• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

A conviction from God or was it just a coincident?

How do I know if something is a message or conviction from God rather than a coincidence?

Last night I was imagining up stories (i.e. like a book plot) before bed since it helps me sleep, but then I started feeling weird about it. I prayed to God to see if if what I was imagining was ok, and then my TV clicked. It usually makes a clicking or a similar sound when settling at night, so I prayed to God again asking Him to convict me. Then my TV clicked again right after. Normally, my TV would only make a noise once, but the the fact that it clicked a second time and right after my prayer makes me wonder if it was a message from God.

I've had this "issue" many many years ago with correlating everyday instances with God, but I more or less was able to see that they're unrelated. What bothers me this time is that I haven't had an instance like this in a long time, so I question whether this was God "speaking" to me or if it was a random flair of a past OCD issue.

This is a topic that interests me as well because often I also feel very confused about when something is sent to me by God and when it is just a coincidence. Obviously having OCD means overthinking many things, and that makes it even harder.

I am no expert, but I feel like a clicking TV might not really be an answer to your question? Maybe I am wrong, but it just feels a bit weird. The furniture and electronics in my house often make various noises, especially when the air humidity or temperature in the room rapidly change, so I've learned to just ignore those sounds. By now, I believe that God more often speaks to me through happenings in my life and through other people. And if it makes me feel good, if in my heart I have a good intuition about it, then I believe that this was sent to me from God.

For example, a few weeks ago I was feeling very lonely. I cried and told God in my prayers about how I was feeling and asked Him to ease my loneliness. And just a few days later, I actually met some wonderful new people who made me feel really good, and then even some old friends of mine randomly reached out to me. I don't think that those were coincidences.

So as for your initial question (whether the stories you were imagening are ok), I think you should not jump to conclusions and wait a little more. Be aware about what is happening around you. There might be a situation, or you might have a conversation with someone and the answer might pop up unexpectedly. But try not to read into everything too much, often things are not as complicated as we tend to think :)

The funny thing is that this particular situation played out pretty much exactly like past instances of "God speaking to me." I ended up praying about it again, and I was more or less reminded that, at least for me, God speaks to me through convictions and not through coincidences. I've had this dilemma before and already got the answer I needed then. Now, after praying and meditating on this, I came back to the same conviction I had then.

I feel like this bothers me a lot more than it should because I don't really get the surge of spiritual or emotional enlightenment that a lot of other people seem to get. So when something like this happens it feels like it's from God. Still, I can't shake the feeling that maybe God's trying to speak to me like this this one time.

God doesn't speak to people through coincidences like the one you are describing. More often than not, He will speak to believers through scripture so we can test our assumptions through the reliability of the Bible which is to be our measure of the truth.

I feel like this bothers me a lot more than it should because I don't really get the surge of spiritual or emotional enlightenment that a lot of other people seem to get.

If people "experience" spiritual "enlightenment" than it's probably about obtaining a high that validates their own opinions or desires. We all want to be right in our own eyes. Knowledge and wisdom are not equated with intense emotion in the Bible. While a person can experience joy at some new understanding while studying the Word, it's grounded in a cerebral grasp of the truth.
