Because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will keep you from the hour of temptation, which shall come on all the world, to try them that dwell on the earth.
Our meditation and our prayer needs to be to keep the word of the Lord’s patience. If the Lord had said keep my commandment that you love one another we would all have nodded. But He didn’t say that, so what is the word of His patience? We know that love is patient. But keeping this commandment to love, to love your enemies, not just with lip service but by lending to them knowing you won’t get anything back especially to be kind to the ungrateful and wicked, this takes patience. He told us that we were blessed when we were persecuted for the sake of righteousness and when we were insulted with false reports and all kinds of evil against you. This is a word of His patience. You could never be the church of brotherly love if you didn’t keep His word to forgive your brother 70 times 7 times. The Lord told us that there are two great commandments, to Love God with all our heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves. The standard is to love as Jesus has loved us. It is a command, it is His word of patience that we must keep. The evidence that you love the Lord is that you obey Him. Jesus was the pioneer of our salvation, and He was made perfect through what he suffered. Because the church in Philadelphia kept His word of patience they too are made perfect through what they suffered. This is how He brings many sons and daughters to glory. If you love the Lord you will obey Him to take up your cross and follow Him to Golgotha. This is the word of His patience that the church in Philadelphia kept. They obeyed Him and He became the source of their salvation. This is how we become perfect. For us to be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect is also the word of His patience. We are weak, we know that, but there is no reason to fear that this will disqualify us. The Lord’s power is made perfect in weakness. The trial tests our faith in the Lord’s power, not ours. James 5:3 “ knowing that the trial of your faith works patience and let patience have her perfect work”, Peter 1:6-7 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
