ROME - Since Pope Francis began livestreaming his daily Mass from the Vatican’s Santa Marta residence, many people around the world have been grateful for the opportunity to hear the pope’s words and to participate, albeit virtually, in his liturgy, helping to break the isolation of the coronavirus quarantine.

Tuesday morning, however, probably no one was more grateful than Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

I understand it's frustrating I'm praying for your health and everybody else's.

But perspective during the plague of 1576 Saint Charles Borromeo agreed and actually was the one who proposed a quarantining of the city for 40 days. it was eventually extended to all clergy and lasted from October until the end of December.

He had clergy celebrating masses at portable altars at crossroads so people could observe from their windows.

With great sorrow that year Milan could not go to mass on Christmas.

The Saint himself tended to the poor. Boiling his clothes, having Eucharistic processions 3 meters apart between people, carrying coins for beggars in jars of vinegar so they were disinfected.

The Church has been through this kind of thing before but it is always frustrating and painful for her people.

My prayer is that the absence of physically receiving the Eucharist helps to create great saints out of an increased desire.
