1 Corinthians 14:
37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

I really would love to understand the "tongues" issue. Lord help me.
Romans 15:2. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit only manifest for the edification of the body.
1 Corinthians 12:7. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.

What is more disconcerting is how people who speak the same language struggle to understand
one another. We desperately need to learn to speak by the Spirit. Paul places prophesying high above tongues for use in the fellowship of the saints.

1 Corinthians 14:
1 Pursue love
, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; or he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

Being spiritual is deeper than which gifts we have.

"rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:4)

Which gifts we have has nothing to do with if we are pleasing to God, then. And certainly God's real gifts, then, have nothing to do with church status.

How we are is what matters. Notice how in His Sermon on the Mount Jesus started right off with how to be >

"poor in spirit"

"meek"

"merciful"

"pure in heart"
.

The manifestations of the Spirit are for the benefit of the body of Christ.
Consider how the saints prayed in Acts 4:

29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,
30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done
through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.
31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken;
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Nothing about speaking in tongues, but their prayer was answered.
The Corinthian church failed to understand what you are saying here.
The gifts are not about us.

1 Corinthians 4:7. For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

Amen. The beatitudes are testimonies to the sanctifying, heart changing work of the Holy Spirit in us.

One thing it seems to be is the grace that in speaking with wisdom you don't even know what you're saying but you are saying the truth in another language and so you know that it does not come from you. spiritual wisdom in general is not something that we come up with, it is of the spirit and of those good spirits God puts with us and ultimately from God who is wisdom itself.

Joseph Prince once mentioned when he was saying a certain word in tongues that he did not know... It turned out he was saying Shekinah. That is a Hebrew word for the Holy Spirit.

The greatest in heaven are those that love the most. Truth is often easier but it is like snow when it is Without Love. The heaven of Heavens is the heaven of love. Heaven is the heaven of Truth. Great teachers such as Thomas Aquinas still lacked somewhat in love, just as many of us might lack it. Surely love is one of the main purposes of this wretched and limited reality. What replaces love in this world has to be inferior, that's why governmental power is so depended upon.

1 Peter 1:
22
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere
love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible,
through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
24 because:
All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.
The grass withers, and its flower falls away,
25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.
Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

The Holy Spirit transforms you from the inside. His Holy Spirit conforms you into the image of Christ. Over the years you see this happen, is truly amazing to behold.

1 Corinthians 2:
9
But as it is written:
Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.

Galatians 6:1. Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

Who is sufficient for these things?

Exodus 19:22. Also let the priests who come near the Lord consecrate themselves,
lest the Lord break out against them.
1 Chronicles 29:5. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD?

There are personal tongues given to all believers for perfect prayer and perfect praise. Mark 16:16-18. Note no interpretation needed, but you can pray for a special gift of interpretation of tongues from the list in 1 Cor. 12. The list in 1 Cor. 12 are not for personal use, but for the profit of all in the congregation. These are NOT given to all believers as 1 Cor. 12:30 says. These are special and used in association with the offices Jesus gives the church in Ephesians 4. So as far as tongues. A person with the office of giving messages to the church from God by use of tongues, must be done only if a person known to have the office of interpretation of tongues is present to give the interpretation. Both are offices, and not given to all as is personal prayer language.

Are You Spiritual?

Remind me of Paul's letter to Corinthians and Hebrews.

1 Corinthians 3:1-9, Hebrews 5:11-14
Romans 1:11. For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift,
to the end ye may be established.
