Where in the Old Testament does it talk about God's sovereignty?

I'm sorry for opening another thread on this topic but I'm curious about what the Bible has to say about God's sovereignty . I know its supported by scripture, I know there are several verses in the New Testament that speak of Gods sovereignty but I'm mostly concerned about the Old Testament.

I'm not aware as to what verses talk about the sovereignty of God. I'm aware of Isaiah 45:4-10 and a few other verses in Isaiah (my wife and I are studying the book of Isaiah currently and came across those verses) but as to where else in scripture we dont know and we're curious. Perhaps Psalm 139:16 talks about the sovereignty of God as well? It could but many people dont interpret David's words in that Psalm as literal. I'm mostly looking for words from a Prophet or perhaps God himself talking about his own sovereignty? Any help would be appreciated thanks!

a few...

Psalm 135:6
Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.

Job 42:2
I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.

Psalm 115:3
But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.

Isaiah 40:23
He it is who reduces rulers to nothing, Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless.

Psalm 90: 2
Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world. Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

Proverbs 16:4
The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil.

II Chronicles 20:6
And he said, “O Lord, the God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens?
And are You not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations?
Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You.

Psalm 103:19
The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all.

Proverbs 16:9
The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.

Genesis 50:20
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.

From these verses, we see that God is sovereign over heavens and earth, over creation, over rulers and kingdoms, over time, over all mankind, and even over evil.

Job 42
1Then Job replied to the LORD: 2I know that You can do all things and that no plan of Yours can be thwarted. 3You asked, ‘Who is this who conceals My counsel without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. 4You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak. I will question you, and you shall inform Me.’b 5My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You. 6Therefore I retract my words, and I repent in dust and ashes.”

Proverbs 16:1 To man belong the plans of the
heart, but from the Lord comes the reply
of the tongue.

Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.

Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of
the Lord ; he directs it like a watercourse
wherever he pleases.

Psalm 135:6
Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.
This is the first one I thought of. Plus, you can read about how God had things go for Joseph > Genesis 37-50. People's evil deeds did not turn out for what they were planning.

Also > in the New Testament >

"God resists the proud" > in James 4:6 and in 1 Peter 5:5.

To me, this means wrong people do not really control anything.

Numbers 22

And we know how Jonah was not allowed to do what he willed to do.

And we have what happened to people who were not "thankful" > Romans 1:18-32.

And God prepares His table before us >

"in the presence of my enemies" > Psalm 23:5.

Therefore, evil people can not decide and control if and how God blesses us.

And if we obey God in His peace, His peace almighty is sovereign in us >

"the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (in Philippians 4:4-7)

Thank you very much! That's EXACTLY what we were looking for! I really think we should take a class on this subject because half of those verses I didn't even know existed in the OT. TBCH we haven't studied the OT very much aside from the book of Genesis. And only the first 30 chapters or so. I'm kind of glad my wife and I are studying the book of Isaiah because it contains a lot about the character of God and how our Lord thinks and rules over his creation.

I mean if you teach that God is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent you kind of have to add his sovereignty into that. Mankind was created to serve God not the other way around.

Sorry this is a side thought that has virtually nothing to do with the topic on hand but you bringing up the book of Philippians reminded me about it. Is Philippians 4:4-7 based on the same thought as what Paul says in Philippians 1:6?

Philippians 1:6 is one of my favorite verses of scripture because it's a promise from God that what God starts in us he WILL finish. So our sanctification is guaranteed and completely 100% a work of God. We cannot sanctify ourselves because, we will always fail. We sin, and then we sin again and again into the same sins forever and forever. If God left it up to us our sin problem would never be taken care of, we need God obviously. But, God helps us get through and past our sins and one day our sanctification will be 100% complete and we can enter God's presence sinless. That's how I interpret Philippians 1:6 anyway. But, I guess what I'm asking about 4:4-6 and this connection is, is Paul saying that the peace of God that God gives us a peace in trust that God will not only take care of our sanctification but, our whole lives? After all Paul says in previous statements in his letters that God planned for our lives and we will walk in God's plan for our lives.

I guess what I'm asking is, right now in the course of my life, I haven't learned to 100% lean on and trust God. An example would be what Christ said in Matthew 6:25-34. These verses can also be used as an argument for God's sovereignty because Christ says that God takes care of the birds so he will obviously take care of his children too. So don't worry God's got it taken care of basically.

But, I have to confess that I worry, and I worry about my life and events in my life despite following a completely sovereign God. Obviously God can see where my life is going and where it will be but each and every day I worry instead of rest in the promises and sovereignty of God. Mainly because I cannot see the future. So I struggle with trusting God. Not in my own salvation that's a sealed done deal but in my life and the events of my life.

I could give examples but, it wouldn't really make my question any clearer. I apologize for how long I made it, I don't really know how I could have made it any shorter lol.

Yes, as you have said, Philippians includes how God will sanctify us. But this is much a future tense thing, though it is going on now.

Philippians 4:4-7 . . . I would say . . . is more present tense . . . how now God wants to share with us > so we are not anxious about anything, and we are praying the way He wants, and so we are in His love and joy and peace . . . peace which guards us spiritually and emotionally.

is Paul saying that the peace of God that God gives us a peace in trust that God will not only take care of our sanctification but, our whole lives?
This peace is not only a satisfied feeling or attitude that everything will be ok. But this peace is almighty to guard our hearts and minds against all the different sorts of chaos spiritual and emotional. Plus, this peace is our Father's own harmony of how He lives and loves and works in His almighty power which is immune to . . . chaos . . . while also so creative for how to love; and Colossians 3:15 says we are commanded to be personally ruled by this peace >

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15)
