California bans singing in places of worship as pandemic worsens in state | KTLA

While you can still attend in-person church services in California, you can’t sing.

The state, to curb a rapidly worsening pandemic, has temporarily banned singing and chanting in places of worship.

“Practices and performances present an increased likelihood for transmission of COVID-19 through contaminated exhaled droplets and should occur through alternative methods like internet streaming,” the state’s Department of Public Health announced in an order Wednesday.

Will see how this works at Church today.
At least so far we can still attend.

You would think he has more to worry about than people going to church.

The governor is acting to keep his people safe.

How coronavirus spread to 87% of the singers at a Washington choir practice - CNN

(CNN)Public health officials studying the Covid-19 outbreak among members of a Washington choir found numerous ways the virus could have spread, according to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Authorities interviewed all 122 members of the Skagit Valley Chorale, which met every Tuesday for 2.5 hours before the outbreak. They focused on two rehearsals held March 3 and March 10 in Mount Vernon, Washington.

The report said 53 people were sickened and two died -- and all but one attended both rehearsals. The report said Thirty-three cases were confirmed, the report said, and 20 people had probable infections.

Seems like a sensible compromise. Pretty sure singing isn’t an essential part of worship.
Plus it was an obvious significant contributor to previous outbreaks.

But no, people will fight it because, well, who knows. I mean, we have groups of poor people who have been tricked into voting to give more money to billionaires. Some are obviously incapable of taking care of their own best interests. I imagine we'll see a similar problem here.

How about ... all people (not just in church settings) who sing in a public setting are required to wear masks.

The prejudices being shown by some of these governors and other politicians is disconcerting to say the least.

I would like to point out it is incorrect to imply this is targeting Christians. The suggestion the governor made applies to all religious institutions, not just churches. Many religions can involve singing or chanting to one degree or another, not just Christianity. Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists all participate in singing or chanting as part of their collective worship or devotional activities.

No, it's not... not in any religion I am familiar with.

How exactly are we defining "essential" here?

Let's be honest, according to Christian theology, God doesn't need our worship.

Ditto for Buddhism, another religion I am familiar with. Buddha doesn't need our incense and offerings. They are beautiful gestures of sincerity, but not essential, and can even potentially become distractions.

It is the people who sing now, unmasked, undisciplined, who are driving people away from church.
God doesn't want you to infect your fellow churchgoers with your defiant selfishness.
I drive 20 miles away out into the country where I know I can feel safe, but those in larger cities can't get away from arrogant superspreaders even in church.

Pretty sure you know nothing about it.

Apart from the whole growing up in the Church of England part? Yeah other than that, and plenty of religious study over the years, I’m sure I’m totally clueless about how pivotal singing is to the experience of worship.

Some of you people really make me laugh. You follow a religion whose early adherents were literally fed to wild animals for entertainment on the basis of their beliefs, and who even today face oppression and death in some countries for those same beliefs. Yet despite living in a country that is predominately Christian, where you’re free to worship, build giant monuments to your faith, evangelize at will and basically do whatever you want, apparently it’s just too much to ask you to temporarily hold off on the hymns for a few months to try and protect vulnerable people from a deadly virus.

I know lots of churches that have gone online for services, and some have become outdoor drive ins. There are ways around the restrictions that do not require exposing others or yourself.

I feel sorry for those that can't adopt to the new situation.
