At the garden of Gethsemane, when Jesus was praying to the Father while his disciple were asleep, the intensity of Jesus’ prayer was so incredible that physically, blood was coming out of his pores (Luke 22:44). Jesus bloody sweat is evidence of great grief. Hematidrosis is a very rare condition in which a person sweats blood when under extreme physical or emotional stress. The artist Leonardo da Vinci wrote about a soldier who had bloody sweat after battle. When under stress, the body goes into flight-or-fight mode. This flight-or-fight response can trigger the rupture of capillaries in the body. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels located throughout tissue. They carry essential nutrients to different parts of the body. Capillaries are also located around the sweat glands. In cases of severe fear or stress, these tiny blood vessels can burst and cause blood to exit the body through the sweat glands.

Jesus was exceedingly sorrowful in His soul to the point of death that He sweat blood, knowing full well that His hour was at hand. That moment of separation from His Father for the very first time since before eternity was at hand. Not only would Jesus have to endure physical pain and torture at Calvary, but even worse, Jesus would experience the full wrath of a sin-hating Father, when the sin of humanity would rain on His sinless body at that moment of separation from His Father. Such absolute, total, wrenching, and crushing heartache. It is not surprising to me atleast that Jesus died remarkably sooner than expected while the two thieves that were crucified by His side died hours later. I heard of a Danish doctor by the name Richtor, who dedicated himself to the studying of torture of the Crucifixion. After years of study, he concluded that Jesus died of a brokenheart… The very heart of Christ is Compassion. Jesus died in darkness so that we may live in light; Jesus died in silence so that we may forever have a word from the LORD; Jesus died forsaken so that we may be accepted… I’ll never know how much it cost, to see my sin upon that Cross.

I love the Lord Jesus so much when I think about what happened it makes me cry

I don't really cry haha! I don't actually remember the last I cried. Perhaps it's because I'm a man. But writing this blog post moved me to tears for the love and compassion of our Lord Jesus.

I was taught that the real torture of Jesus was physical. When the "passion of the Christ" was released back in 2004, it did d a pretty good job of communicating that physical torture. People, including me, were literally cringing in their seats as they watched. Probably this torture at the hands of a government which was renowned for physical torture would have at least been some consideration in Jesus' thoughts. But even then, he did teach that we should not fear what men can do to the body. I think his concerns were of a different sort at that time.

I think you are right that the real pain he felt was that of being separated from God; up to that point, even from his childhood when he was 12, he was already well versed in his role as a messenger for God (Luke 2:49). It was only his parents chastising him, and presumably some cultural, reputational obligation that he left from preaching at the temple at that time to go back with his parents and obey them until he was considered an adult in his culture (around 30 years old). It's like he was guilty of being too eager to get started working for God!

There's very little information about Jesus' childhood or life up until he started preaching, but the little we do have suggests that he spent his whole life engaged in what it means to be close to God. We have that scrap of info about him going off to preach at the temple when he was 12, but we also have the author of the book of Hebrews saying that Jesus learned obedience through the things he suffered (Hebrews 5:8). However, the record also shows that Jesus had the full measure of God's spirit (John 3:34) unlike the rest of us who struggle to learn how to interact even partially with God's spirit. He had the full measure of God's spirit. Even at 12 he was already contending with the learned religious leaders at the temple. He learned obedience through suffering. He was obedient to parents who did not really understand the purpose of his existence.

The balance seems to be that Jesus had his own struggles with what it meant to be born as both fully human and fully divine consistent with the kinds of struggles that we all have, but he also had this kind of special relationship beyond what we all have. The details of that balance are still elusive to me, but it does indicate that Jesus felt some kind of special pain at being separated from God which went well beyond any physical apprehension.

The idea that Jesus was so upset at the separation that it caused him to sweat blood is totally consistent with the spirit of his message about the spirit being so much more important that the physical.

It is good to meditate on our Savior on the Cross, and come to appreciate more what it cost Him and His Father to open the WAY (John 14:6) and fully show us the way for sincere seekers after God ---John 14 is so important for seekers to know.

You do have a great way of using your words.

Jesus's sacrifice for us on the cross, makes me each time feel so thankful toward God and Him. Being reminded of how great His grace is through Christ Jesus, and how great a cost it was!

That He thought of us mere humans, whom are only dust and very sinful at heart!

This shows what a great God we have, Who were willing to take all our sins debt upon Him and die for us! The wages of sin is death!

Romans 6:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Jesus Christ conquered death upon the cross, whilst opening up the way for us through Him in having life given to us. Real life! Which has no "death" in it!

We have reason to continue rejoicing in our salvation given to us in Jesus Christ!

And to share it with others, hoping they too may become saved!

Thanks, I probably would never have started to write if not for people's encouragement. I thank God for giving me such a gift and I hope to God to continue to use the gift to the glory of God.

I often hear some people say “I’m not worth it.” But God tells us through Isaiah (54:9) that “With everlasting love I will have compassion on you says the LORD, your Redeemer.” Isaiah is telling us that we are worth it to God. The Cross shows how impossibly valuable we are to God. It is the value of your soul & mine that compelled Jesus to leave the glories of Heaven for earth; live in poverty; sweat blood at Gethsemane; endure much physical torture; hang helplessly on a wooden cross at Calvary where he was mocked & died with spikes pierced into his hands and feet.
