I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught. 1 Jn 2:26,27

The footnote in my study Bible says that this means no need for teaching that departs from the gospel message not no need for teaching per se since this letter teaches them.

But the following verse also talks about the teaching that comes from anointing of the "Holy One" (Holy Spirit?) so I wonder if this passage is discussing the role the Holy Spirit plays in "teaching" Christians. I feel the footnote explanation doesn't quite fit the passage. In Jesus' final teaching to the disciples in John's gospel he explains that the Holy Spirit will take His place in "leading them into all the truth".

Of course there are other verses that emphasise the importance of the written scriptures e.g. 2 Tim 3:16. Jesus frequently quoted from the OT in His teaching. References to the scriptures in John's gospel are mostly about fulfilling them rather than teaching from them.

But I wonder if Christians and the Church today don't give enough attention to being taught by the Holy Spirit.

Wonderful edifying thoughts here. My Wycliff Bible Commentary for that verse identifies it as the Holy Spirit.

And in verse 20 before it says this:

1 John 2:20
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things

I find that it is the Holy Spirt your verses are referring to and it has been one of my studies for a short while and I thank you for including the verses in 1 John.

Glad to be of help at all Jamesone5

I agree eleos1954 that there is an interaction between the written scriptures and the Holy Spirit for the teaching of Christians: you can't have one without the other!

But with all our versions, commentaries, interlinears etc. (though the NT believers did have the advantage of knowing the original languages and the contextual setting) we can forget the Holy Spirit's input.

Another verse that might have relevance is "the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God" in Eph 6. I was reading something a while ago and it said that sword is feminine, Spirit is neuter and "which" is neuter! That made me sit up. I think the grammar means that it is the Spirit which is the word of God in that verse. The online interlinear confirms this.

I love the upper room discourse to HIS disciples...

Those words spoken are for HIS disciples, yesterday, today...and tomorrow:

John 16:

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

16A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

Here is what that passage means to those of us who live centuries after the KJV was written...

“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

Notice that "... because I go to the Father" is in all translations in verse 15:10, not in 16a.

But I wonder if Christians and the Church today don't give enough attention to being taught by the Holy Spirit.

Context context context.

"Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrsits have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us." - 1 John 2:18-19

St. John here speaks of heretics, antichrists, who began as members of the Church but because of their heresies have departed from the truth, going on their own way preaching their heresies.

"But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth." - ibid 20-21

John is confident that his readers are committed to the truth which they received from the beginning, the word that they heard from the beginning, the Gospel, the true faith, they are not ignorant of it, but know it, and are faithful.

"Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that He made to us--eternal life." - ibid. 22-25

See here that John gives more clarity to who these heretical antichrists are, they are these who have come to deny that Jesus is the Messiah who has come in the flesh (a double attack against both Docetism and Cerinthianism, two ancient Gnostic or proto-Gnostic heresies). These heresies are at odds with the orthodox faith which John's readers have heard, believed, confessed, and abide in.

"I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie--just as it has been taught you, abide in Him." - ibid. 26-27

So we see that John is not saying that his readers do not depend upon the teaching of the faith which they had received from the beginning because of an "anointing"; but rather that the anointing they have received, as members of the Body of Christ, sealed in Christ by the Spirit by their Baptism, they abide in the true faith of the Church, in what has been given to them from the beginning. They have therefore heard and received, believed and confessed, and continue to profess and abide in the truth of God's word; on this account they can rely on what they have heard and believed already and are in no need to hear the teachings of these heretics who are leading them off to deception and wayward doctrines.

What St. John is saying is not that each individual Christian is taught individually by the Spirit and so is in no need to heard and receive instruction on the truth from the Church which preaches and confesses the word of God; but that as believing and confessing members of the Church, held in true faith by the Holy Spirit, they can trust in what they have already heard and received. They can depend upon the word of their salvation which they have already believed, and not go chasing the empty and vain teachings of heretics.

And John also makes the distinction between those who ¨Went out from us¨ as those who have progressed above the HEAD and the TRUTH...who is CHRIST...and by their going out, make manifest that they never were with us....

Keep ever before you what you began in...if what you began in, remains in you...you too will remain in both THE FATHER and THE SON...and this is what HE promised us...even Eternal Life...

Do you think this was my meaning? It certainly was not my intention to state that believers should not "depend upon the teaching of the faith" or that individual Christians have "no need to hear and receive instruction in the truth ..."
If you do think that is what I meant please state your basis i.e. the words I have written previously in this thread.

Not accusing you of anything, simply attempting to nip an erroneous notion at the bud.

There is an idea, present within a number of modern Christian circles, and which I've seen promoted many times here on CF, that we shouldn't rely on the historic teaching of the Church, or on biblical exegesis and scholarship, but instead that the Holy Spirit personally enlightens, reveals, and illuminates our understanding. So that if we pray really hard God will personally teach us the truth.

