I keep hearing the excuse that the Jews were not looking for a suffering Messiah. Yet Jesus told His disciples on numerous occasions He came to suffer, die and be resurrected on the 3rd day as a fulfillment of Scripture. Below are 20 such examples. So they must of missed it because they were acting in the flesh and seeing things from a human perspective and not Gods clear teaching in the OT.

1-Messiah would be betrayed. Psalm 41:9 Zechariah 11:12- 13 Luke 22:47-48 Matthew 26:14- 16 26
2-Messiah's price money would be used to buy a potter's field. Zechariah 11:12- 13 Matthew 27:9- 10 27
3-Messiah would be falsely accused. Psalm 35:11 Mark 14:57-58 28
4-Messiah would be silent before his accusers. Isaiah 53:7 Mark 15:4-5 29
5-Messiah would be spat upon and struck. Isaiah 50:6 Matthew 26:67 30
6-Messiah would be hated without cause. Psalm 35:19 Psalm 69:4 John 15:24-25
7-Messiah would be crucified with criminals. Isaiah 53:12 Matthew 27:38 Mark 15:27-28 32 8-Messiah would be given vinegar to drink. Psalm 69:21 Matthew 27:34 John 19:28-30 33 9-Messiah's hands and feet would be pierced. Psalm 22:16 Zechariah 12:10 John 20:25-27
10-Messiah would be mocked and ridiculed. Psalm 22:7-8 Luke 23:35 35
11-Soldiers would gamble for Messiah's garments. Psalm 22:18 Luke 23:34 Matthew 27:35- 36
12-Messiah's bones would not be broken. Exodus 12:46 Psalm 34:20 John 19:33-36 37
13-Messiah would be forsaken by God. Psalm 22:1 Matthew 27:46 38
14-Messiah would pray for his enemies. Psalm 109:4 Luke 23:34 39
15-Soldiers would pierce Messiah's side. Zechariah 12:10 John 19:34 40
16-Messiah would be buried with the rich. Isaiah 53:9 Matthew 27:57- 60 41
17-Messiah would resurrect from the dead. Psalm 16:10 Psalm 49:15 Matthew 28:2-7 Acts 2:22-32 42
18-Messiah would ascend to heaven. Psalm 24:7-10 Mark 16:19 Luke 24:51 43
19-Messiah would be seated at God's right hand. Psalm 68:18 Psalm 110:1 Mark 16:19 Matthew 22:44 44
20-Messiah would be a sacrifice for sin. Isaiah 53:5-12 Romans 5:6-8

hope this helps !!!

Hi you, @Jesus is YHWH, there is something that you might find interesting if you go and read Luke 24:13-34.

It was the third day after Jesus burial, and you can see Luke, maybe Peter, either way it was two disciples of Jesus, who were walking away going to Emmaus, which was 7 miles away from Jerusalem. Talking between each other what happened, and they seemed down or sad because it was the third day and Jesus had not returned.

I'm talking about people today claiming the Jews in Jesus day had no idea the Messiah would suffer and die for sin.
Because of the Roman occupation and oppression, their desire was for a deliver/king. Their own personal expectations blinded them to the Truth that you cite in the OP. Christians sometimes make the same mistake. Allowing their own desires to supplant sound doctrine.
John 6:15. Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

Minister is right. Something I would like to share to with you all again is. The scripture found in Matthew 21:42-46 (really the whole chapter.) What Yeshua, is speaking to the scribes and Pharisees is profound. It always seems as though Yeshua is always reminding even his disciples, have you not read the scriptures (the Old Testament would been all they had to go on)? Then expounds on them after.

I don't think the disciples could connect the dots either. But it should be a no brainer for us looking back.

If we are talking about Scripture brain power, Jesus chose more working class people-not PHDs. ;) Paul and Luke were probably the "big dogs", and that was later.

26Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” d

It's really a whole lot more simple than you make it out to be.

God Blinded and Deafened the Jews to just who Jesus was.

The Purpose of the Parables
Mat 13:10,11
10) And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
11) He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Mat 13:13,14
13) Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14) And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15) For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Isa 6:9-11
9) And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10) Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
11) Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,

Mat 23:37-39
37) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38) Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39) For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Luk 11:50,51
50) That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
51) From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.

There is lots of Old Testament scripture support for the idea the Messiah was going to be the Jewish King in Jerusalem, so they can say: "I here what you are saying but this other scripture says______. Do we not do the same thing today? Do we tend to ignore scripture that does not support our conclusions?

I have read that the OT testament prophecies about Christ were seen as two possible ways how it could happen -

a) a victorious king over all nations who will literally recover the throne of David
b) a suffering Messiah, for the sins of people.

In the time period when Jesus was born, Jews massively adopted the first, literal intepretation of Messiah as a king who will free Israel and will rule over nations. Certainly mainly because of their oppression under Romans.

Jesus then explained to his disciples that the second one was literal (that He must suffer) and the first one was spiritual, not physical.

I was hoping someone would catch that. Also, not all were blinded. Zacharias, Simeon, Anna, the Wise men, these all knew Jesus when He came, and also the life HE would endure as Prophesied in the Holy Scriptures.

Good catch :)

I don't think the disciples could connect the dots either. But it should be a no brainer for us looking back.
But eventually they did - or else we wouldn't have our faith.

Acts 1:6-8 ~
So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 10:39-43 ~ And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross,c but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear, not to the general public,d but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead. He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.”

Many passages have Jesus criticizing the disciples for their lack of faith. They were normal people. None were scholars I think.

It depends on what's considered a "scholar" in Jesus's day.

Jesus began His ministry in Galilee....and according to historians....that is where the most educated students of the Torah were:

"That the World May Know | Rabbi and Talmidim" Rabbi and Talmidim

I was thinking of the disciples, and not the entire population. At least seven of the disciples were fishermen. Matthew belonged to the class of Jewish tax collectors (mokhsa) who extorted money from travelers. Simon the Canaanite, earned the title of zealot. His fierce loyalty to his faith and Israel was evident. The zealots were a religious sect, zelotes, from the Greek ‘zealous one.’ Zealots would attempt to arouse rebellion among the Jews. In all likelihood Philip, James (the son of Alphaeus), and Judas (Thaddaeus) were tradesmen of some sort.

I was referring to the disciples as well. Just because they were fisherman or practiced a trade for a living doesn't mean they hadn't been students of the Torah from a young age (most likely, they were). That link i shared describes the unique background of Galilee in Jesus' and the disciple's day. Not only is it believed that the disciples were well educated in the Torah....it's also believed that they also were literate and spoke Greek as well as Aramaic.
