As you all have probably seen in the news lately, the protestors and/or rioters in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood have barricaded several city blocks worth of areas calling themselves an "autonomous zone".

All politics aside, there are two Orthodox churches that are very close to that zone. One of which is circled in red on the map below (courtesy of Abbot Tryphon's Facebook post today). That would be St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral (ROCOR) which is the very same place where St John of Shanghai and San Francisco reposed in the late 1960s. About a block north at the corner of 13th Ave and Howell (between the circle and Denny Way) is the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.

I haven't heard much about the two in particular other than St Nicholas Cathedral cancelling an outdoor Liturgy they had planned today out of safety concerns for the parishioners.

For those who don't know, Seattle has a particular anti-Christian mindset. For those who don't know Seattle, not only is Capitol Hill the main street for nightlife, but also the city's main gay district. About where the southern border of the so-called "zone" is, is the main street where a lot of nightlife takes place (I picked up A LOT of people there during my time moonlighting as a Lyft driver). Add in the US's recent resurgence of Russophobia caused by the 2016 election and, well, I'm hoping the churches aren't harmed.

Without going too much into politics and conflicting reports, rumors, etc; please pray for the two parishes. St Nicholas and Assumption. As well as Fr Alex, the rector of St Nicholas, whom I believe still lives on the grounds of the parish in the rectory with his family. A few blocks to the east from the zone is also a Jewish synagogue. Please pray for them as well.

Lord have mercy!

Lord have mercy on your people.

This raises a question for me, something I have been struggling with for a while. What would be the proper response to those who would threaten these parishes? Does a Christian have the right to pick up arms and defend his parish from evil people? How about your own person?

I struggle with this because on the one hand, I see the martyrs of the first several centuries going along with whatever God allowed to happen in their lives, not fighting back, not killing people in self-defense, etc. I think of St. Moses the Black who calmly accepted the martyr's crown that our Lord had shown him in a dream the night before Moses was killed by barbarians.

What are your thoughts?

Lord have mercy, but the reports I hear from Seattle are that it's like a street fair and there's nothing to worry about.

Well, somebody is lying to somebody because a "street fair" is not the description I am hearing.

Just a guess on my part, I would think that parishioners have a right to guard their church in a visible, defined, defensive stance. If the building is already under attack but no person would otherwise be harmed, I believe we would be at the mercy of the alleged “authorities.”

Beating up a street preacher must be the definition a delightful street fair!

Lord have mercy, but the reports I hear from Seattle are that it's like a street fair and there's nothing to worry about.

It is becoming a killing zone although organizers hack politicians, & media say it is largely “peaceful”.

After deadly CHOP shooting, activists and officials look for ways to prevent protest zone violence

Note, at the end of the article above an activist says that the police did nothing to prevent a horrible murder in 2019 in this zone. Crime happens, that is why we are supposed to have police. At least when the police were in this area, the murderer was arrested.

The incident the “activist” liar refers to:

‘This is so senseless’: Man faces murder charge as family mourns woman stabbed at Cal Anderson Park
