• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Lately I’ve been having these thoughts and feelings of whether or not I do want a relationship with God, and often times it feels more like I wouldn’t, and my heart drops. I don’t want to lose that desire, and it frightens me. Prayers would be greatly appreciated, as would advice. Thanks!

That is understandable. C. S. Lewes wrote about the isolation in every area of life.
We have favourite foods, TV programs, activities and then they are no longer the favourite.

It is the same spiritual, our love for God runs hot, then cools through warm, lukewarm even down to cold and cycles back up to hot again.

You have to grit your teeth and maintain your habits of daily Bible reading, prayers etc etc.

That's the foreign spirit of your ocd thinking intrusive thoughts. Don't run with it. The real desire is that one in your heart not your brain. Inside, in your heart, you don't want to walk from God but with Him, you just said so in your opening statement !! Praise God and thank you Jesus. Amen

Yes, pray.

Trust Him to do what He wants with you, now.

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15)

So, this is what God desires . . . to personally share with us in His own peace which is God's own harmony ruling us with how He is ruled . . . such sharing. And this is a Christian basic, not a theoretical matter for discussion about if God desires this,

or if we deserve this > every one of us has been so wrong and undeserving.

Therefore, this is not an option or some specialization of only certain super-spiritual people or ones with special status.

But being personally ruled in our Heavenly Father's own peace is a basic for all of us "called in one body".

So, we do this together . . . not each one in some sort of isolated choice making. So, may be you are too isolated. Get more into sharing with other children of God, to help one another walk in the personal ruling of God's own peace in our hearts. Our Heavenly Father is about family sharing and caring; so this peace is in family caring and sharing, meaning of course this includes being able to forgive lovingly and generously and always being ready with "longsuffering" (Ephesians 4:2) so we are strong for keeping hope alive for one another > love "hopes all things" (in 1 Corinthians 13:7).

Notice how I am giving God's word for helping us to find out how to be submissive to God and how to relate and share and care with one another. God's word is ready for you :)

Any scripture can somehow be used by God to bring you this way.

But I think I have seen how people can get stuck in using God's word to only or mainly point out what is wrong, but they do not feed on scripture which brings us into intimate and family sharing tenderly with God and with one another. We have confrontation of things wrong, but with God's confrontation is such great encouragement about how He pleases the transform us to how Jesus is and loves while so pleasing to our Father . . . meaning how grace works all this better than our human wills and self-produced effort can.

"Therefore submit to God." (in James 4:7)

If you delight in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart...

Just be honest with Him - tell Him your desire is waining, and ask for fresh desire.

It is His will for you to have this, so your prayer will be answered.

Would you care to share exactly why you're tempted to feel you don't want a relationship with God? Sometimes a thought like that can be based on a misunderstanding of just what the character and nature of God is like.

I’ve had the wrong perception of God for a long time; the one that paints Him as the angry judge. I don’t like having it and I want it to change. That being said, I don’t know why these feelings of not wanting God have come up, and I am confused.

Seek the Lord more, draw nigh to Him and He will draw nigh to you:
- Confess your sins and get rid of any habitual sins
- Pray
- Pray in tongues if you can
- Read or listen to the Word (I personally prefer audio bibles, I'm more of an audiovisual type)
- Meditate on the Word
- Worship
- Listen to worship music
- Go to church and fellowship

Are you already doing some of these?

I’m guilty of reading and not meditating. I also think that the gift of tongues is something that you can’t get from reading a book or watching somebody on television, and I certainly don’t believe you can’t purchase it, otherwise it wouldn’t be a gift. I do all of those other things, but I don’t think I worship in spirit and in truth, as much as I desire to.

Maybe think of it more as wanting to give up on the old viewpoint of the "angry judge," not God Himself. It's exhausting and unmotivating to live in that state, I know. Pray that He reveals his gentle, Father's heart to you.

Actually, it's common with OCD to worry about how we feel about things like that, but the truth is, it really doesn't matter that much. I agree with Tolworth John - we all have seasons in life, including in our spiritual walks, and our job is to just keep moving forward, without worrying that our lack of desire means something awful about ourselves or our relationship with God. OCD likes to get us hung up on worrying that our lack of feelings meanings that we don't have salvation or something, but that's not true at all!

Hey at @TenthAveN please reply as soon as you see this. I’m experiencing the exact same things you’re going through.
Yeah, I’ve been experiencing great apathy in regards to wanting to know God. I’m not entirely sure what I can attribute it to

I think sometimes OCD perpetuates this apathy. We want so badly to feel the right feelings in order to prove something to ourselves - that we're saved, that we have a true relationship with God, etc. But the more we strive to have the "right" feelings, the more they elude us. That's kind of how OCD works. So the goal is to learn to treat the OCD. As we do that, usually our feelings bounce back to normal. It's a process, and doesn't usually happen all at once, but as we treat the OCD, we do improve!

It’s hard to choose to believe in God’s grace when you’re questioning whether you want it.
