Jesus once said "Sabbath is made for man, not man for the Sabbath". Why did Jesus think Man Needed His Father's Sabbath?

I think the Spirit of this same Christ gives us some insight to this through the Word's of Isaiah.

Is. 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

God's Sabbath is a Fast from the world we are all born into. We are surrounded by wickedness, lawlessness, and unrighteousness every day. Jesus knows this as He said HE didn't want to take us out of the world.

John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

God, in His infinite wisdom, gave His people a day of rest from this world. The 7th day of the week to fast from the wickedness we are born into. One day a week, one 24 hour period where we can hide from this world for one day. The Mainstream Preachers of Isaiah's time, as well and Jesus' time, had forgotten the reason for this Holy Fast. The said they kept it, but the Christ knew they did not.

This same Spirit of Christ goes on to tell us what this Fast is for.

5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

What is oppressing God's People? Is it not the pressures of this world? What are the heavy burdens and the "yoke" that ensnares us? Is it not deception, false teaching, wolves in sheep's clothing?

I especially admire the portion highlighted in red. How can a man be honest with others of he can't be honest with himself.

The Christ created HIS Sabbath for man because we can not endure in this wicked world without a break from it at least once a week. One day where we fast from the news, from work, from this world, and center our thoughts on the Righteousness of God. His Words, His Instruction. A day where we show our children the Love of God. A Day "set apart" from the other 6 days as a fast from this world.

Many religious men believe and teach that we don't need this fast. That the Word of God which became Flesh, only gave it to folks of a certain DNA. These religious men reject the Spirit of Christ which had these Word's written for our admonition. They don't believe in the Fast God created for them. This is sad to be sure, but the Spirit of Christ did warn us of this very thing.

Jer. 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

But they said, We will not walk therein.

Can men "endure to the end" in this life without the Fast of the Christ? I think this is the wrong question. The question should be; "Why would men, who have turned to God, want to"?

Is. 58:
12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

God, in His infinite wisdom, gave His people a day of rest from this world. The 7th day of the week to fast from the wickedness we are born into.

The 7th day Sabbath was created BEFORE there was any wickedness in the world. Adam & Eve were sinless originally (they didn't need a rest from wickedness). He also blessed and sanctified the 7th day ... also being part of His creation.

shabath: to
Original Word: שָׁבַת
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: shabath
Phonetic Spelling: (shaw-bath')
Definition: to cease, desist, rest

Does God get tired? Of course not.

He ceased His work of creation with His last creation being His special day that no one can change .... why? Because no one can change what God created including the 7th day.

Matthew 12:9
Berean Study Bible
For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

He is Lord of the Sabbath because He created it and He also says to remember that fact and keep the day HOLY (set apart) ... set apart from what? From all other days.

and Jesus and the disciples most certainly did.

The Sabbath was a sign of a special people, commemorative of the work of creation, and hallowed to the honor of Yahweh, the covenant-God. As man honored God by keeping the Sabbath holy, so by the Sabbath, God "sanctified" Israel and marked them as a holy people

and I would also add as it is made known in the NT .... His people are all who believe (back then, now and into the future until He returns) .... all who believe are His Israel through the seed of Abraham.

No where in His word do we find He changed the 7th day that He originally created. We are to honor Him and His special day He created for us.

The Puritans referred to the Sabbath as "the market day for the soul".

In regard to the law the Sabbath was a absence of work. Even meals were to be prepared in advance.

I doubt the task masters in those days would have given their workers a day off unless it was commanded in the law. So I can see this command being made for man.

You post something Jesus directly stated then asked was the sabbath made for man. My answer is as the Lord stated -yes

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

Jesus is the one who judges. - Thank God

The beasts of the field were created before Adam and Eve, and before the 7th Day. This would include the Serpent that God brought into the Garden of Eden. To say God's Sabbath was created before evil existed in the world is untrue, if the Word's of God are our guide.

I posted Word's which were inspired by the same Christ that inspired Paul. Your post seems to ignore them. The implication of your interpretation here is that men will not be judged by observing pagan rituals VS. walking as Jesus Walked. I don't believe that is the message Paul was promoting in Col. 2.

"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."

The Bible Sabbath is Christ's Sabbath made for man. This is the reason it was Paul's custom for walk in it. The verse you referred to;

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

There are "Feast's of the Christ" and their are religious traditions of man, or high days and "feasts unto the Lord" that religious men created.

Paul is speaking about those Holy Days honored by the "body of Christ", or HIS Church, who strive to walk even as HE walked. The mainstream preachers of HIS time were promoting religious traditions of men that transgressed God's Commandments. It is important to distinguish between the two.

In Isaiah 56:6-8 it is specifically gentiles being singled out and blessed for Sabbath keeping... long after the days of Egypt.

In Acts 13 it is specifically gentiles asking for more Gospel preaching "on the next Sabbath"

In Acts 18:4 it is "every Sabbath" that both Jews and gentiles gathered for gospel preaching.

In Isaiah 66:23 for all eternity after the cross in the New Earth -- it is "all mankind" that comes before God to worship "from Sabbath to Sabbath"

You brought up Col. 2. I was just showing that Paul made a distinction between Feast's and Sabbaths of the Christ, and religious traditions of men. One we are told not to let men judge us for honoring, the other not to let men deceive us into honoring.

