Some people think there's no reason to vote because only electoral votes count.

The founding fathers established the Electoral College as a compromise between election of the President by Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens. The U.S. Constitution states in Amendment XII, ratified by the states in 1804:

“The person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed ….

"...on Election Day, the voters in each state select their state’s Electors by casting their ballots for President. Most voters don’t know it, but when they cast votes for the Presidential candidate of their choice they are actually voting to select their state’s Electors.

"In all states except in Nebraska and Maine, the winning Presidential candidate’s slate of potential Electors are then appointed as the state’s Electors.

"For example, if Donald Trump won the popular vote in Alaska, his slate of potential Electors are appointed as Alaska’s Electors. Those Electors would then cast their votes for Trump as President.

"In Nebraska and Maine, the state winner receives two Electors and the winner of each congressional district (who may be the same as the overall winner or a different candidate) receives one Elector. This system permits the Electors from Nebraska and Maine to be awarded to more than one candidate.

I am a Canadian of 77 years. I have never not voted in any election for which I was eligible. In several elections I did not like any of the candidates so I officially declined my ballot. I do not know if this is possible in the USA.

Your vote absolutely counts. If no one voted, the electors wouldn't be able to vote.

Trump 2020

If someone does not vote then in my books they lose the right to complain about their government in the future. Maybe that should be a law.

I'm voting for Trump because I want to keep America great. Trump should be given gene therapy to make him live forever, then remain president for all times. With our great leader at the helm of our nation, nothing can go wrong.

I disagree. If everyone who were eligible to vote were required to vote, I believe that would benefit the Democrats because a lot of would-be Democratic voters stay home relative to Republican voters. It isn't good for America to have an indefinite number of Democratic presidents, otherwise our country would descend into socialism.

Technically everybody's vote counts, but in many states the partisan mix is so one sided that everybody knows what direction the electoral college is going to vote. If you don't live in a swing state, your vote has a minimal effort. And of course if you don't live in a swing state, you get much less attention from the campaigns.

That would be a stupid law. Government has no business making a law like that.

Well, I like the precedent Washington set up. Two terms. I am voting for Trump too, but give any man power for too long, it will probably corrupt him.

That's true but in the case of Donald Trump he was already corrupt when he took office.

I have four children. I doubt that any of them will vote Republican. Two are atheists, one is independent, the other gets annoyed if I mention anything in the news and also says our votes don't count in Presidential elections. I disagree that our votes have no bearing on the election(I read the article).

Did any of you read it? Is my assessment wrong?

While I didn't read the article (I will at some point), your assessment is correct. Your vote does count.

It's good that you're voting for Trump, but why do you feel the need to sling mud on him and allege he would slide into corruption if given the opportunity to be president for more than two terms? Unlike most politicians out there today, Trump is one of the few statesmen who has integrity and genuinely wants to help America and improve the lives of ordinary Americans. In short, his motto is, "Make America Great Again!" He will never deviate from such a profound principle, no matter how long he serves as president, even if he could live forever and serve for 1,000 years.

The main reason why Hillary lost the election is because people in the urban areas of the states Trump won, didn't bother to vote. Obama carried those urban areas twice, but they didn't bother to vote in the 2016 election, and Hillary lost. Thank God BTW.

The point I'm making is, your vote does count.

Stateman??? Seriously??? Integrity??? Seriously??? He panders to dictators both large and small --- Putin, Un Bolsonaro and Dueterte. He alienates his closest allies and insults entire nations. All this "diplomacy" has not improved the state of the world one iota and has actually seriously degraded the international reputation of the USA. His trade wars have seriously hurt many sectors of the American economy. His tax policies favour the rich over the poor. He is an absolute disaster. I am not going to touch on his personality or morality or his ethics.

Yes your vote does count, if you live in a swing state. The majority of American citizens don't.
