how we are to love as he loved.
