• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I had bad thoughts about the Holy Spirit

First off, Holy Spirit, if you are reading this know that I love you.

I have been having bad thoughts about the Holy Spirit for a while now. I don't want to trigger any of you so I won't out right say what they were, just that they were about Him leaving me, perversions of His name that I had heard from atheists and other bad thoughts.

Now some of these thoughts, I get this bad feeling in my gut when I have them (it physically hurts me to have them), while others I feel nothing at all and just brush them off. It feels like the ones that hurt came from my head (but not my heart), the other ones were the enemy or some random thoughts from my subconscious, idk.

We are one Spirit with the Holy Spirit, so it makes sense that I would feel some of the things He is feeling. Ephesians 4:4, 1 Corinthians 3:16

I think I have grieved the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) because lately I have been unable to feel Him that much, except when I think something bad and it hurts, or I pray in tongues but then I also get assaulted by bad thoughts which ruins it.

Just felt the need to post this. Not sure what I want from you guys.

I know we are sealed with Him (Ephesians 1:13) so I do not think we can lose our salvation. But I just want the Holy Spirit to be pleased with me.

It appears I have grieved the Spirit of God. I found this sermon by Charles Spurgeon and it reflects my experience.

What Happens When You Grieve the Holy Spirit

Now the question is, how can I mend this broken relationship with the Holy Spirit???

Please don't pray in tongues, it doesn't edify man or God. Paul said he'd rather speak 5 words that someone could understand. please don't do it. Pray in your native tongue to God, even alone in silence, but in earnest.

I grieved him also under pressure for months, crying, praying studying the bible, delving myself right in.......and suddenly on May 1st i woke from the couch with tears of joy thanking the Lord.

This is part of the process when your wrestling with the Lord and the troubles around you become unbearable. Its very easy to say to someone 'Grief not the Holy Spirit', but when you stop grieving him you're eyes will be opened and you'll be comforted, be patient . I believe its the Holy Spirit sealing you when you grief him not.

I tried to figure out what had happened for days and i came across this sermon, when this preacher started to talk around 40mins in, i jumped of the chair this time and said, " that's it".

Do not think it will be a dramatic experience, the Holy spirit will comfort everyone differently according to their troubles, he comes as comforter that tailor made for your situation in your time of trouble, not just when you think it should happen, he just comes. It could be during a troublesome time or during a church hymn where you will feel uplifted in some way, but you'll know you've been blessed.

Take all of spurgeon's words in, take all of this sermon in, even start at the beginning of this ministers Holy spirit series to get enlightenment. I'll post the link below the sealer sermon. God bless.

Paul was talking about praying in tongues in Church, to other people. Of course if you have the gift of praying in tongues you should do it but only by yourself as it does not edify other people unless there is an interpreter. Why would God give us this gift, if we should not use it? He wouldn't, but its more for our personal spiritual life than anything else.

I have good news, I felt Him today. I was just laying in bed and said I was sorry about the bad thoughts and suddenly I started crying tears of joy. He really knows how to comfort me just at the right time. He truly is the Comforter! I actually felt Him again when typing this down, a big smile and teary eyes. Praise the Holy Spirit!!!

I'm really sorry to give you this news, the Apostles when visited by the Holy ghost spoke the languages of all the other nations around them in Jerusalem and they even were able to speak to those people around them in their dialects in order to spread the Gospel.

I pray you aren't trying to speak in some language no one can understand. Charasmatic movements are very much about these days, even people who claim to cast out devils, but i've never yet heard of anyone willing to go into a hospital and casting out Coronavirus.

I'm glad to give you this news, Apostle Paul spoke in the tongues of angels, as well as tongues of men.

1 Corinthians 13:1 - Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

1 Corinthians 14:2 - For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Personally I cannot understand what I am saying when speaking in tongues, it could be an earthly language or a language of angels. But it is not a language I can recognize, however I thank the Holy Spirit for this gift. However right now I am scared of using this gift because when I do the enemy attacks me with bad thoughts.

