Holy Synod Issues Statement on Recent Tragic Events

The full statement, for those who don't want to click through.

“We, the members of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America, mourn the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd on May 25, 2020. We too have looked with horror at the footage of this episode, and condemn the brutal actions that caused his violent death. We look to the civil authorities to bring to justice those who participated in this senseless tragedy.

“We categorically reject racism in any form. Every human being is created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27), and was created to exist (Wisdom of Solomon 1:14). We are all, each of us, “one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28).” As such, there should be no hatred, no enmity, no hostility between us, but reconciliation.

“In the face of civil unrest, we call upon the members of the Orthodox Church in America, and to all the communities they live in, to engage in the service of righteousness and peace in the Holy Spirit. We exhort everyone to “pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding (Romans 14:17, 19).”

Finally, we offer our prayers to God for Mr. Floyd, his family, and to those communities that are experiencing anxiety, sadness, and despair, because they have seen destruction of life and property.”
Lord have mercy!

Honest question from a European perspective: why does white policeman violence on black victim elicit this sort of response from the OCA, whilst dozens of blacks are killed by blacks in major cities such as Chicago every weekend and the OCA makes no such statement?

I understand the grave injustice of what the four Minneapolis policemen did. But it seems insignificant compared to what happens every weekend in the US and no one from the OCA or anyone seems to notice. Why does a molehill of white on black violence cause riots, whilst a mountain of black on black violence yields indifference?

Not white and not American native but a lot of people set those statements to show they are against "racism" because anytime there is a conflict between whites and blacks that is the accusation.

There’s a huge difference when it involves abuse of power by law enforcement officers.

The purpose of such magnification relative to “same-race” violence is to promote social disorder, the purpose being to change the social order altogether.
Create, promote, and fund anarchy, and the people will eventually lay down their conception of their rights and freedoms and call upon “a strong man” to bring order, any order being better than anarchy. That’s how you get tyranny.

Look at which political side has lost power, and is unlikely to get it back through the regular channels with business as usual.

Evidently, a famous actor (allegedly John Cusack) just said, “I hope the riots continue until T flies away in a helicopter.” That’s not solid proof of anything but a sentiment, but it DOES evidentially point to a kind of thinking, the sort of people that think it, and why they think it.

Criminal violence by criminals is one thing, but criminal violence by law enforcement is quite another. It is impossible to maintain an orderly and just society if the enforcers of order and justice cannot themselves be relied upon to do so.

Since the OCA forms part of the civil society that in a democracy like the USA police officers are supposed to be working for, its hardly surprising they would want to speak out when there are reports of officers abusing their society-given powers. If the OCA was similarly part of a society that paid the salaries of criminal gangsters I'm sure they would speak out against gang violence as well.

That’s helpful.

Perhaps it is akin to a sporting match (the game of life). If you think the other side cheats, you may still show up to play as long as the arbiters are fair.

But if the referees cheat, well, the game is rigged. So why play?
