28 “I solemnly declare that any sin of man can be forgiven, even blasphemy against me; 29 but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit can never be forgiven. It is an eternal sin.”

30 He told them this because they were saying he did his miracles by Satan’s power instead of acknowledging it was by the Holy Spirit’s power."

Can someone help me understand these verses? I feel like my Christian life is on hold until I do.

Thanks

this comes up rather regularly here on CF. First, if you are concerned you aren’t guilty of blasphemy against God the Holy Spirit. The blasphemy comes by witnessing the power of God and knowing it’s the the power of God yet saying it’s the by the power of the Satan and his demons. Such a statement shows that not only is such a person a liar but also already under judgement. It does not mean wanting to test the veracity of statements from a prophet or not being sure of a sign.

I hope this helps. I wouldn’t dwell on something like this.

God’s Peace

A.

This is the operative part of the sentence. To acknowledge is to affirm what you already know is true. The Greek doesn’t use the word but that is the sense given the context.

The big take away is you can’t accidentally commit the unforgivable sin or say you have and come to repentance later. If you had seen our Lord raise someone from the dead, feed the 5000 and all the miracles and know that it was the power of God yet in your pride say that it was by the power of the evil one this was done. Not just think, but know it was God.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is committed only in the context of an attitude of persistent unbelief and open hostility toward Jesus. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is not a single episode; it is a determined way of life.

When the human heart is settled in stubborn opposition to God and, thus, consciously refuses to give Jesus His due, the heart is hardened and fails to acknowledge the truth of the Holy Spirit’s testimony to God’s saving sacrifice in Jesus Christ.

This sin is beyond the possibility of forgiveness, not because God is powerless or unwilling to forgive, but because the person is not able to recognize his/her sin. Therefore, he/she does not accept forgiveness through Jesus. This attitude, of course, has eternal consequences.

Agree that someone can't accidentally commit the unpardonable sin.

God is in the heart business. Someone who asks if they have committed this sin, shows in their heart, they are concerned, attentive, care and have reverance for Him. This is opposite of someone who has committed this sin.

At the point we believed in Him, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise," Eph 1:13

My fear is that I was afraid in my early years to submit to the Lord and follow what I felt Him directing me to do with my major/career/life. I got scared in college that God might have left me. But I ran to the register and made some changes to my program. I heard Him and saw Him work in my life over my adult life. Now, at 52, I’m revisiting Hebrews chapter 10 and I got worried About verse 29. Had lived my life pretty much at ease and believing I was in God’s will - what I had overlooked is the fact that the last part of v. 29 talks about the Spirit of Grace. I’ve been heavily worried ever since that I was already in a way of life that has embraced freedom in Jesus and grace for grace to let Him keep working on me. But now I am sick with worry that I have been sinning daily by not really putting more effort myself and that I’ve done some things in life pretty regularly - for example lusting and acting out, as well as anything else that I would feel God nudging/convicting me before but not being swift to obey - and in some cases, not showing any indication that I was trying to change those behaviors myself - except where it might create a moral obstacle to ministry goals I had. In short, I’m sitting here in my living room, absolutely distraught because I also feel like I have failed to obey the Lord more swiftly - and that if I am still continuing to sin knowingly and struggling to turn immediately from sinning as the Scriptures really seem to teach and I feel I have neglected...compromised my walk with God and yet felt His love for so long but now I don’t - I feel so distant...oh Jesus help me....

Realize that sometimes we feel like our mistakes/sins are so against God how could He forgive. But to me this is saying when we are repentant, we won't be cut off from His grace and mercy. Also, "For if we searchingly examined ourselves [detecting our shortcomings and recognizing our own condition], we should not be judged and penalty decreed [by the divine judgment]." I Cor 11

Also thought of this Scripture "Now I’m over-joyed—not because I made you sad, but because your grief led you to a deep repentance. You experienced godly sorrow, and as God intended, it brought about gain for you, not loss, so that no harm has been done by us." II COR 7:9

As far as not feeling His love, some refer to these times as wilderness experiences, pruning, or valleys. It's not easy but it's one way we become overcomers (Rom 8:37). One purpose is self examination. Sometimes things will be revealed that we need to take care of such as repentance and/or forgiveness of Yahweh, others, and ourselves.. Also, it makes us rely on Yahweh more such as He is our rock (Psa 71:3) and realize more about His Word.

During these times, some Scriptures will take on deeper meaning such as I Thess 5:18 "In every thing give thanks:.." We"re acknowledging God is good no matter what is going on. These times are not easy and last for varying lengths of time. Encourage you to just continue to thank Him, hallow His name, read His Word, etc. After this period, one thing for sure the end result will be - you will be even stronger in Him because He promises, He'll draw close to you-

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." James 4
