Russia Secretly Offered Afghan Militants Bounties to Kill U.S. Troops, Intelligence Says

American intelligence officials have concluded that a Russian military intelligence unit secretly offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing coalition forces in Afghanistan — including targeting American troops — amid the peace talks to end the long-running war there, according to officials briefed on the matter.

The United States concluded months ago that the Russian unit, which has been linked to assassination attempts and other covert operations in Europe intended to destabilize the West or take revenge on turncoats, had covertly offered rewards for successful attacks last year.

Islamist militants, or armed criminal elements closely associated with them, are believed to have collected some bounty money, the officials said. Twenty Americans were killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2019, but it was not clear which killings were under suspicion.

The intelligence finding was briefed to President Trump, and the White House’s National Security Council discussed the problem at an interagency meeting in late March, the officials said. Officials developed a menu of potential options — starting with making a diplomatic complaint to Moscow and a demand that it stop, along with an escalating series of sanctions and other possible responses, but the White House has yet to authorize any step, the officials said.
In response, Trump is silent. He wants Russia back in the G7 and is removing US troops from Germany.

So you are defending Russia paying bounties for the deaths of US soldiers while there are peace talks going on between Afganistan and the US?

The Red Army was not our friend. If you remember, the US did not participate in the summer Olympics held in Russia in 1980 because of the Soviet invasion of Afganistan. Happily, the Soviets participated in the winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY in order to beat the US on US territory and their hockey team lost to the US. I love the movie "Miracle". :)

The Soviet invasion into Afganistan in the late 1970s gave rise to the Taliban. This isn't turn around is fair play unless Russia is still the Soviet Union, a communist country. and not even then. .

The US gave arms to Afghan militants when the Red Army was in Afghanistan. Turnabout is fair play.

Seems a good enough reason to cheer for soldiers dying... Anything else holds Donald responsible for his inaction.

Your link mentions US troops killed in 2019 - i.e., before the peace talks.

The Red Army was not our friend.

Is the US Army Russia's friend?

Seems a good enough reason to cheer for soldiers dying... Anything else holds Donald responsible for his inaction.

Soldiers are dying in Afghanistan because soldiers are in Afghanistan. The only thing that can be done about is to pull the troops out. What good would it do for the President to raise a hissy fit? You think Putin's going to care?

Putin certainly cares about the lucrative oil deals Donald helped procure for him.

And of course, Putin greatly appreciates Donald's demands for Russia's reinstatement at G7.

So what if he puts a hit out on our troops? Donald will stay obedient, helpful, and loyal...

...and so will you, Comrade.

The OP was criticizing Trump for remaining silent. Apparently, she thinks the proper thing for the President to do is go to the Kremlin wagging his finger and sanctimoniously telling the Russians to stop supporting the Afghan guerillas.

You know just as well as I do what the Russians will say, to a man:

"You did it to us when we were Afghanistan. You don't want to lose anymore troops there? We suggest doing what we did - withdraw all the troops, every last one.

You want us stop supporting those guerilla fighters? What are you going to do for us in return? Lift all the sanctions against us? Recognize Crimea as Russian territory? Give us a free hand in Syria? Nothing? You'll give us nothing in return for stopping it? I think you already know what we'll say to that."

...and they'll be right.

What kind of American takes the Russian's side on this issue?

I guess "stop paying the Afghan guerrillas to kill US troops" is too much to expect.

Running away would be a well-used page from Donald's playbook...

Nothing? You'll give us nothing in return for stopping it? I think you already know what we'll say to that."

Which is why their paying Afghan forces for US corpses is fair and balanced. No wonder Donald approves.

Interesting article, including this:

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he had requested additional information from the Trump administration, saying that such an operation would deepen his concerns about Moscow's actions beyond Russian borders. "If accurate, the administration must take swift and serious action to hold the Putin regime accountable," he said on Twitter.
Calling out Russia is a first step. Trump needs to stop advocating for Russia to be back in the G7. He needs to meet with others (intelligence, senate leaders, house leaders etc) to determine future actions which do not require war. Putin wants sanctions lifted. Imposing more would hurt them.
