Your making strawman arguments dear friend...
Your kind of all over the place here dear friend my...
And you are being derisively accusatory without warrant. Please correct and amend this practice if you wish to continue.

Which was replied with.. Before the written Word of God there was the spoken Word of God...
Yes, but the specified context of the discussion was the Law of Moses and the prophets and the Law of Moses and prophets is written. Abraham precedes the written word. That's why I cited him. So my inquiry was not, in fact, answered or addressed.

Yahshua is the living Torah!

If we walk in his ways; we walk in the Torah.
If Yahshua is the living Torah...Then believe in Him...tell him to come into your heart and lead you to him...
Acquire His Spirit first Hark... No one can come to me unless the Father enable them...seek first thing first...

Hello LGW, yes Jesus is the living Word of God. So let us hear him from his own breath..love one another... that's all because the one who love knows God and God lives in them. Simple...even an ordinary man can understand it and follow it.

Indeed dear friend, he also says on these two great commandments of love to God and man hang all the law and the prophets *MATTHEW 22:36-40. Love is not separated from God's LAW it is the power of God written in the heart to establish and fulfill God's LAW in all those who believe God's Word *HEBREWS 8:10; ROMANS 13:8-10; JAMES 2:8-12; 1 JOHN 5:3-4; ROMANS 3:31.

God bless

Actually the scriptures your providing do not say or support the idea anywhere that I can see that a knowledge of God's LAW is not required to understand what sin is.
That would be the exact opposite of what I posted. Paul argued all men know of God. Furthermore, scripture as a whole tells us there are at least five ways to know of God:

  • Creation
  • The moral code written on the human heart
  • The written word
  • The incarnate word
  • The separate (holy) Spirit

In no way shape or form was I suggesting a knowledge of God's is not required to understand sin. I will, however, expand "God's Law" far beyond the Mosaic Code. God's law begins in Genesis 1:28 and 2:17 and is summarized in what Paul calls, "the law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2): be obedient or you'll die.

The problem is since Genesis 3:7 all humanity has lived in a state of estrangement. We are estranged from God, estranged from ourselves, estranged from others, and estranged from the creation we once ruled over with authority by divine command or..... law.

When we correctly understand "God's Law" we necessarily understand all law is God's law. There are many imposters; many things that go by the label "law" but they are not, in fact, law as the scriptures assert the term because the scriptures inform us the measure of the law is the Creator. It is a singular measure. It is an external measure. He is an almighty, all-knowing, all-encompassing measure.

Which means caution is warranted when discussing what is and isn't "fit for purpose" when and where. When Paul and James were writing of the law as a failed and facile means for justification and righteousness they were not saying anything new. Paul makes this clear when he references the OT precept: the righteous shall live by faith. Logic tells us works can never reach God. Finite works by a finite creature can never reach the Infinite Creator. We don't need the Tanakh or the Bible to otells us this because it is a matter of logical necessity. This is how and why Christianity alone is Truth. All other religions are built on works.

I mentioned earlier the fact that nearly everything Jesus taught can be found in the OT. We see this repeatedly in his use of "You have heard it said....." He then quotes the OT and then provides the correct understanding of that OT text. Jesus didn't so much as teach new or anew as he taught restored. Jesus taught the original meaning and truth of the Law and the prophets. Paul, James, and Peter did the same.

The law is no good as a means of attaining justification and/or righteousness but it remains viable - when correctly understood - as a means of understanding moral conduct and the Holy Spirit, the "Law of the Spirit," will never be found to contradict rightly understood whole scripture.

Then focus on that Love...ask these questions; where can I find it? How can I find it? Then you will start a new journey to find it.
Both the law and Prophets are witnesses of Gods Righteousness...just witnesses they cannot give you this Righteousness but point you to it. That Righteousness has already appeared then you can go to him.

Oh goodness. Scripture please.. you mean God never wanted a King?
@Kaon

ISRAEL ASKED FOR THE LAW; IT WAS NOT GOD'S FIRST CHOICE

There were roughly three types of covenant in Moses' era. First, a Grant Covenant which is between a greater and a lesser party where the greater takes on all the obligations while the lesser simply receives the covenant. Second, a Kinship Covenant is between two equal parties such as a marriage where each party has a small set of obligations (also called a parity covenant). Third, a Vassal Covenant where the greater one's ability to destroy the lesser forces the lesser into slavery, tribute etc. (also called a suzerain covenant). -- To learn more just look up each of these on wikipedia.

When a covenant was made between two parties they would write and sign the covenant and it would be legal and binding. Over the time the covenant existed they would add a canon; that is the history of how the two parties walked together in covenant through things such as poetry, music, art etc. This is all in the history.

