I've been writing a Christmas book. I am aware that it is summer time, but I'm wanting to try to publish in November so I can possibly have some book sales this holiday season. It has my childhood holiday memories stirred up. It's tricky to put words to a feeling and to put them into a book in a way that conveys that.

I've been watching Christmas commercials from the 80's and 90"s on youtube, listening to Christmas music, and watching Christmas movies. I actually remember many of the commercials.

Christmas was the best time of year for me when I was growing up because my family was very dysfunctional, but each year they would do a lot to pull together the best Christmas they could. It was full of fantasy, fun activities, music, decorations, stories, ect. Everything felt magical, and for a long time I believed in the magic.

Does anyone have special things they remember about Christmas? Don't worry, I'm not mining for story content. That's already plotted and outlined and I've got plenty to go on from my own memories and my research on customs around the world.

I used to live in a children's home as a child and was looked after by care staff.
I always got very excited each Christmas Eve because I knew that Father Christmas would be creeping in and putting a large sack of presents and a stocking at the end of my bed. I would try and force myself to stay awake to see him, but I never succeeded. One day, I was awake long enough to hear members of staff walking down the landing late at night. I had a chat with one of my friends at the home the next day and we thought something wasn't right. So we confronted a member of staff and asked them who was on the corridor. "Oh that was us. Didn't you know, if children are awake, then Father Christmas turns into a member of staff". I believed that explanation for a short while, but eventually I put two-and-two together and confronted the matron about it. "Father Christmas doesn't exist" I claimed. She looked at me, her face went bright red with embarrassment: "Don't tell the other children!"

Back in the 1930s Judge Musmanno of the Pittsburgh Court of Common Pleas ruled that Santa Claus does exist.
