Yes the way you use language indicates your position.

You interchangeably use the words - "Word of God" and the Bible.

You make no distinction between the Living Word of God and the Scripture, yet we are told plainly that knowledge of the Scripture does not always lead to knowledge of God.

Without new words from God guiding me specifically every day regarding how to act I would be toast in no time.

This matter is of grave concern to me as is shuts down His work among us.

It is this refusal to allow for His Spirit to be speaking afresh to us that extends to insisting that He must not be operating prophetic gifts in this age.

So this is the real question we should be asking that answers the OP of this thread.

Is His Spirit active within us to speak as we walk daily with Him - or did this cease when the bible was written?

Should we expect a fresh Word from God revealed within by His living presence that guides us through our daily challenges, or was this revelation closed when the bible was written?

And support your answer from scripture.

I think some of us have so elevated scripture so much as to eclipse the dynamic and personal conversation with us that He intended.

Obviously the “Living Word” is spirit (i.e. second person of the Godhead or the Trinity) who was made flesh, and the “Communicated Word of God” we have today (i.e. the Holy Bible) is the expressed thoughts of God placed in written form. But there is a symbiotic relationship between the Living Word and the Communicated Word. I will refresh your memory again on this point, my friend.

The Symbiotic Relationship Between
The Living Word, & the Communicated Word:


  1. Christ is good (John 10:11, John 10:14), and the word is good (1 Kings 2:42).

  2. Christ is the truth (John 14:6), and the word is the truth (John 17:17).

The communicated word of God that we have today is the Bible.

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11).​

Jesus (the Living Word) was sent by the commandment (mouth) of the Father. Jesus said and did everything the Father told Him to do (John 12:49) (John 14:31).

What is interesting is that the Living Word accomplished that which the Father commanded Him to do and to prosper (accomplish) that thing He sent to do (i.e. Jesus suffered on the cross, and said, “It is finished” and died for man’s sins). Jesus was risen three days later, and ascended to the Father. God’s Word (the living Word) did not return void by whom the Father sent.

The communicated Word can also be sent out and not return void, as well. For many have believed and have stayed faithful to what God’s Word says.

In the creation: The Word made flesh (John 1:1, John 1:14) (i.e. Christ) created everything. In the beginning God spoke words to bring forth the creation in six days (Genesis 1:1-31).

So in the beginning was the Living Word, and the communicated Word.

In the end of this sinful world: Christ will return (Revelation 19:11-21) and a sharp sword will proceed from His mouth. This sword could be the “sword of the Spirit,” (Which is the Word of God) or it could be symbolic of such (Ephesians 6:17).

So in the end there will be the Living Word, and the communicated Word.

For at Christ’s return: His name is called The “Word of God.” (Revelation 19:13) (Living Word).

On His thigh, and vesture is a name written (words) “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” (Communicated Word).

Jesus was beaten to a pulp and crucified on a tree.

The Word we have today (the Bible) is a result of pulp made from a tree.

Jesus was the Word made flesh (covered in skin).

The Word we have today (the Bible) is popular to be available covered in skin (leather).

Words on the page hang on this tree (paper) (the Bible),
just like the Living Word hung on a tree (the cross).

The sign gifts, tongues, prophecy, the gift of healing, etc. were operating all through the Book of Acts, and these gifts are mentioned in the letters that Paul wrote during the Acts period. But when we turn to the letters written after the Book of Acts—the 4 Prison Epistles, and the 3 Pastoral Epistles, we find that the sign gifts either aren’t mentioned at all or we see—as with the gift of healing—that they were no longer operating in Paul’s life. What he could do in Acts 28, he could no longer do in Philippians, or in 1 and 2 Timothy. He could heal all the sick on the island in Acts 28:9, but he couldn’t heal any of his closest co-workers—Timothy, Epaphroditus, Trophimus—after the close of the Book of Acts.

When Did the Gift of Tongues Cease?

Generally Cessationists believe that the miraculous gifting of the Spirit (not miracles in general done by God) had ended with the close of the creation of the book of Revelation in 96AD. The sign gifts would have been in operation to warn the Jew of the coming judgment upon their temple in 70AD.

I hope now readers like radagast and yourself understand better my point: Belief in Mid Acts dispy generally leans one towards cessationalism.

I was not aware of this.
I am strongly against Mid Acts Dispensationalism (MAD).

