Matthew 3:11. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Luke 3:16. John answered, saying to all, I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The disciples of Jesus Christ were baptized with the Holy Spirit.
They laid hands on
new converts who received the Holy Spirit.
The baptism of fire, what is it? When does it occur?
Historic mistranslation. Correction:

"He will baptize you with the Holy Wind and Fire."

as fulfilled on Pentecost (at least for the disciples):

"Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven...They saw what seemed to be tongues of Fire...They were all filled with the Holy [Wind]"

This is because God is actually a physical being and thus not a "spirit", as I demonstrated on threads such as these:
God Is a Physical Being
Why God is Worthy of Our Praise
The Problem of Evil

You're assuming that "spirit" is the correct translation. Refuted accross a series of posts on the first of those threads - posts 34, 38, 43, 51, 61, 116 on this thread:
God Is a Physical Being
Sorry I believe in KJV want nothing to do with vatican scrolls.

Huh? Vatican? I'm not Catholic, for one thing and, for another, Catholics do believe that God is a spirit.
Every other English translation use two scrolls from vatican.

"He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire"

"Our GOD is a consuming fire"

Believers are baptized by God. We don't need to fear being burned by His refining fire. Think the book of Daniel. Unbelievers do not get baptized, so I'm not sure where that's coming from.

The baptism of fire, what is it? When does it occur?

For God's elect, it occurs now in this life.
For the rest of humanity, it occurs in the lake of fire.

The baptism of fire is our constant purification.

Peter said in one of his letters that judgment starts with the house of God in that sense.

It is a constant immersion.

In terms of keeping that fire or "saltiness" Jesus said in Mark that we are to make and keep peace with one another.

The baptism of fire, what is it? When does it occur?

There are two interpretations which I think are possible.

1) The "baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire" is a singular reference to the outpouring of the Spirit on Pentecost, with fire referring to the tongues of fire describes in the 2nd chapter of the Acts.

2) The "fire" refers to another "baptism", that is a "baptism" of trial, of endurance--it refers to the suffering which the Church endures in this world.

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

Is this the fire that will try everyone's works? On That Day?

1 Corinthians 3:15
. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved,
yet so as through fire.

Will anything pass through the fire, but the fruit of the Spirit?

The dross, tares, chaff, wood, hay and stubble will NOT pass through the Fire. God is a refiner, and He burns away all that is not acceptable to Him. These things are not classes of people, for we all have dross, etc. within us, goats and sheep alike.

Back in the day there was an auto shop commercial advising owners to keep up the maintenance on their car. The tag line was "you can pay me now, or you can pay me later".
1 Peter 4:1, 2. Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
2 Corinthians 7:1. Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

We can walk in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, 'abide in Him', trust in the Father's sovereignty-that all things work together and reap a reward, or be unfruitful and suffer loss in the baptism of fire.
1 Corinthians 3:11-15.
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is.
If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.
If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved,
yet so as through fire.

1 John 3:1-3.
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

The Day of the Lord 2 Peter 3:
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Revelation 21:1. Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.

Luke 12:49 (WEB) “I came to throw fire on the earth. I wish it were already kindled. 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, no, but rather division. 52 For from now on, there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

If you hold to truth, you might find opposition from those supporting false ideologies, yet you should find peace from God.

Having said all these things, the question that I have is this:
Is "the last day" spoken of by the Lord = "the day of the Lord".

John 6:39, 40. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.
And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

The Day of the Lord 2 Peter 3:
10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Matthew 24:13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Definition of Ore Refining by Fire

A prospector friend put crushed copper-gold ore in a crucible, then into a small backyard blast furnace. The mixture melted in the crucible. After it cooled, the slag was at the top of the crucible and a metal lump was at the bottom. The crucible was broken with a hammer. He hit the vitreous slag with a hammer and recovered the metal lump. A further refining process extracted a yellow button from the mixed metal lump.

Not sure if this is of any use to you, only offering a definition of refining and dross.
