Mark 2:27
23And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. 24And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? 25And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? 26How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? 27And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Observing the Sabbath was an Old Testament/Covernant requirement, and does not carry over to the New Testament/Covernant. The church traditionally met on the first day of the week in homes for convenience sake, to catch up with each other and see how everyone was faring. They shared a meal, and sometimes a prayer, a scripture and sang a psalm, but generally shared what was happening in their lives.

church traditionally met

correct keeping sunday is a church tradition (not taught in His Word) as opposed to the 4th commandment that people choose to ignore .... they don't ignore or dismiss any of the other 10 commandments (and do indeed carry them over into the new covenant) ... completely non-sensical. Jesus and the apostels' kept the 7th day Sabbath. Either we follow in the footsteps of Jesus and the teachings of the apostels .... or not.

Matthew 15:3
He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

1 John 2:6

the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He (Jesus) walked.

The basic answer is "yes," although this question, which has some possible "what ifs" involved, is the kind of question you might want to ask your pastor.

You ask a good question, Christian dbz. Where would you go for an authoritative answer on such an important question? You'll get a variety of opinions here, but would you really want to rely on their authority? For what it's worth, here's my opinion.

I encourage you to study what God says and draw your conclusions based on His words. Look deeply at His intent: you'll see that He loves you and wants your life to work right and that He gave you information that can make you effective enough for the challenges of life. For instance, someone referenced Jesus and His disciples in the field of grain. It might have been that the Pharisees and lawyers rightly considered the Sabbath rule to not work, such as not harvest. They might have also wrongly concluded that to pick one ear to eat now when you were out without food and were hungry was the same as harvesting the whole field to last for the whole year. I found it interesting that Jesus counters their accusation with a real illegal situation: David and his men eating the shewbread, which was only for the priests, when they were hungry. It's not listed in David's sins. (But, it also wasn't without consequence.) Both of those situations point to God's graciousness to help us when a rare exception is needed in the setting of having a set of rules that help us overall.

I don't know if that list you presented is "acceptable" activities on the Sabbath. If I were asking for myself, I would study what God says, ask for His help, and base my decisions on lining up with the principles I see there. It is important to realize that the basic principle was to remember the day as holy (separated as special) to God, given to a group of people who just left hundreds of years of hard slavery in a country of idolaters. It was highly likely they hadn't seen a day off in quite a while, and here they were being not only offered a weekly day to rest and learn how to live in the greatest freedom mankind could experience in a sustainable community, they were commanded to take that time off. Nobody need to experience guilt for taking the day off: God commanded it for the whole community. In another place, God identified Himself as the One giving them the Sabbath, which reflects nicely on God having taken the 7th day of creation off, where He rested and was refreshed after making all this wonderful world and mankind. A human comparison would be a date-night for married people, so they don't forget their first love when the struggles and complications of family start pushing in to that special relationship. I tend to think God meant to keep the concept into this new covenant, and in all my searching, I can't see any Scriptures that show that Jesus supported abolishing the Sabbath commandment. Am I saved by what list I choose of what to do and not do and whether I do it or not? No, I'm saved by the blood of Jesus, by God's grace through faith, which is the gift of God - no boasting for any works of righteousness that I've done. But my response of obedience would be to hear what He says, believe it, and act on it. To do less is not to take Him seriously.

Hoping well for you, friend.

I am okay with all of the things you mention in that first sentence. As I've said elsewhere, the restrictions as I see it are as follows:

  • No paid employment
  • No household chores, including preparing meals that require more than simple reheating before they can be consumed
  • No buying or selling of goods or food, including going out to restaurants
  • Any activity that could be described as "work", such as homework, working out, etc.
  • Any other activity done out of a sense of duty or obligation, including religious devotion or spending time with family, etc. These are good and right to do when we feel properly motivated, but doing them because we feel we have to do them turns them into a form of work, thus sin.

You kindle many flames/fires when driving a car. You should do no work or conduct monetary commerce on the Sabbath.

In Relationship
Christian,

My initial Shabbat experiences occurred in a synagogue. We had a class and worship followed. When the service ended we had wine and challah. Some left and others remained for lunch. The community ate together and the food was provided by the family of the bar or bat mitzvah for the week. Kiddush allowed us to fellowship and meet new people. Sometimes talks or events were held in the afternoon or we headed home.

Togetherness and sharing were central themes and I employ a slower pace. Sometimes I go to the farmers market and pick up a few items while catching up with the vendors. I spend time reading, enjoying a walk, or an event in the neighborhood. I may pursue a hobby or check out recipes and interesting content from my favorite sites. Or answer a few questions on CF.

For me, Shabbat is about the heart and my connection with the Lord. It isn't regimented. Most relationships aren't. I don't have a checklist of do's and don'ts because fluidity is a necessity in my walk. That keeps me pliable and willing to shift directions when needed.

You can become wedded to a practice where the how (the process) becomes more important than why you're doing it, who you're doing it for/with, and what you're creating (naturally and spiritually).

Since the Holy Spirit didn't plant me in a corner and tell me to be still. It wouldn't matter if others did the same. He didn't instruct me to do it. That's my benchmark. Whatever the Lord desires of me will resonate in my spirit. I tune into His frequency for the answers. :)

Yours in His Service,

~Bella

Are you allowed to harvest corn or other crops according to Torah?

You say you are Eastern Orthodox. Do you follow Torah?

Commercial harvesting no. However The Torah states: “When you come into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not use a sickle on your neighbor’s standing grain” (Deuteronomy 23:25).
