Where Jesus says the Laodiceans are "lukewarm" > Revelation 3:14-22 > He says they were saying that they are rich because of having a lot in this life.

But Jesus says >

"Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses." (in Luke 12:15)

So, I consider that Jesus means it is lukewarm to let our happiness and contentment depend on how much material things we have in this life, and whether or not our physical needs are met. We need to first desire and depend on God, and appreciate sharing with one another as His family; and this needs to be why we are content.

Pastors always associate it with behaving in a way that expresses a lack of enthusiasm or unwillingness to completely commit, as opposed to being 'on fire for the Lord.'

Do you live like you believe God loves you? :)
With this, I think of how God does love us unconditionally and as His very own children.

And ones can claim this, but keep living selfishly, claiming that because God loves them unconditionally they can keep on being vile and sinning but they will go to Heaven. So, being lukewarm could mean how someone supposes that being loved by God means the person can live any way he or she pleases.

But how God love us unconditionally is our example, required also of us!

"And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." (Ephesians 5:2)

Lukewarn can mean many things according to someone's walk. For me, I had one foot in the world and the other in God's world. I learned that you cannot serve two masters as Jesus once put it: Matthew 6:24. You have to choose which one to completely follow. In my earlier days, I was half-hearted which is lukewarmness.

Another example (and a very good one) is from Revelation 3, letter to Laodicea which means Just People or Justified. When Jesus Christ is saying cold or hot, He means be pure (cold) or be passionate (hot) about Him. Be clean as Living Water and/or be a blazing Fire for the Lord; the Light that resides within us.

Revelation 3:17-18
Instead of relying on Christ they turned and relied on their richness of things in the flesh, vanity. If you read their history, God actually turned their cold water system into lukewarm water - physically telling them that is how He sees them because of what's in their heart. They don't realize how they appear to God: pitiable, blind, naked, and poor.

God then tells them to buy gold refined by fire which is to be tested and tried in the fire for our faith in Jesus Christ, so that we may become rich in Spiritual matters and be purified in His sight. To wear the white garment which is symbolic to wearing the pureness of Christ.
Because the Laodiceans sold eye salve, God ironically tells them to buy from Him eye salve so that they may see and understand the Spiritual things of God.

These things certainly reflect those who are in the world, believing in Christ, but not following Him. This I had to repent of some years ago, and even I had no idea until I fully surrendered to Christ and made the decision to follow Him with every fibre of my being. Everything Christians do ought to be in the faithfulness of Christ because without Him, we aren't able to do anything: John 15:5.

what are sign of lukeewarness

“Halfhearted Christians are worse than infidels; for their deceptive words and noncommittal position lead many astray. The infidel shows his colors. The lukewarm Christian deceives both parties. He is neither a good worldling nor a good Christian.”

To be lukewarm means to halt “between two opinions” (1 Kings 18:21), to try to serve “two masters” (Matthew 6:24), to be “sitting on the fence.” The Lord calls us today to make our decision. He says: “Be zealous . . . , and repent” (Revelation 3:19), and to be “hot” (faithful Christians) so that we may not be spewed out of the Lord’s mouth.

Be "all in" for Jesus .. if not ... then .... at best one is luke warm.

Hot not to be luke warm - study the life of Jesus and pattern yourself after Him ... walk in His steps.

1 John 2:6
Berean Literal Bible
The one claiming to abide in Him ought also walk just as in the same way that He walked.

John 13:15
I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.

Talk the talk .... and walk the walk.

Follow the Lamb.

If you truly knew how much you were loved by God and how precious you were to Him you would stop all self destructive behavior.

Well, truly knowing would not be only a theoretical belief thing, but truly knowing comes with how God proves Himself in us . . . including by how God deeply is correcting us, among other things . . . since He does so love His children > Hebrews 12:4-14 < and therefore corrects us.

And how He is in His love "in our hearts" (Romans 5:5) is our example which we actually experience . . . knowing by actual experience how His love in us is, and therefore how He desires for us to become in loving any and all people, in this all-loving love.

So, lukewarm could mean if I am mainly or only about how much God loves me, while I do not particularly care much about anyone else.

"For of you love those who love you, what reward have you?" Jesus warns in Matthew 5:46.

So, being lukewarm could include if I am satisfied as long as I can use people for what I want. And I might be merely loving the ones I can use.

I agree. :)

How you love others is a tell tale sign of how "knowing" you are of God's love.

Loving yourself is the first step. You can only begin to extend agape love (self sacrificial love) when you are first filled yourself.

You can only begin to extend agape love (self sacrificial love) when you are first filled yourself.
And this includes becoming able to live with "rest for your souls," for one example (Matthew 11:28-30) so we can help and minister for others to rest in and share with Jesus and one another.

But one who is lukewarm might be depending on having things and control and people to use. So, the person is not depending on Christ in His rest and peace; and so the person can be stressed and depressed and frustrated, deeply, and/or nasty and angry and pushy and stubborn, trying to get and possess things and people of this life.

So indeed I first need to find out how to love unconditionally and in submission to how God guides me, so I can help others to do this.

what are sign of lukeewarness
I preached on this recently, here is a section of my notes on the topic: (note some of it is shorthand, but you can get the idea)

  • COLD
    • wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked… and being aware of it
      • May not care... may not feel worthy… may be addicted
  • HOT
    • Blessed, righteous, anointed, and zealous for God
  • LUKEWARM
    • Thinking you are HOT, pretending you are HOT… but in reality being COLD

    • Lukewarm then is outward appearance of being “hot” while inward state of being “cold”

    • Believing I'm good with God, while avoiding dealing with my issues
  • LUKEWARM says what can God do for me

  • HOT says what does God desire from me
  • It is better to know and admit that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked COLD than hide it from the world AND yourself

    • Why? Because acknowledging it is the first step to overcoming it
  • *Which one then, do you think the devil would actually prefer? COLD or LUKEWARM?

    • LUKEWARM is MUCH harder to get through to

what are sign of lukeewarness

Lukewarm is a play on words describing the Christians of the Church at Laodicea in Asia Minor. There was a hot spring about 20 or so miles from the city and an aqueduct had been built to transport water from the spring to the city. BUt by the time the water got there it was no longer hot. Since it was not hot enough for a bath, but not cold enough to drink, it was lukewarm and considered not much good for anything.

Revelation 3:16 uses the analogy of the water of Laodicea to describe the Church there.

"“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.

“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth."

It begins "I know your works". The works of Christianity are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and tend to the sick. The Laodiceans had begun neglecting those works and were referred to as "lukewarm", being neither cold nor hot, i.e., good for nothing. Just as lukewarm water would be spit out, the Laodiceans were to be spit out as well.