Because the Mosaic Covenant had obligations from both parties -- the Israelites as one party and God as the other, it most resembles a Kinship Covenant (see here for further reading, slightly off topic but helpful). But due to Israel's inability to remain faithful it morphed into a Vassal Covenant.

The canon of scripture for the Kinship Mosaic Covenant is quite large, it includes Exodus; Numbers; Leviticus and the canon for the Vassal Mosaic Covenant is recorded in Deuteronomy (please go and look into all of this yourself). Because the Kinship Mosaic canon is so long I'll skip over Exodus 1-18 and begin at Mount Sinai. [Note that there was a minimum of 2900 years prior to the Law being given, while the time between Moses and Jesus was around 1300 years. Thus there was twice as long a time without the law than with the law before Jesus. Another thing to remember is how Paul says the Law kills in 2 Corinthians 3:6 which we see in the pattern of death and punishment following Exodus 19 and 20 that did not exist beforehand.]

With that extremely brief prelude out of the way, let's get into the heart of the matter. Before the Kinship Covenant, God initiated a Grant Covenant:

"Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”” (Exodus 19:3-6)

God offered divine protection and everyone would have access to God as priests. Wisely the people responded:

" “We will do everything the Lord has said.” " (Exodus 19:8)

In Exodus 19:9-13 God explains how to prepare for the covenant ceremony. Following this God descended on the mountain and spoke with Moses. But we are only getting part of the story. The rest of the story is recorded in Deuteronomy 5. I encourage you to read Exodus 19 and Deuteronomy 5 beside each other a few times to really see what's going on here. Most important is Deuteronomy 5:23-27:

When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders came to me. And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them. But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer. For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived? Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says. Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”

The people got scared and didn't want to go near God. They asked Moses to go near and have God tell Moses so that they can listen to Moses and obey. Their slave-minded fear desired rules over relationship. They desired Laws to follow rather than being priests to God. Moses remained the mediator between them and God so they could no longer be priests of a Grant Covenant. Instead they wanted the Kinship Covenant and rules to follow.

The giving of the Ten Commandments is a Kinship Ceremony. Rather than God making every person a priest, a holy nation, and a treasured posession it is the record of a Kinship Ceremony. Anyone in the ancient world would have understood this to be a shift from Grant to Kinship. God's first priority was a Grant Covenant. But Israel, out of fear, desired a Kinship Covenant so they didn't need to go near God.

This is not really controversial Christian theology, but the theology of Christ and His apostles. I'm placing it here in this forum because of the threads that MAY bring those who belong to Christ back under bondage to the Law, if those who belong to Christ are not wide awake to them.

Exo 24:3 "And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD has said will we do."

Exo 24:7-8 "And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD has said will we do, and be obedient.

And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you concerning all these words."

The elect had to make a promise of value in that covenant, therefore it was considered God's marriage-contract with Israel, and God (the "husband") promised Israel abundance of blessing in the land IF they obeyed ALL that God had commanded though Moses - but curses and exile from the land if they disobeyed - and because they are incapable of obeying, all that the law brings is curses and death.

Also, a marriage covenant is only "everlasting" until the 'wife' breaks the covenant, and as God said through Jeremiah, the "wife" had broken the covenant:

Both the ten Northern tribes and the tribe of Judah continuously broke the covenant,
but in His mercy God promised a New Covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah which would NOT BE ACCORDING to the covenant He made with them at Sinai:

Jer 31:31-32 "Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, says the LORD."

"Though I was a husband unto them" is the same as saying that though God remained faithful to His vows, the "wife" had continuously been unfaithful, and had therefore broken the covenant - and so their new moons, sabbaths and feasts became utterly distasteful to God, to the point that God even calls Israel "Sodom and Gomorrah":

Isa 1:10-14 "Hear the word of the LORD, all of you rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, all of you people of Gomorrah.

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? says the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

When all of you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them."

UNFIT FOR PURPOSE:

The Covenant God made with Israel "in the day He took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt" had proved unfit for purpose in two ways:

1. It was unfit for purpose in terms of God having an everlasting covenant relationship with His elect; and
2. It was unfit for purpose to bring life and righteousness to God's elect:

Rom 7:12-14: "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin."

The Law and the covenant at Sinai was unfit for purpose not because God was not faithful and capable, but because His elect were neither faithful nor capable.

THE TWO COVENANTS RATIFIED BY BLOOD - THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT

Blood has to do with sacrifice for sins and forgiveness for sins. The first covenant, given at Sinai, was ratified with blood:

Exo 24:8 "And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you concerning all these words."

Likewise the New Covenant was ratified by blood - but not with the blood of bulls and goats - with Christ's blood:

Mat 26:28 "For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."