However, I have quoted from Christian authors before when I do not exactly agree with their view of Soteriology before. This does not mean that these kinds of authors do not have any other valid things to say or that they cannot be correct on other truths or doctrines from the Scriptures (even when they might be in error in another way).

I usually try to remember to add a “side note” alongside the link source saying I do not agree with the article and may not agree with the author's other views and or beliefs.

If it was right for Thomas to be supplied with hard evidence before he would believe, then why can't we? It doesn't have to come from the lips of Jesus.

In an age when everyone has a video camera on their phone is it too much to ask for evidence of miracles happening in front of the camera; dead people in their coffins being raised to life; or fluent foreign tongues speaking on camera from someone verified not to know the language. All the videos of miracles I have seen from Charismatic sources so far have been obvious fakes.

If anecdotal evidence (aka hearsay) is inadmissible in a court of law, why should we have to accept it?

Good point. If around the end of last year, Bethel did managed to perform the sign of resurrecting that little girl who died suddenly, even if the mainstream media refuse to cover it, I would expect the social media to be on fire with all kinds of videos.

I am strongly against Mid Acts Dispensationalism (MAD).

I seen a lot of Reformed defend Cessationism. As far as I know, Calvinists do not believe in MAD. Yet, I am also not a Calvinist. I merely believe in Cessationism based on the Scriptural support for it. It's that simple. I was not influenced to believe in it because I am reformed or MAD. It was purely based on what the Bible says.

If there is anyone out there that is easy to expose for wrong teachings, it is that guy.

Bethel church is definitely a church that believes that signs and wonders are still for the church today. It is mentioned by Bill Johnson himself.

If you read carefully the lyrics for their songs, which are very popular among Charismatic churches, many of them have lyrics that reinforced that doctrine.

Both sides accept Mark 16:16-18 in what it says, but the difference is that these two groups think that these verses are applied differently for the believer today. They believe that there was a time that these things did apply.

I believe water baptism is an OT covenant ritual that was eventually phased out in the early church. I believe verse 16 is in reference to Spirit baptism and not water baptism. I believe Spirit baptism today is simply the change of heart and the receiving of the Spirit. Pentecost and after: In the early church, certain select individuals would speak in tongues to show the change in God's new program.

As for some of the sign gifts mentioned in verses 17-18 like speaking in tongues, I believe this was temporary. Again, this was to confirm God's Word and the followers of Christ as being true men of God.

I am non-denominational. I just believe the Bible and I strive not to adhere to any one group in what they believe but I strive to simply believe plainly what the Bible teaches. This does not always make me friends with many.

Before you appeared to be boasting in Bill Johnson doing a miracle. My response was not doubting whether or not he was a Continuationist, but I was doubting his authenticity in working miracles. No offense, but I honestly don't think he is genuine. A simple Google search on his false beliefs should be reason enough. But of course there is more.

In the creation: The Word made flesh (John 1:1, John 1:14) (i.e. Christ) created everything. In the beginning God spoke words to bring forth the creation in six days (Genesis 1:1-31).

So in the beginning was the Living Word, and the communicated Word.

In the end of this sinful world: Christ will return (Revelation 19:11-21) and a sharp sword will proceed from His mouth. This sword could be the “sword of the Spirit,” (Which is the Word of God) or it could be symbolic of such (Ephesians 6:17).

So in the end there will be the Living Word, and the communicated Word.

For at Christ’s return: His name is called The “Word of God.” (Revelation 19:13) (Living Word).

On His thigh, and vesture is a name written (words) “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” (Communicated Word).

Jesus was beaten to a pulp and crucified on a tree.

The Word we have today (the Bible) is a result of pulp made from a tree.

Jesus was the Word made flesh (covered in skin).

The Word we have today (the Bible) is popular to be available covered in skin (leather).

Words on the page hang on this tree (paper) (the Bible),
just like the Living Word hung on a tree (the cross).

I don't believe your cut and paste has addressed the issue I raised at all...

Well, the cut and paste job was a list that was a work that was built upon what another started. Half of the list is my own original work. But I did reword what another said in their original list (so as not to directly copy what they wrote). When I started to add to the list: God just kept showing me more and more.

Generally, most evangelicals, meaning Anglicans, Methodists, Presbyterians etc all are for cessationalism.

Only Charismatics lean towards continualism.

I don't think this is correct - example the current Archbishop of Canterbury exercises the gift of tongues.

The evangelicals embraced the move of the Spirit in the 70's before the Roman Catholics eventually did.
