A Fight Over 500 Square Miles Could Have Handed The Upper Peninsula To Wisconsin. Does That Matter?

Michiganders likely weren’t too happy when the Wisconsin Badgers beat several of its football teams last year; its Upper Peninsula, however, took it in stride — at least it’s unofficial Twitter account did.

"It’s official, I belong to Wisconsin now," the Tweet read, after rattling off the scores. The account even changed its name to the "Upper Peninsula of Wisconsin."

Intriguing, and perhaps the tip of an iceberg of discontent between the UP and its mitten counterpart. The Twitter account has since changed its description a number of times, from the "Upper Peninsula of ‍♀️" to the "Upper Peninsula of America."

What’s the deal? Geographically, the UP is only connected to the Lower Peninsula by a bridge. With Wisconsin, it shares more than 200 miles of border.

So why isn’t the UP part of Wisconsin?

It's a question on many people's minds. It's also WHYsconsin’s most-asked question.

But this isn’t a story about a bloody battle where Michigan reigned supreme. Digging into the technicalities of how this chunk of land joined Michigan rather than Wisconsin shows the former state’s claim over it had more to do with timing than anything else. The bigger question might be whether the UP and Wisconsin should have been joined. And does a state’s identity rely on its physical connection?

Even more odd is why Isle Royal is part of Michigan instead of part of Minnesota. Go figure.

I'm from The lower Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (UP) is a strange place, with many strange people, very nice people, but still strange. As far as how the UP ended up as part of Michigan (MI) I have no idea, but I do know they tried to become the 51st State, but the referendum failed. the UP represent 3% of MI population, unemployment, even when times are good is always above the state average, and probably 25% of residents receive public assistance. I don't have numbers, but there seems to me a disproportionate number of single mothers, though not as prevalent as say Louisiana. or LA (lower Alabama)

If you look at night time satellite photos of the Earth, in the Northern Hemisphere only the UP and North Korea are dark (besides Siberia)

I can't imagine Wisconsin wanting to take over all the problems associated with the UP. As far as the residents are concerned, if they can get something for FREE from Wisconsin, I don't think they would really care.

The article mentioned naming the state, "Superior." :D

We've got a bit of a bunfight in Australia at the moment about the border between New South Wales and Queensland.

Due to the fact NSW has had some Covid-19 outbreaks (although Qld has had some isolated cases), the border is subject to stringent control at the moment. The trouble is that the Gold Coast on the southern end of Queensland butts up against Tweed Heads in the northern part of New South Wales, both of which have a high population density.

Since a lot of residents in Tweed Heads work in Queensland, and vice versa for the Gold Coast, it would be a lot easier to police if the border moved 7kms south to the river itself, meaning only a bridge or two would have to be policed, and the residents of Tweed Heads would then be in Queensland already.

I can't see it happening though, even if it makes logical sense. Once again the cause of the issue was due to a historical difference of opinion when both the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads were just backwater beach communities.

Why moving Queensland's border further south might make sense
