I probably shouldn't answer this since I've never hunted bear in my life. But I've shot 3 black bears. .22 pistol LR; .38-55 Winchester rifle; 10 ga. shotgun.

22LR? Where was your shot placement? How many shots? Did they die?

A real man hunts bears with a knife!

There is a campground near Los Angeles named after a real man!

Considering that bears have 4 "knives" on each paw, I think a gun might be advisable...

I have a photo of an Eskimo and a polar bear he killed with 3 arrows; That's "man" enough for me!

I had inadvertently caught it in a trap and there was nothing else to do. He was pretty ticked. A few shots with the .22 in the body did it.

Inspired by a conversation in another thread, I have questions for bear hunters:

What kind of bears do you hunt?
The spiritual kind, i.e. lusts...?

Quote:
Q: What does it mean that David sang and stopped the evil spirit in Saul?
A: Everyone who, like the blessed David, shepherds the sheep, that is to say the reasoning part of the soul, and is victorious over anger and lust just as he was over the lion and the bear, this same person, by making use of the word of teaching, along with [that of] a certain lofty contemplation, delights the hearer and puts to sleep the passions of wickedness that are in him. - Saint Maximus
What gun and ammo do you use for them?
A cross-shaped slingshot, which is to say, a body crucified with abstinence, charged with fervent prayers to Christ, the spiritual stone (ammo).

:)

Thank you to everyone who answered (or will answer) with ballistic information. I was debating with a guy on the other thread about the relative merits of bear (pepper) spray versus a moderate-power gun.

Although black-bear hunting is very common where I live, I've never done it, and with the regular church services modified, I don't see the local hunters very often lately.

I live in Southern Ontario; and where ever Rifles are allowed for deer, you can use them on black bear. Even when permitted, in Southern Ontario, you are limited to a max cal. of .270. So, where I live, 12 ga. with slugs of 000 buck. .243-270, Black Powder, Bow/Cross bow. 1 1/2 hour north of here; pretty much anything goes. In special circumstances you can get a permit to open carry a hand-gun for bear defense; but that requires special approval, special training and competency test, and a minimum .357 magnum/10 mm (not .40 S & W)cal. Most would chose a short shotgun, but a pistol is more portable.

In the miners museum in Fairbanks Alaska theres a glass case with a grizzly bear skull that belonged to a local bear that was causing problems and had killed a few people...there must be 3 different caliber bullets lodged in skull with little stories about each one...theres 4- 7mm mag bullets lodged in different spots but they never penetrated skull, theres 3 furrows about 4 inches long that were made by 180 grain 30.06's,,, also a fair number of .22's, .38's, .44 mag, .30-30's etc....bear was finally killed by a game warden with a .338 mag. shooting it through shoulders and heart lung area, there is one .338 lodged and flattened in skull, after seeing that and I went and bought an old Winchester mod 70 in .458 mag that an old guide had traded for a lighter recoiling .338...never left the cabin without it, and never used on a bear...

There also have been a lot of improvements made in projectile design; solid coppers for dangerous game, and pistol bullets designed for penetration available now that were not even 10 years ago. Surplus Tokarev 7.62 x .25 with steel core would be a great defensive round for bear. We had to ban them at the range as they were cutting gouges in our 45 degree armor back stop.

I had the serbian version of a Tokarev, a Zastava M-57. I sold it for three reasons; I found I was unable to shoot it accurately, it was not approved for competion, and I knew we were going to ban the cheap, surplus ammo on our indoor range. It was fun though, as it recoiled more than a .357, blew a cloud of fire with each shot, and everyone on the range felt the concussion!! Pistol worked great too, 100 % for feeding and extracting, and beautifully made!

A lot of people bow hunt bears as well... it doesn't have to be firearms.

Nothing against bow hunters, but the rate of lost game is higher with bow than with rifle or shotgun. To their credit, most bow hunters are now careful enough not to take shots that are questionable. When a bow season was first established here in Ontario; gun guys were buying bows and cross-bows to extend their season, and were shooting them like shot guns at shot gun ranges. Things are much better now.

We've got bow season here for bear hunting, but I don't know how many missed shots (leaving injury) there are..

I only know about this sort of thing because my husband talks about game laws in this state when he comes across information that to me would be new... (I'm not from here, and used to hunt deer in my previous state some when I was younger, so hunting is something we talk about from time to time... )

But it's interesting what you said... I wouldn't think anyone would go out for bow hunting without proficiency...

Thats what I get for thinking.. lol