Friend i would look at those verses in context, not individually.

As a summary, 1 Corinthians 13 :1-7

Charity or love is absolutely necessary if a church is to function as God intends. People can use their Spirit-given gifts, they can speak in angelic tongues, understand deep mysteries, give all their possessions to the poor, and sacrifice their very bodies, but actions performed without love count for nothing. The word love was tossed around in literature, music and advertising. Surely it was much the same in ancient Corinth especially with its rampant promiscuity. Yet Paul provides a description of charity that has nothing to do with hearts and flowers. True Christian charity is action in response to the conviction of one's heart and mind.

1 Corinthians 14:1-5

Paul begins by making himself clear that people should be eager to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and he reiterates what he had just written about the importance of Charity (love) in connection with spiritual gifts. Apparently believers at Corinth were enamoured with the gift of speaking in tongues. Paul assures them that this gift has its place, yet it needs to be used with love and discretion. He contrasts the gift of tongues with that of a prophet. The role of the NT prophet was to discern God's message to the church through the Holy Spirit. Early believers had no bibles for reference, even OT scrolls were costly. So the role of the prophet was vital. Furthermore, the person speaking in tongues didn't know what he was saying, nor did the church. Only the person speaking in tongues felt edified, whereas prophesy edified all who heard.

Ok, but that does not refute my points. You said that the only gifts of tongues were in human tongues, so that the disciples could go and spread the gospel. My point was that there are also unknown tongues, languages of angels, which is scriptural and apostle Paul had this ability. You said I should not speak in tongues at all. My point was that me speaking in tongues to a crowd of people is pointless unless there is an interpreter, but praying in tongues by myself is edifying, as scripture says.

I was raised believing tongues was bad it of the devil. As I became an adult and sat under solid biblical teaching, I realized it's actually a gift from the Spirit so pray in tongues if you want just don't be OCD about it. Second , I used to have those thoughts too and used to go to my pastor who assured me I was still saved. I was embarrassed to even say what the thoughts were but I had to say it cause I felt condemned. From a biblical perspective thoughts in our minds are not our fault. It is spiritual warfare but this experience is helping you stand more in Christ and not your own merit. You are already sealed in Him. You didn't grieve the Holy Spirit by having thoughts , grieving the Holy Spirit is when we commit an actual sin and keep doing it without conviction. Enjoy your day knowing you are loved.

I do not believe speaking in angelic languages on this Earth edifies anyone. It doesn't make any other believer grow in grace and have more confidence in their faith. Something i believe every Christian supernaturally desires to do on this Earth ie- helping others to grow in grace and mature in their faith so they know their salvation is sure before Christ's judgement and they've fought the good fight on this Earth 1 John 4:17

where is the scripture does it say praying in angelic tongues by yourself is edifying? If you can show me i will humbly accept it as scriptural and a direction from God.

So I just watched the Kanye West music video "Wash Us In The Blood", the title apparently refering to the blood of Jesus Christ. It was a strange music video, and a thought came into my mind "satanic" and not seconds after that the lyrics was "Holy Spirit come down" and I had a bad feeling in my gut.

Now I am concerned that I might have blasphemed Him in my mind by attributing His work to satan. Was this Kanye West video/song divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit? I don't know.

Because you have OCD and this fear of blaspheming is your current obsession, you will continue to feel as though you've blasphemed. That's why you have to learn to treat it as OCD - which means ignoring those uncomfortable fears that you've blasphemed. Do you have a plan for dealing with your obsessive thoughts and resisting your compulsions?

Ask the holy spirit to guide you as you study on it. I'm afraid your own intellect won't help you.

edifieth himself ...... so he's not edifying God or anyone else.

Genesis 8:21

And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

I was coming back from running and I was thinking and was saying the Holy Spirit is alive but I accidentally whispered and froze on Ali like the opposite. I said to God and Jesus I meant to say the Holy Spirit is alive and good. Did I commit a sin?
