Whoops, sorry, I did not notice what board this was on.

Here is a Bible passage for your consideration (instead of my former comment). God is the One speaking.

Isaiah 43

“And My servant whom I have chosen,
In order that you may know and believe Me
And understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed,
And there will be none after Me.
11 “I, even I, am the LORD,
And there is no savior besides Me.”

You do understand that this is statement concerns just this earth. Not of all eternity. Our God is the God of this earth and the heavens that surround it. Could there be other gods, yes, the fourth word in the bible is (in Hebrew) Elohim.

The translators have translated the Hebrew word "Elohim" into the English word "God", even though they have also translated the Hebrew word "EL" or "ELo" or "Eloh" into the English word "God".

The confusion is, the Hebrew word "Elohim". If you were to translate it as it is, it was translate to the English word "Gods". The "im" on the end of Eloh, pluralizes the word Eloh.
Eloh = God, Elohim = Gods.

The translators did not know what to do with the word Elohim, so they translated it God, and that has confused the issue since the beginning.
Why did Moses use "Elohim" in Genesis 1:1 and not Elohim in Genesis 14:18.

I believe the reason is that in Genesis 14:18 Moses refers to "Most High" God. Why would Moses refer to God as the Most High God, when, according to you, he obviously knows there is only 1 God. The Most High God seems to infer that there are Gods many. Just like Elohim would tell us.

Thanks, all of these references have to do with the God of this Earth only. There are no other Gods associated with this Earth and its heavens. So you are right, thank you.

But there are many unanswered questions as to why Moses used the word Gods in his writings? Lots of opinions, no exact answers? Was JS right? Won't know till after we see clearly, where now we see darkly.

Hello Peter, I'm not quite following you here, I'm afraid, and here's why. On the one hand, you said that Mormons teach that this world (these heavens and this earth) have one God only, but on the other hand, you said that the Bible's use of "Elohim" as its 4th word proves that there are MANY Gods. So which is it?

There are many gods, but only 1 true God, the Most High.

"“The name Elohim is unique to Hebraic thinking – it occurs only in Hebrew and in no other ancient Semitic language. The masculine plural ending does not mean “gods” when referring to the true God of Israel, since the name is mainly used with singular verb forms and with adjectives and pronouns in the singular (e.g. see Gen. 1:26).” "
https://www.theopedia.com/elohim

One also needs to consider the frequent use of the singular ’Eloha. For example we find: “s.5” (Deuteronomy 32:15); “You that forgot God [’Eloha]” (Psalms 50:22); “At the presence of the God [’Eloha] of Jacob” (Psalms 114:7). If ’Elohim refers to a triune deity, how can one account for the alternate deployment of ’Elohim and ’Eloha? Isaiah declares: “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer the Lord of hosts: I am the first, and I am the last, and besides Me there is no God [’Elohim]” (Isaiah 44:6).
ONENESS OF GOD - The Meaning of 'Elohim

"
The word Elohim possesses a plural intensive syntax and is singular in meaning. In Hebrew, the suffix ים (im), mainly indicates a masculine plural. However with Elohim the construction is grammatically singular, (i.e. it governs a singular verb or adjective) when referring to the God of Israel, but grammatically plural elohim (i.e. taking a plural verb or adjective) when used of pagan divinities (Psalms 96:5; 97:7).

This is self-evident from the fact that the verb “created” בָּרָה (bara) in Genesis 1:1 is in the singular. This linguistic pattern is well known and widely used throughout the Jewish Scriptures. For example, I am certain that many readers are familiar with the Hebrew word חַיִים (chayim), meaning “life.” Notice that this word contains the identical plural suffix “im,” as inElohim, yet it repeatedly means “life”, in the singular, throughout the Bible. Elohim is actually a plural noun (indicated by the /im/ as in cherubim and seraphim). Sometimes the referent is plural. At other times the referent is singular. Like most words in English, Elohim can mean several things. Sometimes Elohim refers to plural "gods," as in "You shall have no other gods before me" (Deuteronomy 5:7). At other times it refers to the singular "God," as in "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). It is clear in this latter example that even though the form of the word Elohim is plural, the referent is singular, because the verb with which Elohim is used ("created") is singular in Hebrew.
National Association of Scholars - Ask a Scholar: What Does YHWH Elohim Mean? by Mark D. Futato

SINGULAR USAGE. Elohim appears in the Hebrew Bible as a common noun identifying Israel's God: "In the beginning God [elohim ] created [singular verb] the heaven and the earth" (Gen. 1:1). It was also frequently used interchangeably with Jehovah, the proper name for Israel's God: "And Jacob said, O God [elohim ] of my father Abraham,…the Lord [Jehovah] which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country" (Gen. 32:9; see also Jehovah, Jesus Christ).

Henotheism is the belief that many gods exist, yet the worship of only one of these gods is appropriate. A henotheist would admit that many gods may exist and are able to be worshipped. However the henotheist chooses to worship only one of these gods. This sets the henotheist apart from the polytheist who worships many gods.

1 Corinthians 8 J.B. Phillips New Testament (PHILLIPS)
A practical problem: shall we be guided by superior knowledge or love?
8 1a Now to deal with the matter of meat which has been sacrificed to idols.

1b-3 It is not easy to think that we “know” over problems like this, but we should remember that while knowledge may make a man look big, it is only love that can make him grow to his full stature. For whatever a man may know, he still has a lot to learn, but if he loves God, he is opening his whole life to the Spirit of God.

4-13 In this matter, then, of eating meat which has been offered to idols, knowledge tells us that no idol has any real existence, and that there is no God but one. For though there are so-called gods both in heaven and earth, gods and lords galore in fact, to us there is only one God, the Father, from whom everything comes, and for who we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom everything exists, and by whom we ourselves are alive. But this knowledge of ours is not shared by all men. For some, who until now have been used to idols, eat the meat as meat really sacrificed to a god, and their delicate conscience is thereby injured. Now our acceptance of God is not a matter of meat. If we eat it, that does not make us better men, nor are we the worse if we do not eat it. You must be careful that your freedom to eat meat does not in any way hinder anyone whose faith is not as robust as yours. For suppose you with your knowledge of God should be observed eating meat in an idol’s temple, are you not encouraging the man with a delicate conscience to do the same? Surely you would not want your superior knowledge to bring spiritual disaster to a weaker brother for whom Christ died? And when you sin like this and damage the weak consciences of your brethren you really sin against Christ. This makes me determined that, if there is any possibility of meat injuring my brother, I will have none of it as long as I live, for fear I might do him harm.

4 Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that ‘no idol in the world really exists’, and that ‘there is no God but one.’

1 Corinthians 10:20But I am saying that when food is sacrificed to idols, it is an offering to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to share anything with demons.
