Hi Christians,
Shalom and greetings in the name of the Jesus Christ. I am a long time Christian.
I would like to enquire, in the former church I was, the pastor's wife used the title term "Magic 1,2,3" after a best selling book for a parenting course.
I was uncomfortable with it because God does not like magic in the Book of Exodus and Acts.

I left the church because of this and also the members were very unfriendly.

Was I over sensitive or overreacted?

Please help me.

Thank you for your time.

I would have been uncomfortable too. Having had a background in White Magic, one of the verses the Lord led me to in leading me out was ...
Deuteronomy 18:10 (KJV) There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

My guess is that she didn't mean literal sorcery.

Using the word "magic" in a figurative sense is perfectly fine.

While there's no such thing as magic, and ritual magick isn't something a Christian should participate in (not because there's some sort of mystical power to be afraid of, but because it's just superstition), the word magic is often employed figuratively in a lot of contexts to simply speak of the serendipitous. Sort of like telling someone "good luck" when they are about to endeavor in something, it's not about belief in actual fortune or fate, but simply telling someone that you wish them well in their endeavor.

Welcome to the Christian Forums.

Our previous pastor did not like the title of TV program "American Idol."

I can understand his point of view, and yours. Is it being over sensitive? Who am I to judge!

I left the church because of this and also the members were very unfriendly.
This is very unfortunate. I hope you found a more friendly church.

Blessings,

I'd say you were oversensitive, yes. While actual magic is nothing we want anything to do with--just as you thought--the word is also used in ordinary, casual, speech to mean something amazing or unexpected, etc. What you told us the pastor's wife said seems to me to be of this second meaning of the word.

You need not be too fearful of things like magic.

1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

However, the book title was probably not about what might be considered witchcraft. It was more likely an attempt to be hip or market friendly. This is of more concern because church leadership that lacks discernment can be more potentially hazardous to a Christian.

Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

You can rest confidently in God's protection over you. However, you are also to grow in discernment.

Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Magic, in English, can have (at least) two meanings:
a) sorcery, witchcraft - which you are referring to (together with the Bible)
b) charm, something miraculous - its a figure of speech and I guess it was the meaning of the title

Its probably safest to ask the pastor's wife about it, what did she mean.