FOREVER

The New Covenant is everlasting, the old covenant is gone:

Heb 8:13 "In that he says, A new covenant, he has made the first old. Now that which decays and waxes old is ready to vanish away."

COMMANDMENTS IN THE LAW WHICH CONTAINED THE WORDS "EVERLASTING" AND "FOREVER"

.. are done away with and cease to exist - BECAUSE THEY WERE BROKEN BY THE PEOPLE AND THE COVENANT WHICH WAS BASED UPON THEM HAS BEEN REPLACED.

INSULTING THE BLOOD OF THE EVERLASTING COVENANT

It's an insult to God the Father and His Messiah who is Christ the Lord to seek to keep alive commandments (such as sabbath-keeping) which are part of the Old Covenant and have been done away with because the "wife" broke the covenant.

When God used the words "everlasting" and "forever" when He gave the Law and its commandments to His elect at Sinai, it's because HE was faithful and capable of keeping HIS vows - and IF (ONLY IF) the "wife" in that marriage-covenant had remained obedient and faithful, would that covenant INCLUDING ALL ITS COMMANDMENTS UPON WHICH IT WAS BASED, have remained "everlasting" and "forever".

So to the question: "Whatever happened to forever?" - those who belong to Christ know the answer - "forever" and "everlasting" in that covenant's commandments WAS BROKEN BY THE PEOPLE, and so the entire covenant needed replacing.

God would NEVER have first promised the New Covenant and Christ would NOT have come to shed His blood as a remission of sins if that covenant and those commandments were fit for purpose - but they are NOT fit for purpose.

Jesus said:

John 13:34 " A new commandment I give unto you, That all of you love one another; as I have loved you, that all of you also love one another."

He said,

Matt 22:40 "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets:

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

Paul said,

Rom 13:9-10 "For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Love works no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

NOT A LICENSE TO SIN

DEAD TO THE LAW

Rom 7:6 "But now we having been set free from the Law, having died to that in which we were held, so that we serve in newness of spirit and not in oldness of the letter."

THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST HAVE DIED TO THE LAW BECAUSE CHRIST ABOLISHED IT IN HIS FLESH WHEN HE DIED:

Eph 2:15 "Having abolished in His flesh the enmity (the Law of commandments contained in ordinances) so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, making peace between them;"

DEAD TO SIN:

Rom 6:1-4 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know all of you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

So the apostle John could write,

1John 2:1-3 "My little children, I write these things to you so that you do not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He is the propitiation concerning our sins, and not concerning ours only, but also concerning the sins of all the world.

And by this we know that we have known Him, if we keep His commandments."

WHICH COMMANDMENTS?

1. LOVE THE BRETHREN

John 13:34 " A new commandment I give unto you, That all of you love one another; as I have loved you, that all of you also love one another."

2. LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR

Matt 19:17-19 "And He said to him, Why do you call Me good? There is none good but one, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.

He said to Him, Which?

Jesus said, You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and, you shall love your neighbor as yourself."

IT'S JUST AS PAUL LATER SAID,

3. LOVE YOUR ENEMIES (IT'S PART OF LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOR)

Matt 5:43-44 "You have heard that it was said, "You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you, so that you may become sons of your Father in Heaven. For He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."

HOW DO WE KEEP THESE COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST?

Jesus told us how:

John 15:4-6 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.

I am the Vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered. And they gather and cast them into the fire, and they are burned."

AGAIN, IT'S JUST AS PAUL LATER SAID,

Phil 2:13 "For it is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure."

Turning away from grace back to the Law and commandments of Moses will cause you to fall from grace:

John 1:17 "For the law came through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."

JESUS REPRESENTS US BEFORE GOD, AND HE PERFECTLY OBEYED THE LAW OF MOSES AND ITS COMMANDMENTS ON OUR BEHALF - BECAUSE GOD'S ELECT WAS INCAPABLE OF OBEYING THEM, AND BROKE THE COVENANT.

THE LAWS OF MOSES AND THEIR COMMANDMENTS ARE FOREVER UNFIT FOR PURPOSE. CHRIST'S BLOOD AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD ARE FOREVER FIT FOR PURPOSE.
Man will always be obligated to be righteous/obedient. This hasn't changed under the New Covenant. The matter is all about how that is achieved, with God, or without Him, which turns out to be impossible. The New Covenant is all about something new: establishing relationship/communion with God. This is essentially a union that Adam dismissed and rejected, and the union that we're to now come to embrace as we become reconciled with God again.

What a load of nonsese. Please show me a single scripture where ISRAEL asked for the law and it was not God's first choice? There is not one single scripture that you have provided in this long winded post here that says the giving of God's 10 commandments was was not God's choice and the result of ISRAEL asking for it.

Because God never wanted the law, the people did.

