Several of my family members are experiencing a rather nasty cold as we speak. Whenever I'm suggesting that they should get tested for Covid-19 they just trivialize it saying its the rhinovirus.

They keep on going to the mall and they're acting as if its not to big of a deal. The "what if thoughts" has struck me in the last couple of days. What if its actually the coronavirus after all? We could potentially be super-spreading a potentially deadly disease. Its a rather chilling thought to entertain to be honest!

How should i approach this with my family? As things are right now inflections are fairly low where I'm at. This makes it highly unlikely that any of us actually have the virus, but who knows right?

It sometimes feels as if I'm the only one to take this pandemic seriously. What do you guys think I should do and how should I go about this?

(So far I'm well btw)

It's actually not cool to spread influenza, rhinoviruses, common colds, or herpes. Your relatives are not acting cool.

I would have thought that they would've had tests just to put their minds at rest for themselves. You have my sympathy because when it comes to family decisions are always hard to make. The only thing that you can do is to continue pleading with them, they will in all likelihood turn out negative but it is better for you to be worried about your family, at least you care.

If there's free testing nearby where you live, volunteer to take them with you, and go to be tested yourself as an example to them.

Of course, probably deep down they are reluctant to give credit to the possibility that they might have it.
It's not unusual to deny the possibility as long as it's possible to do so.
The problem comes in waiting too long to get help.

Prayers gong up for you and your family. :crossrc:

If you can't get them to test, assuming you have been close to them, wait a couple of days more and get tested yourself. Hopefully you are asymptomatic or test negative. If it is the former, it would let your family be aware of the high chance they too are positive.

Are you around your family often in normal circumstances? If you think they could have it and they're refusing testing, I would keep your distance either until they do get tested, or until such a time that any chance they did have it has passed. We can't control others but we can control ourselves.

I'm staying with them in Aalborg Denmark over the summer, normally I'm living in Oslo Norway. They moved to Denmark a year ago. This is to say that I have to consider myself possibly exposed to the virus. Thing is they're going to church aswell as the marked etc. It kind of ticks me off that they don't care.

Hopefully it's just the gentle rhinovirus, but one never knows. I've told them that they should consider this a rehearsal as we could very likely come down with the real thing later if this ain't the coronavirus.

I'm starting to understand how the virus grew to be such a plague to begin with. Recklessness of some causes illness of many I guess.

You would be considered part of the "vulnerable" class, right? Because you've had medical treatments recently, your immune system could be weakened, is that correct? I would say as your family they have a duty to take every precaution if they're going to be around you otherwise they could be putting your life in danger.

Shame on them if they've considered that and are still doing what they're doing.

Things you can't see, where the effects aren't obvious, are hard to take seriously. I did quite a bit of work with radioactive isotopes way back when. It's hard to respect what you can't see. Some people just can't manage to do it. It's almost natural to ignore it. So we have contamination. People might be more careful about Ebola. I'm not sure.

Yes I had cancer a few years ago, but I'm supposed to have a normal immune system by now. I'm just not to comfortable about the idea that I might need another hospitalization. I'm sick and tired of hospitals.
Hopefully I'll just react like anyone else at my age, but I feel a tad vulnerable to be honest.

My health is not my biggest concern though. Im more anxious about older and weaker relatives and congregational members under active cancer treatment. This might be the final push for some of them.

I don't blame you for the discomfort at all, after what you've been through the inside of a hospital would be the last thing you'd want to see for any reason.

Even if your health is good, it's still inconsiderate of anyone to not account for your concerns and force you to be potentially exposed.