I prefer to let the Creator of the Sabbath define the purpose of His own Sabbath. That is why I quoted HIS Word's regarding HIS OWN Sabbath in Is. 58. As well as the prophesy regarding men's rebellion and refusal to walk in HIS ways.

I agree that God's Sabbath Day is a shadow of God's Rest which will take place when this mortal shall have put on immortality. As with the wise virgins, God's People are preparing for this rest symbolized by preparing during the week, for His weekly Sabbath rest.

Matt. 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

There was never any commandment against walking in fellowship on God's Holy Sabbath, nor was there a law which stated a man can not pick a blackberry or ear of corn to eat while in this fellowship.

Jesus broke the mainstream preachers of His Time's sabbath, not God's Sabbath.

I don't keep the sabbath as in regard to the law. A complete absence of work - a day of rest
I have the Spirit of Christ in me which was received by faith.

Jesus did not mention the sabbath in a answer to which commandments.
Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”

18 “Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’

Clearly the one who judges is not enforcing the law in regard to the Sabbath.

I would state Jesus viewed the sabbath as made for man not man for the sabbath. I follow Him.

Gathering on the Sabbath was a violation of the law. He didn't dispute that. He stated the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath. That HE was Lord of the Sabbath.

He also didn't mention "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart", but surely you are not preaching this Law doesn't exist any more. And how does one Love God? Are we to make up our own religion with our own instructions like the Pharisees did? Or do we place trust on the God of the Bible?

He didn't mention idolatry either. Are you sure you want to follow a religion in which this law is also rejected?

You might consider that there was a Priesthood given specifically to Levites whose sole purpose was the administration of God's Laws, and to perform sacrificial "works" for the atonement of sins. Something that must take place before a man can enter the Kingdom of heaven.

When asked "which", Jesus clearly spoke of God's Commandments to His People, not the "works of the Law" of Atonement given by God to the Levites on Israels behalf.

Everyone who calls Jesus Lord, Lord, believes they are filled with His Spirit. But Jesus Himself said not everyone who calls Him Lord, Lord, are His.

I posted scriptures from the Spirit of Christ in the OP in Which this Holy Spirit inspired Isaiah to shed light on the purpose of His Holy Sabbath. Paul said these Word's were written for my admonition. So you can see how a person might be interested in "hearing HIS Sayings" especially in a world with so many "Other" religious voices. Personally I don't believe HIS Spirit has changed regarding His Holy Sabbath.

I believe this because of the Scriptures which say as much.

Gathering on the Sabbath was a violation of the law. He didn't dispute that. He stated the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath. That HE was Lord of the Sabbath.

Yes, HE should know what is lawful to do and what is unlawful to do on a Sabbath He created "for man" as the Word of God. It wasn't Jesus and His Disciples who were transgressing God's Commandments by their man made religious traditions. It was the mainstream preachers of that time who had polluted God's Laws.

Again, there was no law which forbids a man from taking a walk on His Holy Sabbath and picking a blackberry or ear of corn to eat. At least not from the God of the Bible.

You are assuming the Pharisees were right, and that Jesus was breaking His Fathers Commandment. Although a popular religious preaching, that the Pharisees, the mainstream preachers of Jesus time, also promoted. This religious doctrine is untrue.

Jesus said once; "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by Every Word which proceeds from the mouth of God".

It is the "mouth of God" which defines His Holy Sabbath for His People, not the mainstream preachers of that time, nor the mainstream preachers of our time.

Gathering together for worship was/is encouraged in the church.
However the Sabbath in regard to the law was a absence of work - a day of rest.
The disciples were gathering food. But Jesus, (my source), stated to His accusers the sabbath was made for man. Man was not made for the sabbath.

The Spirit would not lead one into a different answer then what Jesus clearly stated.

The NT says "Sin is transgression of the Law" 1 John 3:4 and that Jesus was "without sin" 2 Cor 5.

You agree with that -- right?

1. He did dispute that - he stated that they were condemning the innocent.
2. Even in the NT "Sin is transgression of the Law" 1 John 3:4 and Jesus "had no sin" 2 Cor 5
3. Sabbath "made for mankind" not "mankind made for the Sabbath" Mark 2:27 speaks of the "making of both " in Genesis 1-2:3. It is "for all mankind".

No wonder then in Isaiah 66:23 "from Sabbath to Sabbath shall ALL mankind come before me to worship" - for all eternity after the cross in the New Earth.

1. There is only one Gospel Gal 1:6-9
2. and that one-and-only Gospel was preached to Abraham long before Moses - Gal 3:8
3. Moses and Elijah stand with Christ in glory before the cross - in Matthew 17.
4. Lev 23:2-3 the Sabbath is a day for "holy convocation" from the very start.

You think He forgot? I think the sabbath was made for man.

You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.'"

amen.

And the New Covenant says "I will write My Law on their heart and mind" Jer 31:31-34.. exegesis informs us that Jeremiah and his readers knew of "the Ten" spoken by God and written by God "on stone". It includes that unique law where as Paul says "the first commandment with a promise" is the 5th commandment -- Eph 6:1-2. No wonder then that for all eternity after the cross in the New Earth "from Sabbath to Sabbath shall all mankind come before Me to worship" Isaiah 66:23