So the Most High bent to the will of His subjects by, in all of His wisdom, giving us law He knew we couldn't adhere to? I don't buy that at all - especially given that we know the exact reason why the law was given to Moses (it wasnt because we wanted it). Besides, Christ followed all of the law so clearly His Law isn't too much for humans. Why would He renege on the law He gave?

So you are telling me with a straight face that the Most High gave us the Law because Israel wanted it? When did humans develop the audacity to believe the Most High works for us?

The Law was given to Israel to set them apart as a nation. However, before Moses was given the Law by God (i.e. it is God's law, not Moses') the Law was already written on our hearts. So the idea of us asking for law is absurd considering we already had it on our hearts.

We were given the Law directly because we became ignorant of the Law, fell into bondage and then wanted to stay in bondage. We were so degenerate that the law had to be written down for us on stone, and repeated through prophets.

I do not believe God "works for us" and this is not the argument I am making. But God works WITH us and that is unequivocal.

For example in Exodus 32, here's what God wanted to do:

7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

9 “I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. 10 Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”

Here's what Moses wanted God to do:

11 But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’”

And here's what God did:

14 Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

So the idea of us asking for law is absurd considering we already had it on our hearts.

The Israelite slaves, having grown up in Egypt, perhaps wanted to be like the surrounding nations and have a Kinship Covenant; or maybe it was for the reason that it was the best covenant that didn't involve coming face to face with the Almighty God.

Did Israel become a kingdom of priests and a holy nation? Or did Moses alone become the mediator?

Yes ISRAEL is all those who believe and follow God's Word in the new covenant. As posted earlier you have no scripture do you. Please show me a single scripture where ISRAEL asked for the law and it was not God's first choice? - there is no scripture.

Hebrews 10:8

If God "did not desire" the things He Himself wrote into the Law, why are they there?

Why would the Most High renege on His agreements? Why would the Most High make law "unfit" for man?
If you'd read the post properly you would have seen that it was the people who reneged on their agreements, and so the covenant was broken.

Good op but awfully long. Spotty in a couple of places but overall good.

What do you do with the facts a) nearly everything Jesus taught can be found in the OT, and b) the epistolary repeatably and often appeals to the Law of Moses?
Yes, Jesus often refers to the Law of Moses, because He was under the Law of Moses - but He sums all the law up for us as follows:

Matt 22:40 "On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets:

Mat 22:37-39 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Matt 7:12 "Therefore all things, whatever you desire that men should do to you, do even so to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets."

Matt 11:13 "For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John."

John 5:39-40 "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life. And they are the ones witnessing of Me, and you will not come to Me that you might have life."

The Law had various purposes:

1. The Law reflects the character of God.
2. The Law shows sin up for what it is.
3. The Law shows us up as sinners, making all the world become guilty before God.
4. The Law is a teacher to point us to Christ who came to redeem us from the curse of the law and abolish the law and its commandments in His flesh, after fulfilling the Law perfectly on our behalf, and dying for our transgressions.

The Law fails in that it brings curses and death to all who seek to live by it - not because the Law is not holy (for the law is holy), but because we are unable to obey it.

Therefore Jesus sums all the Law up into ONE commandment to give us the meaning of it (the spirit of the Law rather than the letter), and then He give us this ONE commandment. Then He tells us to abide in Him so that we can bear this fruit - and both Paul and John the apostle sum the law up in the same way Jesus did:

Rom 13:8-10 "Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For: "Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not lust;" and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Love works no ill to its neighbor, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

1 John 3:23-24
"And this is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment. And he who keeps His commandment dwells in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit which He gave to us."

HEBREWS 10 is in reference to the Mosaic "shadow laws" for remission of sins (sin offerings, Priesthood and Sanctuary service and ceremonial laws). Not God's 10 commandments. They were prophetic in nature pointing to JESUS and God's plan of salvation in the new covenant. For example, JESUS representing the sin offering for all mankind and the true Priesthood and God's plan of redemption for mankind in the new covenant and the work of JESUS on our behalf in the Hevenly Sanctuary *see HEBREWS 7:1-28; HEBREWS 8:1-13; HEBREWS 9:1-28 and HEBREWS 10:1-17. Those in the old covenant were saved in exactly the same way as we are today and that is by faith *HEBREWS 11. The only difference is the process. The Sanctuary service and Mosaic laws for remission of sins were all prophetic pointing to JESUS and God's plan of salvation for mankind in the Heavenly Sanctuary of which the earthly was only a copy *HEBREWS 8:5. This was to teach God's people in the old covenant to look foward to the promised Messiah by faith. While we in the new covenant look back to JESUS by faith to which these laws for remission of sins pointed to. All these old laws where prophetic and fulfilled in JESUS and a part of God's plan of salvation for mankind.

Hope this is helpful.
