I don't want to come off here as someone who romanticizes the Byzantine Empire, Tsarist Russia, etc. So please read with understanding.

In my mind I imagine that it was much easier to "fit in" and retain a certain amount of patriotism (if you can think of a better phrase please provide it) in Orthodox monarchies.

The United States has long embraced the "melting pot" label with pride. As such most people have at least partially found themselves expressing their political thoughts through one side or the other. They feel that they can reconcile their religion with the positions of society.

Since I've become Orthodox I often feel sickened when I try to "choose sides". The entire system seems irrelevant to my faith. Matter of fact I often have to slow down my fervor for faith when I try to take sides. Have we really got to the place to where we are confirmed pilgrims and strangers here? Is patriotism impossible?

Haven’t watched this yet, however, this question prompted me to start it:

I don’t have any answers (as I sempathize with this ideal). However, maybe this video has some.
I haven't watched it either. I'll do so tonight

Coptics and Palestinians Christians are Patriotic even when their regions are not friendly to Christians.
