As US coronavirus cases surpass 4 million, medical experts urge to shut down and start over

Those of us who had the foresight to know this and abided by the rules are now going to have to deal with the consequences of the actions of those who were irresponsible and did not cooperate. Because of their irresponsibility, most of the sacrifices made by our society in general have been undone and we are back at square one.

It's hard for me to imagine that so many American adults can take on the attitude of an insolent, spoiled, bratty child when it comes to a health crisis, an actual pandemic, and put everyone's lives in jeopardy over their selfish wants.

And I don't believe any of them ever truly cared about the economy despite using that as the biggest excuse for wanting to go against the health safety measures being taken. Those of us who truly care about the economy understand that we need to take care of the health crisis in order for the economy to come back in a truly healthy (fiscally) way.

It's like that person at work who for whatever selfish reason decides to not call out sick when they are sick, but instead goes into the office, infects other people, doesn't get the rest they need, doesn't do their job well because they're sick, and then after 2 or 3 days of that ends up calling out sick for several days because their illness got worse from not taking care of themselves. Better off calling out sick for a day or two, resting and recovering, taking care of the body, then come back in when actually healthy. But for some reason, people do the foolish thing and exacerbate the problem.

You see it in pro sports too, for those who are fans - one of your team's best players gets hurt and some teams rush them back before they're fully healed, and then they get hurt again, this time out for even longer. If they should be out for 4 weeks, let them stay out 4 weeks or even 5 to fully heal, so that when they come back you won't lose them again. But they rush someone like that back in 2 or 3 weeks and without fail the person gets hurt their first few games back in, and THIS time they're out for 8 weeks or 12 weeks or even need surgery. Foolish!!!

Now we must deal with the foolishness of the selfish among our society. We need stricter laws and enforcement across the whole nation. Start fining people and lock them up if we have to. Most importantly, start pulling liquor and food licenses as NJ and NY have finally started doing, and pull whatever other businesses' licenses if they are breaking the rules/laws.

We could have been on pace with Europe, instead we are back to what the situation was in March for the hotspot states at that time. Difference is that the hotspot states at that time were blindsided and had to figure out their own guidance whereas the hotspot states now are in that position out of foolishness, mostly directly due to arrogance and spoiled behavior.

Stricter law enforcement? And here I thought Democrats were opposed to that (see Portland).

Doing a shut down makes sense. But when has American as a whole do what makes sense?

We voted William Hung as the winner of American Idol, thus exposing the farce that the "contest" was based on.

In the exact same vein, we also need to ban all public demonstrations. Lock up and fine anyone who is not out on a vital WORK related task that has been government approved as "necessary" or "critical". Protests of any type can no longer be permitted. Either we ban all gatherings, or it's merely a pointless play-pretend exercise.

If you shut the country down again....it's game over.

...but that is the plan..right?

It's only "game over" for the short-sighted, the weak-willed, and the foolish.

Oh, wait. America would be SO SCREWED.

It is a strength and weakness of the country. There are times when being short-sighted but stubborn got us through things, but right now we really need to look at the big picture and long term.

And most American's don't think the virus is a threat because it is not in their face. I have seen too many stories of people who have ignored the threat and then got sick. And when they tried to tell others they are ignored.

It is a pattern I saw from anti-vaxers, and I don't think it will change any time soon. I am just thankful that we have more knowledge about viruses that most have been pro-active before it hit us like the 1918 flu.

It doesn't have to be game over. People could prepare, the government could work to help people through a two week period through money and food.

The problem is that as a country we have gotten soft. We have forgotten what sacrifice for others means and that the need for that did not go away after the sacrifices of past generations.

Quit your belly aching. It’s hard to find anyone without a mask out in public now but yet the numbers continue to supposedly rise. Panicking and fear is exactly what they want

Honestly I think this was unavoidable regardless of actions taken. People are going to have buy groceries and gas and the grocery stores and gas stations are probably the among most dangerous places we can go. The last shutdown didn’t accomplish anything when we had less than 100,000 reported cases. How is it expected to do any better with over 4 million reported cases now?

Can’t believe you can’t see through this sham

Who are "they"? What planet are "they" from? Are they from Hollow Earth or the Dark Side of the Moon?

You’ll believe anything these wicked governments will tell you because being simple minded is a trait of the weak. You divert through name calling because you are to naive to see through the deception. There’s something bigger in play which you fail to see

It seems as if states like California are doing selective shut downs because the virus has gotten out of hand.

I don't see why anyone is surprised that the economy will never recover completely until people can move about in safety. I know that since the pandemic my shopping and entertainment expenses are vastly lower. I order groceries by pickup or Instacart delivery. If it's something that I can't get at a grocery store I shop online--but haven't done very much of it. Today, for example, I bought a box of replacement Pur Water Filters at Amazon, because the idea of going into Wal-Mart was not an option.

The stock market doesn't reflect the true experience of most Americans. The president thinks he can bully the unemployed back to work by removing benefits--but some jobs aren't there because he and many governors have ignored health and safety precautions. He thinks he can bully the schools into fully reopening by threatening to withhold aid and forcing their parents back to work--but if it works until November 3 he won't care if a million people die November 4--as long as the markets are high.
