The notion that science has determined that masks are going to save us from Chinese Coronavirus (or any other disease) is utter tosh. Anyone telling you science is settled on any issue should raise a red flag. On masks, science isn't close to settled.

The British Journal of Medicine says cloth masks are 97% useless. https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577.long

A study of the more serious 1918 flu pandemic showed masks useless. The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) from the American Public Health Association (APHA) publications

Another study shows cloth masks useless compared to surgical masks. https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577.long

Other studies show cloth masks useless compared to surgical masks, even the latter are questionable. They include:
https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/bio/23/2/23_61/_pdf/-char/en

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi...-su9_me9_vY6a8KVR4HZ17J2A_80f_fXUABRQdhQlc8Wo
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2493952/pdf/annrcse01509-0009.pdf

https://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/0195-6701(91)90148-2/pdf

https://academic.oup.com/annweh/article/54/7/789/202744

Masks are associated with oxygen deprivation and increased rates of infection according to these studies:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29395560/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32590322/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30169507/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15340662/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26579222/

A 2015 British study on surgical masks revealed masks don't really protect patient or surgeon very much. And that's in sterile settings. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ar...-KkzpdkmzltnAf-GXp7gMeQkkyeZJ6gEs7G5h8PHln_R0

Finally, one New England Journal of Medicine editorial acknowledged the uselessness of masks but demanded universal masking nonetheless less for its placebo effect. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2006372

There is plenty of evidence out there that masks and mask mandates aren't working and in fact are causing harm. They're a placebo to make you think you're protected and to make politicians look like they're doing something when they're in reality doing nothing.

Do your own research.

And it says:

Conclusions This study is the first RCT of cloth masks, and the results caution against the use of cloth masks. This is an important finding to inform occupational health and safety. Moisture retention, reuse of cloth masks and poor filtration may result in increased risk of infection. Further research is needed to inform the widespread use of cloth masks globally. However, as a precautionary measure, cloth masks should not be recommended for [Health Care Workers], particularly in high-risk situations, and guidelines need to be updated.

Which is what we all knew already. If you want to feel truly safe, then wear N95 masks. Nobody is stopping you.

Then too... the point of that study is safety to the person wearing the mask. Which isn't at all the point of the mask mandates. The point there is the mask I wear helps prevent me from infecting others by containing moisture droplets I exhale. And of course, it doesn't catch all of them, just like covering your mouth with your hand when you sneeze doesn't catch all of them either. But we all know that is a helpful thing, and I request that you please cover your mouth when you sneeze in the same room with me. And also, as long as we have a Covid risk, wear a mask for me. I don't care if it's N95. Just wear something. Thanks.

That depends very much on what kind of mask it is; and "moisture droplets" exhaled by others are not a major disease risk.

I can't say I know what the truth is about all this but one thing I do know. When I wear a mask in a store even for a few minutes I start to feel almost dizzy. I know medical people wear them nearly all day long.....I'm just saying how I feel and it's not just psychological.

N95's are fools gold. They have to be fitted properly to provide any sort of protection. Error - Cookies Turned Off

Because lay people don't have N95's properly fitted and generally don't wear them right, their effect is marginal to useless. Proficiency of N95 Mask Donning Among the General Public in Singapore

"Respirator masks protect health but impact performance: a review" (Feb. 9, 2016)

Respirator masks protect health but impact performance: a review

There are two basic principles relevant to respirator use:

  1. 1.
Work cannot usually be performed as long or as hard while wearing a respirator compared to when respirators are not worn. Wearing protective clothing plus respirators makes this situation even worse. Either more time must be allowed for a particular task or more workers must be assigned to the same task.

  2. 2.
There is a great deal of wearer variability. Some wearers can tolerate respirator high inspiratory or expiratory resistance or pressure levels, while others cannot. Some wearers are much more anxious about wearing respirators than others. Some wearers can tolerate hot, humid conditions inside respirators, whereas others cannot. Because of this variability, each wearer must be treated as an individual.

In fact, moisture droplets are the major disease risk of Coronavirus.

"Coronavirus spreads through droplets that an infected person emits through coughs or sneezes and through smaller, infectious viral particles that can drift around in the air for several hours."

Must people be racist and call it that?
That isn't racist, we've been calling diseases from their orgins for decades. Spanish flu, German measels, West Nile virus, Ebola, Sars etc.

Then I would advise you to stay at home. But if you go out in public near me, please wear a mask.
The mask is a placebo. If you're uncomfortable around the unmasked why don't you stay home?

The way people say the china virus, it is indeed racist. The way Trump says it is racist.

Maybe we should stop calling them by their country of origin as to me it's just racist. Call it by it's actual name. I have never gone around calling the measles German measles, just measles to me.

Is putting on a mask really that much trouble?

I have asthma, and wear a mask when and where I must. As an EMT I am having to sometimes wear two masks and a face shield around Covid positive patients. Is it a little hard to breathe for me? Yep! Does it cause more asthma attacks? Yep! However, I know it is there to protect others from me and sometimes in the case of wearing full PPE, me from others.

German measels aren't the measels people typically think of. It's also called rubella.

I'm not buying the racist argument. The virus originated in China, it's no different than a dozen other diseases that have been identified by their original place of discovery. This isn't something old done centuries ago, Ebola, Sars and West Nile virus are relatively new. There isn't a racist hiding in every refrigerator.

Study after study says the mask isn't protecting you or anyone else. Especially in non-sterile environments.

Are you now saying exposure to Coronavirus isn't a threat?

Because if Coronavirus is a threat, then you are a threat to me if we meet in public. I'm asking you to wear a mask to mitigate that threat to me, even if you think it doesn't work. YOU might not think it has any effect, but the CDC says it does, and that's why many states are now mandating it.

Well we all KNOW people won't be treated like an individual in stores etc. If you don't wear a mask you don't get in or if you do get in everybody is looking at you like you're scum. Some would rather die.
