as a paid ... holiday?
Juneteenth is great, I hate slavery as a secular definition. So this is a great holiday to have as a reminder that ungodly slavery, which encompassed a certain group of people, ended this day.

However, please somebody explain this to me:
"Multiple companies have announced that they will either honor or recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday for their employees this year, as a sign of support for the Black community."

Article: Here's a running list of all the big companies observing Juneteenth this year

Someone I know went to work today and was told by their company that (in so many words) only black people will be getting time and a half.
Someone explain to me how this isn't "racist"?

Note: I do not believe in racism, it's a secular view; however I do recognize it as a secular definition. I believe the proper word to be "tribalism" or "nations" as God puts it. Nation against nation, as an example.

Also, if this isn't the right forum, I apologize. Move as needed.

I'm generally OK with this. We could use more paid holidays.

Someone I know went to work today and was told by their company that (in so many words) only black people will be getting time and a half.
That's how you get an HR nightmare.

The business world is quick to recognise a bandwagon that will make them money. There is nothing altruistic about this. Pick any cause that is gaining popularity, right or wrong. Watch the money bees buzz around the money pot.

I am supportive of a national holiday ending slavery in the US but Juneteenth doesn't make much sense. I am pretty informed historically yet I don't recall hearing about Juneteenth until the last year or so. Perhaps its more of a regional celebration. My issue is that it seems awful arbitrary. Almost branding if you will. The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves that were in rebellion and yet there were two border states that were not in rebellion. So the day after Juneteenth Slavery was still legal and practiced in Kentucky and Delaware until the ratification of the 13th amendment. It would make more sense to commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation or ratification of the 13 Amendment in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

It’s just confusing to me that I’m just hearing about this Juneteenth thing like it’s new. Apparently it’s not, so all they did was revise it as a paid holiday?
It is not new. It is just newly recognized by whites, corporations,& government.
