Psalm 29:1 & 2. (JPS)
Ascribe unto the LORD, O ye sons of might,
Ascribe unto the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe unto the LORD the glory due unto His name;
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
We find here a word ‘yahab’ that is often translated simply as ‘Give’,
meaning contribute. Since we cannot give The Creator anything,
we find the more unique and infrequently used Ascribe. We find this
in one other verse, from the final song of Moses.
Deuteronomy 32:3. For I proclaim the name of the Lord:
Ascribe greatness to our God.
A more common word translated ‘give’ hundreds of times is ‘nathan’.
However, twice we find that we are ‘giving’ to The Creator, and again
‘ascribe’ is used.
Job 36:3. I will fetch my knowledge from afar;
I will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
Psalm 68:34. Ascribe strength to God;
His excellence is over Israel,
And His strength is in the clouds.
Ascribe unto the LORD, O ye sons of might,
Ascribe unto the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe unto the LORD the glory due unto His name;
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
