With that in mind, how would one define prophecy today?

Giving warnings and correction to a body would make sense.

How can you ignore passages that talk about prophecy as a gift of foretelling. Yes, it also means warnings and corrections. But to say prophecy is those things without it speaking of future events is not correct.

"Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good."
-1 Thess. 5:19-21

NM. "As it pertains to scripture." I would agree there, however.

Hebrews 1 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
God Has Spoken Through His Son
1 In the past God spoke to our people through the prophets. He spoke to them many times and in many different ways. 2 And now in these last days, God has spoken to us again through his Son.

My position is all gifts are for today Eph 4.

The point purpose of this thread is to discuss how prophecy plays out today. Based on "in these days, God has spoken to us again through his Son." which puts an end to what is known as "progressive revealation".

Which would raise the questions of what types of prophecy are vaid for today? That does not add to Scriptures?

"
Progressive revelation is the teaching that God has revealed Himself and His will through the Scriptures with an increasing clarity as more and more of the Scriptures were written. In other words, the later the writing the more information is given. Therefore, God reveals knowledge in a progressive and increasing manner throughout the Bible from the earliest time to later time. This makes perfect sense since we know that not everything God revealed to us was revealed right away.

This does not mean that earlier sections of Scripture are of inferior quality or are not as inspired as latter revelations."
What is progressive revelation and is it scriptural? | CARM.org

"During the second century, the heretic Marcion questioned the church’s received canon of Scripture. Marcion belonged to the Gnostic movement, which among other things taught that the God revealed in the Old Testament, Yahweh, is different from the God revealed in the New Testament, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In so doing, Marcion and the other Gnostics set the new covenant Scriptures against the old covenant Scriptures such that the New Testament contradicted the Old Testament."
Progressive Revelation

"
The things that God revealed to humanity were not all given at once. His revelation was given in stages. This is known as progressive revelation. The Apostle Paul wrote.

Now to the One who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith (Romans 16:24,25)."

written about 379 CE

"22. Great indeed, and all-powerful in gifts, and wonderful, is the Holy Ghost. Consider, how many of you are now sitting here, how many souls of us are present. He is working suitably for each, and being present in the midst, beholds the temper of each, beholds also his reasoning and his conscience, and what we say, and think, and believe. Great indeed is what I have now said, and yet is it small. For consider, I pray, with mind enlightened by Him, how many Christians there are in all this diocese, and how many in the whole province of Palestine, and carry forward your mind from this province, to the whole Roman Empire; and after this, consider the whole world; races of Persians, and nations of Indians, Garbs and Sarmatians, Gauls and Spaniards, and Moors, Libyans and Ethiopians, and the rest for whom we have no names; for of many of the nations not even the names have reached us. Consider, I pray, of each nation, Bishops, Presbyters, Deacons, Solitaries, Virgins, and laity besides; and then behold their great Protector, and the Dispenser of their gifts;— how throughout the world He gives to one chastity, to another perpetual virginity, to another almsgiving, to another voluntary poverty, to another power of repelling hostile spirits. And as the light, with one touch of its radiance sheds brightness on all things, so also the Holy Ghost enlightens those who have eyes; for if any from blindness is not vouchsafed His grace, let him not blame the Spirit, but his own unbelief." "(2) Prophecy, the gift of knowing and being able to manifest things hidden from the ordinary knowledge of man. "There were in the church which was at Antioch prophets and doctors, among whom was Barnabas, and Simon who was called Niger, and Lucious of Cyrene, and Manahen . . . and Saul" (Acts 13:1). Agabus "signified by the Spirit, that there would be a great famine over the whole world, which came to pass under Claudius" (Acts 11:28). Philip the evangelist "had four daughters, virgins, who did prophesy" (Acts 21:8-9). These prophets were at times allowed to know and reveal the secrets of hearts (1 Corinthians 14:24, 25); they spoke "that all may learn, and all may be exhorted" (1 Corinthians 14:31), which implies that they were enlightened in the Faith above their fellows. Their gift was not a permanent one: for while one prophet was speaking a sudden revelation might come "to another sitting" and then the speaker must "hold his peace" (1 Corinthians 14:30). The object of prophecy was to speak "to men unto edification, and exhortation, and comfort" (ibid., 3, 4). Paul ranks this charisma above all others: "be zealous for spiritual gifts; but rather that you may prophesy" (1 Corinthians 14:1). "For greater is he that prophesieth, than he that speaketh with tongues. . ." (ibid., 5). It appears to have been so frequent in the early Church as to be considered a special, although extraordinary, office. At Antioch "prophets and doctors" are linked together (Acts 13:1), and "God indeed hath set some in the church; first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly doctors . . ." (1 Corinthians 12:28; cf. Ephesians 4:11). In the course of time prophecy became less common, without, however, ever disappearing altogether."

The prophetic dimension you describe needs a relatively "active" appreciation by the other Christians, so that they can discern its benefit and not put the "prophetic personality" on a pedestal by virtue of cachet.

Does it call to prayer?

A Prophecy can call one to pray.
A Prophecy that exposes sin can cause a person to pray.
A Prophecy sends information to people or a group.

For a long time, I always thought when it came to prophesying, it had to do with future events. One night, last year, the Lord lead me to examine the definition of this word. It came to my attention, it does not have anything to do with future events only. Its to do with God revealing his thoughts, that need to be heard, according to scripture and His truth. There are times we think we know God well, and are acting according to his will, but may be blinded by the world. Prophecies are insight, directly given from God. Shining a light on his word, which we do not see with our hearts. It can be a simple message of love, which someone needs to hear, in that very instant it is revealed to you.

Studying old testament prophets, should help us to see the types of prophecies or words from God, they were lead to speak and share with others.

Hi Friend in Christ, what you are describing is illumination. What we think is coming from God should be tested by reading a passage in context. Often this involves how to apply God's Word to our life.

"Biblical illumination is the process by which the Holy Spirit helps a person to understand the truth of God's Word. Illumination is often discussed alongside related concepts of biblical inspiration and interpretation. Inspiration involves how God has revealed spiritual truth; interpretation involves our study of spiritual truth; illumination involves our understanding of spiritual truth and involves both the Scriptures and the influence of the Holy Spirit." What is biblical illumination?

Thank You,
Daniel

Blessings to you brother, for sharing your response, and the link. I actually never heard of the term "biblical illumination" before. This will be a joyous study, to help grow, as a believer in Christ.

God bless,
Azim

Go back and read it word by word, and you will see that in no place whatsoever does your scripture say that "progressive revelation" has ended. That false notion is just man's efforts at controlling God's gifts

Prophecy means declaring, speaking forth. To be useful in whatever time it is spoken.

Progressive revelation is intended to occur without end. There is evidence of progressive revelation in that there is the old testament and a new testament.
How odd that God who reveals to someday quit revealing.. that there would come a time in eternity to be nothing more to learn from an infinite and all knowing God..

However, the apostle Paul said that in the ages to come God will still be showing us many things.

Whether revelation is by prophecy in our time or by the glorified Lord Jesus in the Millennium and beyond will be considered to be scripture, is another thing entirely.
