Not sure what point they are trying to make?
Or, what voters they are trying to win over?
M
My point is that it seems you have brought this up as a criticism. But of what? The protesters who were arrested should receive due process. Who pays for their bail isn’t relevant.

Not sure what point they are trying to make?
Surely you have provided the answer to that in your own post when you note that the contributions were made because the staffers "oppose the practice of making people who are arrested pay money to avoid pre-trial imprisonment".

Or, what voters they are trying to win over?
Perhaps they are simply acting in line with their consciences and beliefs. But if there is a target audience then it is those voters who share those views.

It seems to be a good time in which to leave all of these ones destroying our Cities locked up in jail.

We got to see a little of this up close yesterday a few miles from here. Hope the ones arrested here stay in jail for as long as possible.

On another note.
Also hope that the ex cop that started this gets a long prison sentence ASAP. Maybe then the people will see justice being served.

You act as if making bail is an injustice.

If I knew one of these ones locked up for destroying our town or towns and they asked me to bail them out, I would need to give it much thought first.

No one is asking you. Some others are choosing to do so with their funds for people who are eligible for bail. If someone is a danger deny them bail, if there are eligible for bail what's the issue?

Is it illegal or immoral?

Officials blame differing groups of 'outsiders' for violence

There's a growing consensus that the rioting in several cities is actually being driven by outsiders who are coming into town for the explicit purpose of engaging in violent and illegal actions, but a general disagreement over who these people are and what their goal is.

So if it's true that a major political candidate is posting bail money for these individuals, then that feeds into broader conspiracy theories.

If people want to put money towards others bail - let's them.

I think here the optics for the campaign is what is in question. The speculation machine we call media will bring out all their unnamed sources to feed the public all kinds of theories of why this was either a mistake, or justified.

If you have small mom and pop shops that have been destroyed and their lives ruined by protestors? They, their family and supporters may remember this at the ballot box. Many of my friends are DEM and they are horrified by what is happening...and were texting this morning about Biden's bail. The optics of this didn't seem to go over well.

So, yeah on the surface - your want money towards bail - your right.

Is Biden and his staff opposed to anyone having to pay bail in general? Or is he literally trying to buy votes by paying off people's bail?

The blatant use of slanted questions is of value solely in establishing that your agenda remains unchanged. Always useful to know, so thank you.
  • The views of Biden in the matter are not clearly identified as being the same in this matter as the staffers, so your conjunction of Biden with his staffers was either a careless error, or an attempt at cynical manipulation.
  • We may reasonably infer that the staff are opposed to bail payments in the case of civil protests.
  • You should check the definition of "literally". You, literally (without quotation marks) do not appear to know what it means.

A Biden spokesman has confirmed that Biden is against cash bail in general because it's "a modern debtors prison", which isn't a terribly uncommon position among a lot of progressives.

It is understandable to have that position. Although I don't think it would work out very well in practice. Imagine someone charged with multiple counts of child rape to willingly show up to trial. But do you know of any other situation where Biden or his staff paid someone's bail? I am sorry, but altruistic as it my seem, the whole thing reeks of political pandering.

Biden campaign staffers donate to group that bails out jailed Minneapolis protesters: report

At least 13 members of Joe Biden’s campaign staff have made donations to a group that helps Minneapolis protesters get out of jail on bail, according to a report.

The staffers posted on Twitter that they contributed money to a group called the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which opposes the practice of making people who are arrested pay money to avoid pre-trial imprisonment, Reuters reported.
That’s nice of them!

Do you understand how complex the events were? There were non-violent demonstrators. There were demonstrators prone to disruption and confrontation. There were criminal elements who wanted to use the demonstrations as a cover for looting and weak individuals who were tempted to steal from stores already broken into. There may have even been white supremacist "accelerators" involved. Individuals from all of these different groups were arrested. How do you know that those being bailed were the individuals responsible for the looting and destruction? Or do you even care? The tendency to lump all of those arrested together as "rioting blacks" is one of the reasons there is a problem to begin with.

Well the whole point of bail is to insure somebody shows up for trial. I'm not aware of any research though that size of the bail effects if somebody comes back or not. Somebody like your person charged with multiple counts of child rape probably wouldn't be granted bail, or would be granted house arrest. BUt right now bail doesn't have much to do with flight risk and has everything ot do with how much money somebody has. And especially when you have court cases that can last years, it's unjust.
We don't know if Biden himself donated money to the bail fund or if this was coordinated. And no I don't know of other caes, but this bail fund in particular has become something of a cause celeb for progressives.