This usually results in people claiming God personally told them something, and that the problem with everyone else is that they aren't listening to God.

But it is important to understand that when Christ said "The Spirit will lead you to all truth" He wasn't speaking to me or you, He was speaking to His Apostles as a group. Thus it is the apostolic teaching, as preserved in Scripture and received in the Church that is trustworthy. The truth, therefore, is not the special possession of any single human being, but is the common possession of the Christian Church, it is what has been heard and believed since the beginning--the Gospel.

It's not an either/or situation. You're starting with an assumption that I disagree with. Are you really trying to say that the Holy Spirit can't "speak" to individuals? Apparently the Spirit hasn't spoken to you directly or, through lack of faith, you didn't hear Him.

Matthew 1:8, "I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 10:19, " Whenever they hand you over for trial, do not worry about how to speak or what to say, for what you should say will be given to you at that time. For it is not you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Matthew 12:31, "For this reason I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

Mark 3:29, "But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sin"

Mark 12:36, "David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said, ‘The Lord said to my lord,Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”

Luke 1:15, "for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth."

Luke 1:35, "
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God."

Luke 1:41, "When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1:67, "Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied,

Luke 2:25-27, "Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon who was righteous and devout, looking for the restoration of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. So Simeon, directed by the Spirit, came into the temple courts, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what was customary according to the law."

Luke 11:13, "If you then, although you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!

Luke 12:10, "And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the person who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

John 1:33, "And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining—this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

John 3:5-6, "Jesus answered, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. The wind blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

John 14:15-17, "If you love me, you will obey my commandments. Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you.

John 16:7-9, "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment— concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;

John 16:12-16, "“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come. He will glorify me, because he will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you.

Acts 2:1-4, "Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting. And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them."

Acts 2:17-18, "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

Acts 2:38, "Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Acts 4:31, "When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously."

Acts 5:32, "And we are witnesses of these events, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”

Acts 6:3, "But carefully select from among you, brothers, seven men who are well-attested, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this necessary task.

Acts 7:51, “You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors did!"

Acts 8:15-17, "These two went down and prayed for them so that they would receive the Holy Spirit. (For the Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then Peter and John placed their hands on the Samaritans(!), and they received the Holy Spirit."

Acts 9:17, "So Ananias departed and entered the house, placed his hands on Saul and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 10:44-45, "While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were greatly astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles..."

I'm getting tired of this, and I haven't even gotten to the Epistles!

If you believe only in corporate Christianity and that the Holy Spirit can't speak to individuals, may God have mercy on you.

John 16:7-9, "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment— concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;

You seem to have chosen to simply list, ad nauseum, a list of unrelated and unconnected passages of Scripture that mention the Holy Spirit, without any concern or care for what those passages are saying in their context.

Were you under the impression that I don't think we have received the Holy Spirit as God promised? Because I do.

Were you under the impression that I don't think the prophets of old were inspired and worked by the power of the Holy Spirit? Because I do.

Were you under the impression that I don't think the apostles worked and ministered and wrote by the power of the Holy Spirit? Because I do.

But you know what none of the verses you posted say? That I can have special revelation from the Holy Spirit.

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ His only-begotten Son, our Lord.
And in the Holy Spirit.
And in the holy catholic Church.
And in the forgiveness of sins.
And in the resurrection of the body.
And in the life everlasting. Amen.

That's what I believe.

Via Crucis,

You didn't answer my question in post #12 so can I take it that the "erroneous notion" was something you have derived from other sources and not based on anything I wrote. Just to clarify that point.

As for "modern Christian circles" - well, apart from time zones, we all live in the same time period so I find this statement not well defined.

But it is important to understand that when Christ said "The Spirit will lead you to all truth" He wasn't speaking to me or you, He was speaking to His Apostles as a group.
How do you decide which NT teaching only applies to the Apostles and which applies to all Christians? What about the Sermon on the Mount? You and I weren't there. So how do we know that teaching applies to us today? Apparently not from what you wrote above.

The truth, therefore, is not the special possession of any single human being, but is the common possession of the Christian Church
But given the Christian Church consists of individuals how can it come to possess this truth? In the end, one or more members of the Church has to receive it. So who decides who are the genuine receivers and who aren't?

In your #15 you have posed several questions to another poster. Maybe you could answer my questions in your next post.

What do you mean by "special revelation"? Are you thinking of a particular Bible passage?

I am sorry that you persist in unbelief.

I can have special revelation from the Holy Spirit, as can any Christian who has faith in the power of God and believes the Scriptures.

That is what Jesus gave those of us who believe.

John 14:15-17 says, “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. I'm not discussing this any further with you, ViaCrucis. It saddens me that you can't accept this gift from our Lord and Savior.

To everyone else reading this thread, please live by and act upon God's gift to all believers, the Holy Spirit. Please do not persist in unbelief.
