Republican flips House seat in California special election

Democratic state Assemblywoman Christy Smith on Wednesday conceded defeat in the special election in California’s 25th District after vote returns showed her opponent, Republican Mike Garcia, with a comfortable lead.

The concession flips a seat that Democrats reclaimed from GOP control less than two years ago. The special election was held on Tuesday to fill the seat vacated last fall by former Rep. Katie Hill (D-Cailf.), who resigned amid a House ethics investigation into an inappropriate relationship between her and one of her congressional staffers.

Garcia’s apparent win is a major accomplishment for the GOP, marking the first time since 1998 that a Republican has flipped a Democratic-held House seat in California.

Republicans also won a special House election in Wisconsin on Tuesday, in a race they were widely expected to win.
Shades of what November will look like? Possibly

Ummmmm.....this is a seat which was held by the 'red team' for the previous 25 years. Hill won it against the odds as part of the 'blue wave'. She is then found to be involved in a sex/drugs/Nazi tattoo scandal and is forced to resign after holding the seat for less than a year. The seat has remained vacant since last November...!

Is there anyone seriously wondering why it wouldn't have flipped back under these circumstances....!?

Good grief...

Not even regular sex either. Quite the trifecta.

I'm not sure it's a sign of anything since the seat had JUST flipped to blue when Congresswoman hill won it in 2018, and was red for 23 years before that.

Sounds like the blue seat win in 2018, was the result of additional "illegal" ballots cast or incorrect counting to me.
Just my thoughts!

Maybe the California GOP should put you on the board of Elections? You seem “impartial”.

Katie Hill won by 22000 votes and almost 9 percentage points. It's one thing to say it was a fluke, but there is absolutely no reason to suspect that the win wasn't legit. And i'm keeping an eye on this seat. This was a special election in a pandemic. Only diehard voters tend to vote in special elections to begin with.

These Kinda thoughts, without direct evidence to support them, are conspiratorial and useless to rational discourse

With evidence however....

That's if there are enough republicans left in the state to push any kind of meaningful change forward. There have been droves of conservatives leaving the states for years now. Every effort thus far to split the state in order to allow the people to be properly represented has failed miserably. Of course, I don't think I have seen any kind of serious effort on that front though. The last one was just ridiculous.
